DC: What’s Next for Gay Marriage Law

Monday, July 26th, 2010

In yet another important win for marriage equality, the District of Columbia’s highest court ruled July 15 that the city government acted lawfully when it rejected a local minister attempt to place a referendum before voters that sought to roll back equal marriage rights for gay couples in the nation’s capital.

The ruling leaves intact marriage equality legislation, in effect in the District City Council since early March. But the ruling may not be the end of the battle for Washington, D.C. The U.S. Supreme Court and Congress may have the final word.

There were two questions before the D.C. Court of Appeals, which is the equivalent of a state supreme court. First, whether the proposed ballot measure was discriminatory or not, and second, whether the D.C. City Council had the authority to restrict a ballot initiative that violated a provision of city’s Human Rights Act, which bans discrimination based on the basis of sexual orientation and other categories.

Life is good at home in Columbia with the Collins-McCarthy family. They have an 18-month-old son named Keegan. On Saturday, Kelly Collins and Tricia McCarthy will be married on a boat on the Potomac River.

The courts in D.C. processed only 3,096 applications for marriage licenses all last year. Since the first legal same-sex weddings in the District back on March 9, 2,094 couples have applied to get married in the nation’s capitol.

DC: Playwright Terrence McNally Marries Long-time Partner

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010

Married: Terrence McNally and Tom Kirdahy Tuesday in Washington. The Tony-winning playwright, 71, and lawyer, 46, tied the knot on the banks of the Potomac near the Kennedy Center, which is running a series of McNally’s plays.

The couple had a civil union in Vermont seven years ago, but wanted a marriage: Rev. George Walker of the People’s Congregational United Church of Christ performed the ceremony – Kirdahy read a scene from McNally’s play “Corpus Christi” – and actress Tyne Daly served as a witness. DC: Gay Marriage Opponents Create New PAC to Target Supporters

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010

Opponents of D.C.’s gay marriage law say they haven’t given up their fight. They’re still fighting in court to have a referendum on the definition of marriage, and they hope to unseat lawmakers who voted for the bill.

“I believe all of them will pay political consequences for their actions,” said Bob King, who has teamed up with Bishop Harry Jackson and the National Organization for Marriage to form a political action committee. It will support D.C. candidates who oppose same-sex marriage, including, for example, mayoral candidate Leo Alexander.

“I think it was arrogant on the mayor’s part and the council, just 14 individuals deciding how 600,000 should live,” Alexander said. The PAC has set its sights on Mayor Adrian Fenty, who signed the law, and Council Chairman Vincent Gray, who is running against Fenty in the Democratic mayoral primary.

DC: NOM Robocalling DC Residents With Anti Gay Marriage “Survey”

Sunday, March 14th, 2010

“The National Organization for Marriage is sponsoring robo-calling of DC residents asking if they think marriage should be between only one man and one woman. Since marriage equality is now a fact in the city the reasons for this survey might not be apparent.’”

Taken from the GLAA Forum of Washington, DC at 4:31pm today, regarding a recorded telephone “survey” from the National Organization for Marriage, a group that opposes marriage for gay men and lesbians. (GLAA Forum)

NOM is a socially conservative political organization headed by Brian Brown and Maggie Gallagher. They have been a fundamental part of efforts to repeal marriage in California and Maine. The group has also helped to block votes for marriage in other areas of the the United States, and according to its website is working against recognition of legal same-sex marriage in Maryland and New Hampshire. The calls were received by District residents throughout the day today and into the evening. The return phone number being used is (208) 991-1227, and a quick internet search of that number turns up complaints about automated telephone calls for other “right-wing” causes like the “Tea Party” movement.
