CA: Prop 8 Repeal Proposal This Year Lost at Equality CA By One Vote

Friday, March 2nd, 2012

Prop 8 RepealA proposal to try to repeal Proposition 8 in 2012 failed an Equality California board vote by one vote, officials from Love Honor Cherish claim in a recent letter to EQCA.

The Los Angeles-based LHC, which recently dropped its bid to repeal Prop 8 in 2012, began circulating the letter this week.

A Field Poll released Wednesday, February 29 shows that 59 percent of registered California voters support same-sex marriage, the highest level ever recorded during 35 years of polling on the issue in the state.

CA: Gay Rights Groups Split on Prop 8 Repeal Effort in 2012

Wednesday, November 16th, 2011

Prop 8 RepealEquality California said Aug. 12 that it does not support returning to the ballot to try to repeal Proposition 8 until 2012.

Other groups are preparing for a 2012 ballot fight. They include the Courage Campaign, Love Honor Cherish, Los Angeles’ Stonewall Democratic Club and at least 40 other organizations.

“Donors want to make sure their investments to win back marriage are wisely invested,” EQCA Marriage Director Marc Solomon said in an Aug. 12 conference call with reporters. “Monolithically, they are not supportive of returning to the ballot (in 2010).”

CA: Equality California Rules Out 2012 Prop 8 Repeal Initiative

Wednesday, October 5th, 2011

Prop 8 RepealCalifornia’s largest gay rights group has decided against trying to repeal the state’s voter-approved ban on same-sex unions next year.

Equality California announced Wednesday that it would not lead a campaign in 2012 to undo Proposition 8, the constitutional amendment that limited marriage to a man and a woman five months after the state Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriages.

Executive Director Roland Palencia says that with polls showing voters still divided and a court challenge that could overturn the measure pending, the time is not right to undertake a risky and expensive ballot fight.

CA: Equality California to Decide on 2012 Prop 8 Repeal Measure By September 30th

Thursday, September 22nd, 2011

Prop 8 RepealGay rights advocates still haven’t made a decision about whether to take gay marriage back to California voters.

After 2008′s Proposition 8 outlawed same-sex marriage in California, there was immediate talk of returning the issue to the ballot to reverse it in 2010. However, gay community leaders ultimately decided to wait until 2012, to watch how a legal battle over the proposition would proceed, and give them more time to garner resources and support.

But as time has passed, there still is no consensus about whether going back to the ballot is the right choice. Now, the group that led the 2008 battle against Prop. 8 says it will make a decision by the end of September.

Equality California Asks: Should We Put Prop 8 on 2012 Ballot?

Tuesday, April 5th, 2011

Prop 8Equality California launched a campaign yesterday to gauge community support for heading back to the ballot in 2012 to try to undo Proposition 8. Approved by voters in November 2008, Prop 8 amended the state constitution to re-ban same-sex marriage, which had been legal for 4 and a half months.

EQCA said the ongoing federal lawsuit against Prop 8 “could take years to resolve” and so it wants to know what the “community” wants to do. In a case brought by the American Foundation for Equal Rights, represented by famous attorneys Ted Olson and David Boies, a federal district court struck down Prop 8 last summer and issued an injunction barring its further enforcement.

However, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals suspended the injunction, and the people who had put Prop 8 on the ballot appealed District Judge Vaughn Walker’s decision.

EQCA Documents Show Big Drop in Contributions

Wednesday, November 17th, 2010

EQCA Logo

The statewide LGBT advocacy group Equality California plans to con

tinue promoting marriage equality and pro-gay candidates, despite shutting down some offices in a cost-cutting move.

This week, the San Francisco-based group released tax documents showing an unsurprising, but drastic drop in contributions after the unsuccessful 2008 campaign against the Prop 8 same-sex marriage ban.

Contributions and grants to EQCA were down from about $14 million in 2008 to approximately $6 million in 2009, according to the group’s 990 forms prepared for the IRS. The 2008 990s had previously been available.

CA: Noose Left at Santa Ana Equality California Office

Friday, October 29th, 2010

Noose at EQCA Santa Ana OfficesA black noose was hung this week from the door of a gay-rights organization here, and the worker who found it now plans to file a formal complaint about how police responded.

Mel Distel found the cloth noose on Thursday evening on the door to Equality California’s office in south Santa Ana. She called police and says one of the officers who responded dismissed the noose as a string on the door and told her: Sometimes, you just have to live with being a victim.

Santa Ana Police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna declined to comment on Distel’s account. But he said the department is treating the case as a possible terrorist threat to real property, a misdemeanor. It’s been assigned to investigators who handle crimes against persons. The noose “was shocking,” Distel said Friday. “It struck me as something that could escalate, something that was definitely meant to be hurtful.”
