Marriage Equality Bans Cost Gay Couples Up to $6K a Year

Monday, December 26th, 2011

Marriage Equality Bans and TaxesSame-sex spouses are paying as much as $6,000 a year in extra taxes because the federal government doesn’t recognize gay marriage, according to an analysis conducted for CNNMoney by tax specialists.

While marriage provides tax benefits for many heterosexual couples, same-sex families don’t enjoy the same perks because they are not allowed to file their federal returns jointly.

The imbalance persists despite increasing acceptance of gay marriage as a legal right. More than 12 states now grant full or partial marriage rights to same-sex couples, and a recent Gallup poll showed — for the first time — that a majority of Americans favor gay marriage.

NY: How Marriage Equality Will Change the Financial Lives of Gay Couples

Saturday, June 25th, 2011

Couples may marry for love, but the partnership is also an economic one. And now that New York has become the sixth state to perform same-sex marriage, couples who tie the knot here will gain a variety of financial benefits and legal rights.

Some of the changes will be significant. While New York had already recognized same-sex marriages performed elsewhere, that recognition didn’t extend to state income taxes. Now, couples who marry and live in New York will be able to file their state tax returns jointly. Wealthier couples may end up paying more in taxes, but families with lower incomes may owe less.

Couples who decide to marry will also be first in line to inherit their spouses’ assets, even in the absence of a will. They’ll gain an array of smaller benefits as well, down to the ability to transfer a lobstering license.

HI: Couples File Suit Against State for Civil Unions

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

Having been together since 2005, Sean Smith and Kale Taylor are like many committed couples – they want to make things official. “It’s what people do,” said Smith, 32. “It’s what all our friends do.”

“The closer we got to civil unions, it’s become a little more important to us to have (a commitment) ceremony and have all our family involved,” Smith said. “We really thought we were close to being able to have a civil union.”

Gov. Linda Lingle’s veto of House Bill 444 ended the possibility. Now Smith and Taylor, 29, are among six couples suing the state, alleging it has failed to provide equal rights to gays and lesbians short of marriage. The lawsuit, being filed today in Circuit Court, asks the court to step in where the Legislature did not and reverse the effect of Lingle’s veto.
