Freedom to Marry Launches Campaign to Add Marriage Equality to the Democratic Platform

Monday, February 13th, 2012

Marriage Equality and the Democratic Party PlatformSupporters of gay marriage are calling on the Democratic National Committee (DNC) to add marriage equality to the party’s 2012 platform.

On Monday, Freedom to Marry launched the Democrats: Say I Do campaign.

“An overwhelming majority of Democrats support the freedom to marry, as do a significant majority of Independents and voters under 50 across the political spectrum,” said Evan Wolfson, founder and president of Freedom to Marry. “The Democratic Party has a noble history of fighting for the human and civil rights of all Americans. It’s now time for the national party to be true to its values and its voters and go unequivocally on the record for the freedom to marry.”

New DNC Faith Outreach Director Now Says He Never Signed Marriage Equality Pledge

Saturday, November 5th, 2011

We reported recently that the DNC’s new faith outreach director, Rev. Derrick Harkins, had signed a pledge in favor of same-sex marriage in 2009, only to state his adamant opposition to marriage equality earlier this year (when asked by Sarah Posner if he favored same-sex marriage, he responded “no no no.”)

It seems that rather than get back to those of us reporting on this, and back to the gay community itself, and explain what’s going on, the DNC decided to clarify things to Billy Graham’s magazine. (That should tell you something.) They explained to Billy Graham’s magazine that Harkins’s name on the pro- marriage equality statement was a mistake, he supposedly never put his name on it.

DNC’s New Anti Marriage Equality Faith Director Signed Pro Marriage Equality Pledge in 2009

Saturday, October 29th, 2011

Well, someone at the DNC didn’t do their due diligence. The new Democratic party faith outreach director, Dr. Derrick Harkins of Nineteenth Street Baptist Church in Washington, DC, recently told an interviewer “no no no” when asked about his views on gay marriage. Some folks were pretty upset that the Democrats would hire someone who doesn’t support our full and equal status as human beings.

But then a funny thing happened. A pro- marriage equality pledge surfaced from two years ago in which the same Dr. Derrick Harkins averred his full throated support for gay marriage.

Will DNC Help Defeat Marriage Equality Bans in Minnesota, North Carolina?

Wednesday, October 5th, 2011

The chair of the Democratic National Committee said Tuesday she would “certainly consider” spending money to combat anti-gay constitutional amendments next year in Minnesota and North Carolina.

DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz made the remarks about spending DNC funds to defeat marriage amendments in response to a question from the Washington Blade. She took questions from reporters following an Immigration Equality event she attended in D.C.

Wasserman Schultz, also U.S. House member representing a district in Florida, said state party groups are now focusing on defeating amendments banning same-sex marriage and the national Democratic Party would consider sending resources if asked to do so.

Why Did the DNC Drop DOMA Repeal From Their Website?

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

The DNC has a new Web site up. Included is a page devoted to “civil rights.” Here are the gay civil rights promises the party is now making us:

- Enacting the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, which includes measures prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity;

- Ensuring full civil unions and federal rights for LGBT couples;

- Repealing “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” in a sensible way that strengthens our armed forces and our national security

First off, what happened to repealing DOMA? I do believe our fierce advocate mentioned it repeatedly during the campaign. Why is it gone now? Are there no gay people advising the DNC, or did they just throw out one of the President’s top three promises to our community?
