IA: 100 Attend NOM Rally in Des Moines

Sunday, August 1st, 2010

The National Organization for Marriage brought its controversial summer tour to Des Moines on Sunday, drawing more than 100 people to the Iowa State Capitol to voice support for traditional marriage.

The rally aimed to gain support for a public vote on the issue of whether states should sanction gay and lesbian marriages.

The organization is on a tour of 19 battleground states and has met with some opposition along the way. About 30 people gathered to protest the rally, but mostly stayed out of the spotlight.

MN: 30 Show Up for NOM Rally in Rochester

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

Same-sex marriage opponents rallied in Rochester on Friday, with organizers calling on supporters to back political candidates who support defining marriage as between a man and a woman.

“Get active, and one of the ways you can get active is by getting people registered to vote in your church,” said Chuck Darrell, communication director for the Minnesota Family Council. “We’ve got to protect the governorship.”

Roughly 30 people turned out for the lunchtime rally in the parking lot of New Life Worship Center in Rochester. The event was sponsored by the National Organization for Marriage as part of the “Summer for Marriage, One Man – One Woman Tour.”

MN: NOM Has Best Showing of Tour in Minneapolis – 75 People

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

Supporters of traditional marriage and gay marriage turned out in roughly equal numbers Wednesday to take part in simultaneous rallies on the State Capitol grounds, where the separate gatherings sparked none of the small but loud confrontations seen elsewhere in recent days.

About 150 people gathered on the lawn in front of the Capitol to hear speakers from the National Organization for Marriage (NOM), which is on a national tour organizing rallies in support of measures to define marriage as a union between a man and a woman.

NOM president Brian Brown led supporters chanting “One man, one woman!” and said the tour stop in Minnesota was designed to fight proposed legislation that would legalize gay marriage in Minnesota. He called heterosexual marriage a “human universal” and “the basis of our society,” while other speakers, including clergy members and a radio talk show host, cited the right of children to have both a mother and a father and criticized homosexual acts as lacking in spirituality.

WI: NOM Tour Draws Largest Crowd Yet – 54 People

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

The National Organization for Marriage (NOM) saw its largest crowd yet Tuesday in Madison, Wisconsin, but counter demonstrators continued to outnumber NOM supporters. In its tenth stop, officials behind NOM’s Summer for Marriage Tour 2010 walled off hundreds of demonstrators from their rally. One head count put NOM supporters at about 54 and counter protesters at 466.

This after NOM supporters were outnumbered Monday in Indianapolis, Indiana 3 to 1. Other stops have been equally sparse, some with as few as 20 supporters.

The mood turned somber in Indianapolis when a sign calling for violence against gay men and lesbians was spotted in the crowd.

Is NOM Tour An Excuse to Draw Counter-Protesters, Show How Angry The Gays Are?

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

The National Organization for Marriage (NOM) has embarked on a 23 state Summer For Marriage bus tour, taking its traditional marriage, anti-gay message on the road to spread the word of what a big, bad threat gay marriage is to society. Unfortunately, society seems to be less than enthused given that supporters at these rallies have been, well, fairly thin on the ground, with gay rights advocates outnumbering NOM supporters 3-1 or more. But could this be just what NOM wants? Conspiracy theorists, here’s one for you.

The Summer for Marriage tour has been perceived as going so badly for NOM, in fact, that some have started to suspect that there may be an ulterior motive behind it.

Fred Sainz, the Human Rights Campaign’s (HRC) vice president of communications, alleges in an article on the HRC’s website that NOM is actually using the tour to draw out gay rights protesters, hoping therein to use confrontations that may or may not have occurred at the events so that they can add to their alleged nationwide plan to evade public disclosure laws and keep hidden their political activities.

IN: NOM Rally Attendee Wants to Lynch the Gays

Monday, July 26th, 2010

NOM Rally Sign in IndianaThe National Organization for Marriage’s “One Man, One Woman” bus tour hit Indianapolis today and the LGBT community came out to greet them. Since we’re hospitable Hoosiers, of course, our welcome wagon outnumbered the small dog and pony show put on by NOM and local religious right groups.

Over 250 LGBT and allied folks protested the rally, but only 40 fundies showed up. At least 10 of the anti-marriage equality crowd were NOM staff or local speakers; the rest of the group were older Caucasians and skewed slightly female.

One older attendee held this sign and the Courage Campaign, there to document the entire tour, got an interview with the man. It’s included after the jump with another photo of the guy with the sign.
