Blue Ridge Rainbow Ceremonies, Washington, DCAs an Ordained Interfaith Minister & Pastoral Counselor, M.A., I’m honored to help you plan and create your unique, personalized wedding/commitment ceremony – YOU’RE THE CO-ARCHITECT!. I welcome the chance to prepare a spiritual ceremony for an unforgettable wedding ceremony.

Reverend Elisheva celebrates and embraces the love and joining for life that is the birth-right of every gay and lesbian couple. She believes that a healthy, long lasting, loving family is the fabric of society, and that the LGBT community is an important and needed part of that whole.

She creates elegant, unique and individualized ceremonies that will create everlasting memories of a couple’s special day. The event is both a ceremony and a source of inspiration that will provide comfort, joy and strength for the rest of a couple’s life together. As a remembrance of your wedding, each couple is provided with a beautiful hard-bound copy of the event.

In order to make your ceremony both personal and unique, both partners are asked to fill out a personal questionnaire, a source for Reverend Elisheva to become acquainted with the couple and their deepest aspirations for the future. From these answers, your wedding day is filled with new and exciting thoughts and revelations.

Gay Friendly Washington DC Wedding Vendors

Joyful Heart Ceremonies, Washington DCOn Friday, April 16, 2010, I had the pleasure and profound honor of officiating my first LEGAL gay wedding in Washington, DC. The lovely couple chose the National Arboretum as their place to be married. It was just the three of us in a natural cathedral of soaring trees. As they spoke words of love and commitment to each other that couples have spoken for thousands of years, it made me wonder why such a simple act of declaring one’s love for another is so threatening to some people.

As I often say in my wedding ceremonies, “Love is a miraculous gift and the miracle of love is that love is given to us to give to others.” It’s that simple. There can never be too much love in this world!

I was ordained ten years ago through the Baltimore Spiritual Science Center, an interfaith school that honors all religious traditions and stresses a policy of inclusiveness. It has been my great joy to officiate almost 200 weddings, civil unions, baptisms and funeral ceremonies in the last ten years. I believe that marriage is a sacred rite that should be open to ALL couples.

I work closely with each couple to ensure that the wedding ceremony they want is exactly what they get. You have the final say on every aspect of the ceremony.

TX: Wedding of Gay Couple Married on Skype Declared Invalid in DC

Monday, November 29th, 2010

Mark Reed-Walkup and Dante Walkup, of Texas, are the first same-sex couple in the U.S. to use Skype to become legally married. But now their marriage has been ruled unacceptable.
The men, who have been together for more than 10 years wanted to get married, but same-sex marriages are not performed or recognized in Texas.

They wanted their wedding to take place in their home town of Dallas, so they did some research and found that they could be married by an officiant in Washington, D.C., via Skype. “We travelled to the District of Columbia in May and went to the marriage bureau and got our licence,” said Reed-Walkup, 51.

DC: Mormon Representative Chaffetz Could Push for Gay Marriage Vote if GOP Takes House

Tuesday, November 2nd, 2010

“They passed the law and were afraid of a vote… The Democrats were scared to death of having a vote, because same-sex marriage has failed 31 times in the states. People vote in favor of traditional marriage, particularly the African American community. Look: I think it’s a shame we didn’t have a vote in the United States Congress. I think it’s embarrassing that we didn’t have a vote in the city. But I don’t know what could be done.”

Jason Chaffetz, the ranking Republican on the Congressional committee that oversees the affairs of the city of Washington, DC. The City Paper quotes Chaffetz here as he reiterates his earlier public statements. It is expected, by most watchers, that Republicans will take over the House of Representatives in nationwide elections later today. It is assumed that Chaffetz will then become the new head of the oversight committee.

Chaffetz, a US Representative from Utah, proposed a bill once already to force DC to hold a public referendum on the civil marriage rights of gay couples. The elected City Council of DC passed a bill in 2009 to legalize the recognition of same-sex unions, and that law went into effect in March 2010.

DC: Supreme Court Considering Taking Gay Marriage Case

Thursday, October 21st, 2010

US Supreme CourtA lawsuit over a referendum on same-sex marriage has reached the U.S. Supreme Court. And it’s not Proposition 8.

The lawsuit is Jackson v. D.C., an appeal that asks whether the District of Columbia charter (the city’s equivalent to a constitution) can bar voters from considering a ballot measure that would amend the charter in a way that would violate the city’s human rights law.

D.C.’s charter prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation, and, earlier this year, the city enacted a marriage equality law that enables same-sex couples to obtain marriage licenses the same as straight couples.

DC’s Real Housewives Talk Gay Marriage

Friday, September 24th, 2010

Before Washington D.C.’s City Council voted to approve same-sex marriage in the nation’s capital, the Real Housewives of D.C. gals gathered, with cameras rolling, at gay D.C. Councilman David Catania’s office for a little chit chat over the issue. Because this is D.C. and the peasants must be informed!

Some of the ladies (Catherine “Cat” Ommanney, Lynda Erkiletian, who has a gay sister) were fully supportive of giving gays the go; others were either oblivious to the importance of full marriage rights (Mary Schmidt Amons) or outright opposed them (Stacie Scott Turner and her husband Jason). “Jason and I understand that people have different lifestyles,” Stacie says, “but it’s way more black and white than that. Marriage is between a man and a woman.” Oh really, Stacie?

Sitting in the room was this season’s main gay Paul Wharton, the hairstylist, who seems to be at the center of or somehow involved with most of the ladies’ drama. He, of course, wants the right o marry — and says that if Stacie and Jason don’t want that for him, maybe he they shouldn’t all be friends.

DC: NOM Sponsored City Council Candidate Loses With Just 20% of the Vote

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

In the District of Columbia, NOM lost big yesterday. The homophobic organization’s candidate for DC City Council in Ward 5, Delano Hunter, got thumped. Incumbent Harry Thomas Jr. defeated Hunter by a 3 to 1 margin. Here is the latest breakdown courtesy of DCist:

Ward 5 Council
Harry Thomas – 62.05%
Delano Hunter – 20.07%
Kenyan McDuffie – 13.77%

As we’ve reported, NOM spent big on this race. And, Hunter secured the endorsement of the Washington Post in an editorial that told us to ignore his homophobia.
