DADT Vote Postponed While Reid and Collins Haggle

Thursday, December 9th, 2010

Senator Susan CollinsSenate Majority Leader Harry Reid on Wednesday postponed a vote on repeal of the military’s ban on open gay service.

On the Senate floor, Reid announced plans to move forward on repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” which is tucked inside the Defense Authorization Act: “I’m likely going to move to my motion to reconsider on the Defense Authorization Act this evening. Allowing, as I will indicate at the time, time for amendments to that piece of legislation.”

Reid’s plan met with stiff resistance from Republicans, including repeal proponent Maine Senator Susan Collins, who threatened to vote against repeal of the law that bans gay and bisexual troops to serve openly.

DADT Repeal Update: 12 Democrats Push Reid to Allow Debate Time for Bill

Sunday, November 21st, 2010

Don't Ask Don't TellSenate Democrats on Thursday pressured Majority Leader Harry Reid to strike a deal with Republicans to aid passage of a bill that would let gays serve openly in the military. A dozen Democrats and Sen. Joe Lieberman, an independent from Connecticut, said Reid should allow an extended debate on a wide–ranging defense policy bill, which includes a provision that would repeal the 1993 law known as “don’t ask, don’t tell.”

Lieberman said the Senate’s desire to adjourn before the holidays was no reason to curtail debate and give Republicans an excuse to block the bill.

“If that’s all that separates our military from getting all that they deserve in the defense authorization bill, including the repeal of ‘don’t ask, don’t tell,’ shame on us,” he said. “I’m confident we can and will” pass the legislation.

Australia: Parliament Begins Gay Marriage Debate

Monday, November 15th, 2010

Australia Gay MarriageTo be sure, this is just one step on a long road, but Monday 15 November will at least be remembered as the day the Australian Commonwealth Parliament decided to grow up about gay marriage.

Melbourne’s Green MP Adam Bandt introduced a motion today calling on all parliamentarians to gauge their constituents’ views on the marriage equality issue (ahead of introducing a draft law on the bill).

It is a small step because only a small minority of MPs said anything brave, interesting or new… but it is lot better than the minor Greens or Democrat parties simply talking to a brick wall.

Australia: Parliament to Debate Marriage Equality Legislation Next Week

Friday, November 12th, 2010

Australia Gay MarriageFEDERAL Labor member for Melbourne Ports Michael Danby has called for any same-sex marriage legislation to provide protection for religious ministers so they are not forced to perform those marriages.

As parliament prepares to debate a Greens motion on same-sex marriage next week, Mr Danby said he agreed with Labor Right powerbroker Mark Arbib that change was coming.

“When and if such legislation is passed, it must be tightly framed to exclude established religions being forced to perform such unions,” he said in a statement to The Age. ‘”Gender-pluralism does not mean forcing Archbishop [Denis] Hart to perform a gay marriage at St Pat’s.”

NY: Paladino Furious Over Gay Marriage Debate Question

Tuesday, October 19th, 2010

New York Gay MarriageAs last night’s gubernatorial debate was concluding one of the moderators decided to throw in one last question for the seven candidates — a controversial one that drew outrage from Republican gubernatorial candidate Carl Paladino’s campaign.

The question, “Do you support gay marriage?” was asked at 8:18 p.m. and due to time constraints the moderator stated that they wanted merely a “yes” or “no”"answer, imposing a five second limit on answers from the candidates, as opposed to the 60 – 90 seconds they each got on every other question.

Paladino, who was up first on that question began to explain his views on the issue, only to be interrupted and have a one word answer demanded of him. The flustered candidate, who has been under fire from gay rights activists over remarks made last weekend, responded that he opposed same sex marriages. Five of the other candidates, including Democratic Attorney General Andrew M. Cuomo answered yes; Freedom Party candidate Charles Barron said that his Party was yet to take a position on the issue.

CA: Fiorina Calls Anti-Marriage Equality Position “Consistent With Our President”

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

The Republican candidate for U.S. Senate in California on Wednesday invoked President Obama’s opposition to same-sex marriage while explaining her position against marriage rights for gay couples.

Carly Fiorina, who’s seeking to unseat U.S. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.), said during a debate she believes marriage is between one man and one woman and expressed support for civil unions.

“And actually, the position I’ve consistently espoused is consistent with that of our president and a vast majority of senators in the U.S. Senate,” she said.

Ireland: Senate Approves Civil Partnerships Bill, To Begin January 1st?

Friday, July 9th, 2010

As expected, yesterday Ireland’s Seanad rubber-stamped the nation’s lower chamber and approved its civil unions bill 48-4.

The Green Party Minister for State Ciarán Cuffe, who instigated the move to introduce the legislation in 2007, welcomed its approval last night. He said changes will need to be made in social welfare and tax laws to facilitate the change. He said those changes would most likely be made in December’s Budget.

“I would be happy if it was in place from January 1 next year. Without giving too many hostages to fortune, I am optimistic that the first civil registrations can take place from then,” he said.

Ireland: Senate Debating Civil Partnerships Bill

Thursday, July 8th, 2010

The debate on the legislation, which gives rights to co-habitants, has resumed in the Seanad. The House sat until just after 1am dealing with the bill. Today, dozens of proposed amendments to the Civil Partnership and Certain Rights and Obligations of Cohabitants Bill are due to be discussed.

The debate is due to adjourn at 5.30pm and it is increasingly likely that the bill will have to return to the Seanad either tomorrow or next week to complete its passage into law.

The success of the Government bill is not in doubt as the measures have the support of Opposition parties. However a number of senators have been pressing their amendments to votes. Yesterday, three Fianna Fáil senators resigned the party whip.

Argentina: Senate Discusses Gay Marriage

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

The Upper House General Legislation Committee, led by Liliana Negre de Alonso, held a meeting to discuss the same-sex marriage controversy. Lawyers, professors, judges and adoption leaders debated the matter. The discussion was divided into two parts.

The part of the debate held in the afternoon brought about several remarks in favour of same sex marriage. Different youth groups in favour of gay rights made their statements through a public letter, underlining their support of gay marriage.

Among the arguments, the letter reminded the Senate of article 16 of the Constitution, which holds all citizens “equal under the law.”

Argentina: Gay Marriage Debate Begins in Senate Committee

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010

Today, at 17, the discussion about gay marriage started in the Hall Illia of the Senate, chaired by L. Negre de Alonso. The session will host the Argentinean Federation of Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals and Trans, and the Homosexual Community of Argentina.

The block president of the Frente Para la Victoria, Miguel Angel Pichetto said “You begin to see there is a predisposition,” adding that there is “a significant number of senators who would support the ‘Yes’” to amend Civil Code.

When asked about his posture, the Kirchnerist said, “I am in favor of addressing this issue, of it being adopted and of ratifying the initial approval of the deputies” and said that there is a great chance that the General Law Committee will express its support for the measure.
