Gay Soldiers Cheer DADT Ruling

Sunday, December 19th, 2010

Don't Ask Don't Tell RepealTHE gay army lieutenant’s heart had been racing all night. Shuffling between meetings at his outpost in eastern Afghanistan, the 27-year-old officer kept popping his head into the main office to catch a glimpse of Fox News’s coverage of the US Senate debate that led to a vote lifting the ban on gay men and lesbians serving in the military openly.

“Don’t cry,” a 21-year-old specialist, one of the lieutenant’s confidants, told his boss jokingly when news broke that 65 senators had voted to repeal “don’t ask, don’t tell”.

“I’m completely numb,” was all the lieutenant could mutter.

Across the world, many gay troops had seethed for weeks as the political debate over the repeal became laden with sexual innuendo and suggestions that openly gay soldiers on the front lines might become life-threatening distractions.

Right-Wing Reaction to DADT Repeal

Sunday, December 19th, 2010

Don't Ask Don't Tell RepealAfter yesterday’s vote to repeal Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell in the Senate, some of America’s most conservative voters were in a predictable melt down. Over at Free Republic, a conservative website popular with Tea Party activists, the mood was souring and the mask was slipping:

“The issue of homosexuals in the military is part of the Marxist plan to destroy our society and our free nation. It will destroy our military, our defenses, our national security and eventually cost us our freedom!” Meet your new homosexual overlords, I guess. I wonder what the mandatory reeducation camps will look like? I bet they’re really fabulous.

We can laugh – and we really should laugh – but the thing is, these people are serious. They really do fear that granting gay people equal rights (or any rights at all) will mean a reduction of their own. Fear is at the root of their concerns. Fear for the nation, for the cultural fabric and fear of the future.

DADT Repeal Will Take Time, Officials Say

Saturday, December 18th, 2010

Don't Ask Don't Tell RepealTop US officials hailed a Senate vote Saturday that will for the first time allow gay men and lesbians to serve openly in the military but said it would take time to implement the bill.

President Barack Obama lauded as an “historic step” the Senate’s repeal of the “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” policy – which forced gay troops to keep their sexual orientation secret – and was expected to sign it into law next week.

But it will only take effect once Obama, Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Admiral Mike Mullen – all of whom supported the bill – certify that the new regulations will not undermine the military.

One Democrat Skips DADT Repeal Vote

Saturday, December 18th, 2010

Don't Ask Don't Tell RepealToday the Senate voted 65-31 to repeal the odious “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy. Obama is expected to sign it into law next week. Our nation has spent decades wasting time and valuable resources kicking out qualified soldiers. More than 13,000 of them were removed because Clinton-era politicians went into vapor lock at the idea of gay men sharing space with straight ones.

I’d started to wonder if the Democrats could pull it off or if the Republicans would manage to run out the clock and filibuster it the way they’ve done every other proposal from the left side of the aisle. As much as I’ve complained about Obama’s record (while always acknowledging he’s light years better than The Crypt Keeper and Mooseburger Barbie would’ve been), it looks like he managed to win one for the good guys.

No thanks to Joe Manchin, of course. The former governor was the only Democrat to vote against an earlier DADT repeal effort because of “timing.” For today’s vote, he didn’t even bother to show up.

President Hails DADT Repeal

Saturday, December 18th, 2010

Don't Ask Don't Tell RepealPresident Barack Obama hailed the Senate’s vote today to repeal the law that banned gays and lesbians from serving openly in the military and expressed confidence the Defense Department can institute the new policy while maintaining military strength and readiness.

The Senate, during a rare Saturday session, voted 65 to 31 to overturn the so-called “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy that’s been in effect since 1993.

“The Senate has taken an historic step toward ending a policy that undermines our national security while violating the very ideals that our brave men and women in uniform risk their lives to defend,” Obama said in a statement issued after the Senate voted earlier today to break a filibuster and move forward to a vote on the bill.

Senate Gives Final Passage to Don’t Ask Don’t Tell Repeal; Bill Goes to Obama

Saturday, December 18th, 2010

Don't Ask Don't Tell RepealThis afternoon, after the earlier 63-33 vote to invoke cloture on the stand-alone Don’t Ask Don’t Tell repeal bill, the Senate voted 65-31 to finalize the repeal bill and send it to President Obama’s desk.

According to Towleroad.com, while the end of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell will then be in sight, there are still a couple hurdles:

“But even after President Obama signs repeal into law, DADT will still be with us. As you recall, the repeal bill makes an end to DADT contingent upon certification from Secrertary Gates and others before the policy will actually die away. This is to allow the military sufficient time for implementation.”

Coincidentally, we were just watching the end of season three of Queer as Folk, and something Deb said sent shivers up our spines:

“Mourn the losses, for they are many.  But celebrate the wins, because they are few.”

Today is a day for celebration.

DADT Stand-Alone Bill Faces Senate Cloture Vote Today

Saturday, December 18th, 2010

Don't Ask Don't Tell RepealThe bid to repeal “don’t ask, don’t tell” is heading for a crucial showdown in the Senate, where supporters say they have the votes to overturn a ban on gay people serving openly in the U.S. military.

Sen. Joe Lieberman, I-Conn., said Saturday that the Senate action does not “just right a wrong” but it would “honor the service of a group of American patriots who happen to be gay and lesbian.”

Lieberman has said he has more than enough votes to get past a procedural roadblock and move ahead with passing repeal. The restrictions on the military service of gay people have been part of federal law since 1993.

Will Senate Have Time for DADT Repeal?

Thursday, December 16th, 2010

Harry ReidIf Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell is going to be repealed by Congress this year, it will be because the Senate found the time to do it. That’s what the long battle to end the military’s ban on openly gay servicemembers has come down to: a Republican Senator, and the number of days before Christmas.

Unfortunately for proponents of repeal, how those two factors play out is very much an open question.

Yesterday, the House passed a standalone DADT repeal bill — the second repeal legislation to leave the House this year. The bill means that the House is well and truly done with DADT repeal. A bipartisan coalition of 275 House members weighed in and voted yes on repeal yesterday, sending the action to the Senate once and for all.

DADT: Senator Snowe Will Support DADT Repeal

Wednesday, December 15th, 2010

Don't Ask Don't Tell RepealU.S. Sen. Olympia has said she will vote in support of repealing the armed forces’ “Don’t Ask, Dont Tell” policy.

Under the 17-year-old law, a gay or lesbian people may serve in the U.S. military as long as they do not disclose their sexual orientation.

“The legislation under consideration does not direct immediate repeal, but rather requires the Secretary of Defense and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, in consultation with the service chiefs, to develop a detailed plan prior to executing repeal of the policy,” Snowe said.

House Passes Stand-Alone Don’t Ask Don’t Tell Repeal

Wednesday, December 15th, 2010

Don't Ask Don't Tell RepealThe House of Representatives voted Wednesday to overturn the ban on openly gay and lesbian soldiers serving in the U.S. military, passing legislation repealing the controversial “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy.

The bill — a so-called “standalone” measure not tied to any other legislative items — passed 250 to 175 in a virtual party-line vote. It now advances to the Senate.

The House previously passed a repeal of the ban as part of a larger defense spending authorization bill, but the measure stalled last week in the Senate.

“Now is the time for us to act,” said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-California. “We should honor the service of all who want to contribute” to America’s security. “Repealing ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ makes for good public policy.”
