CA, USA: Fred Karger Lodges Ethics Complaint Against NOM Over Romney Contribution

Monday, April 16th, 2012

NOM LogoLast week, Fred Karger, a Republican Party Presidential candidate, filed a formal complaint with the California’s Fair Political Practices Commission (FPPC) against the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) for failing to report a $10,000 contribution which was made to it on October 14, 2008 by then Governor Mitt Romney.

Fred Karger issued the following statement:-

“NOM has once again conspired to hide its contributions, and this time it was Mitt Romney’s,” stated Karger. “The recently unsealed documents (coincidentally from my last campaign ethics violation complaint against NOM in Maine) revealed that NOM received the $10,000 on October 14, 2008 from Romney’s Alabama PAC “Free and Strong America.”

That was only 3 weeks before the Prop 8 election in which NOM was heavily involved. Funny that NOM appears to have reported all the contributions that it received before and after Romney’s, but failed to report Governor Romney’s $10,000 to ban gay marriage in California.

NC: Facebook Co-Founder Donates $10,000 to Fight Anti Marriage Equality Amendment

Saturday, September 10th, 2011

North Carolina Gay Marriage BanChris Hughes, a co-founder of Facebook, has donated $10,000 to fight a proposed constitutional amendment that would ban gay marriage in North Carolina.

Hughes, who is gay and a native of North Carolina, on Friday pledged to donate $10 to Equality North Carolina, the state’s largest gay rights group, for each “like” the group received on its Facebook page, up to $10,000. The group hit the goal within hours of the announcement.

In January, Hughes, 28, announced that he and Sean Eldridge were engaged to marry. Eldridge, 25, is the President of the Telos Foundation and a senior adviser at Freedom to Marry, a nationwide group dedicated to the legalization of gay marriage. The couple was featured on the May cover of gay glossy The Advocate.

MD: Equality MD Rejects 500K Donation That Would Have Taken Control From Board

Wednesday, June 8th, 2011

Equality Maryland’s board of directors turned down an offer by an anonymous donor to give the financially struggling group $500,000 in exchange for the board giving up its voting privilege and becoming an advisory body, with a new board to be selected by the donor.

Darrell Carrington, an Equality Maryland board member who knows the identity of the donor and acted as the donor’s representative, said he resigned from the board on Monday following the board’s decision to turn down the offer.

He said he recused himself from voting on the offer, among other things, because the donor wanted him to be part of a new board selected by the donor to help save the organization, which faces the prospect of having to lay off all of but one of its employees by July 1.

7 Year Old Donates Money for Marriage Equality

Wednesday, February 9th, 2011

In an effort to teach a 7-year-old boy named Malcolm the importance of improving the world around him, he was given $140 to donate to the charity of his choice.

After hearing a story on the radio about the mistreatment of gays and lesbians, he selected two charities — the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center and the Human Rights Campaign Foundation.

In a letter to the center, Malcolm wrote, “I am sending you this money because I don’t think it’s fair that Gay people are not treated equally.”

Why Did Bloomberg help Fund GOP Takeover of NY Senate?

Tuesday, December 14th, 2010

Mayor Michael BloombergLast week two hotly contested seats in the New York Senate were won by Republicans, giving the GOP a slight edge in the chamber and effectively dousing any hope of marriage equality for years to come. Yesterday the NY Daily News revealed that NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg donated almost $1M to help make that happen. Which is strange because he actually campaigned for one of the Democrats who lost.

Bloomberg secretly gave $900,000 to a barely regulated “housekeeping” account for the Senate Republican campaign, two sources confirm. The account doesn’t have to report its finances for another month, but the sources confirm Bloomberg pumped that cash in – an initial donation of $650,000, then $250,000 more to help push the GOP over the edge.

“That’s what’s so weird,” said one of Bloomberg’s Albany allies. “He’s campaigning for Johnson, but then provided some late help for us.”

MN: Anti Gay, Target Supported Candidate for Governor to Concede

Wednesday, December 8th, 2010

Target-supported GOP candidate Tom Emmer is expected to concede the Minnesota governor’s race to Democrat Mark Dayton this morning.

The Hill reports:

“The Minnesota governor’s race will conclude Wednesday morning with the concession of Republican Tom Emmer, according to reports. On Tuesday, Emmer’s campaign withdrew almost all its remaining ballot challenges, paving the way for Democrat Mark Dayton to declare victory.

Dayton, a former senator, currently leads Emmer by about 9,000 votes out of 2.1 million cast. A recount had been under way since the Nov. 2 election but didn’t erode the Democrat’s lead.”

Boycotts Fail to Make a Dent in Target’s Bottom Line

Thursday, October 7th, 2010

Nearly three months after funneling $150,000 to a candidate who opposes gay marriage, Target Corp. is still dealing with the backlash from liberal groups who oppose the move. But while discussing the economy and other factors attributing to a fairly good year, the company told Ad Age last week that the negative attention hasn’t actually hurt the bottom line.

First, some quick background: The Minneapolis-based retail giant made the July 6 donation to a pro-business group called MN Forward that is backing GOP gubernatorial candidate Tom Emmer. The contribution was allowed under the Supreme Court’s landmark Citizens United ruling and related regulatory decisions that allow companies to give unlimited amounts from their corporate accounts to political causes.

Target faced an outcry from groups that saw the donation as a betrayal to the company’s gay-friendly reputation. But in an interview with Ad Age’s Natalie Zmuda, Target Exec VP-Chief Marketing Officer Michael R. Francis said the protests and boycotts appear to have had a “negligible impact,” given sales for July and August were in line with expectations. Still, the retailer is taking the situation seriously.

MN: Another Company Gives to Anti Gay Candidate’s PAC

Tuesday, September 28th, 2010

3M – the enormous technology, health care, security, and manufacturing company that seems to be behind anything with double-sided sticky surfaces – has a market cap of $62 billion. Now it’s joining Target and Best Buy in funneling some of that cash toward MN Forward, the Minnesota business PAC that wants to elect Tom Emmer governor of the state, despite his opposition to basic things like marriage equality and anti-bullying measures.

That’s great news for Target, because for so many weeks the big box retailer was facing the brunt of the heat! And while a number of corporations have trafficked cash into MN Forward, at an emotional level it’s easier for us to find frustration with brands we regularly interact with.

Which is why you won’t care too much about Polaris Industries, Hubbard Broadcasting, or Davisco Food International, which all donated $100,000 in cash to the PAC. But Target and Best Buy? They make your blood boil, because you might want to buy a plasma TV from one of ‘em soon.

Mother of Gay Son Posts You Tube Video of Target Boycott

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

Last week, the Target Corporation gave $150,000 to Minnesota Forward, an anti-gay group supporting Republican Tom Emmer’s campaign for Minnesota governor.

According to a CBS News report, “Emmer is a fiery conservative who opposes gay marriage, lauds Arizona’s strict approach to illegal immigration, once advocated chemical castration for sex offenders and wants to lower taxes.”

Enter Randi Reitan, who has a gay son and whose repeated attempts to reach Target executives failed. So what did she do? She took her anger directly to her local Target and had a friend film the encounter.
