Caroline Kennedy Calls on Dem Party for Freedom to Marry Platform

Tuesday, May 8th, 2012

At a ceremony on Monday, Caroline Kennedy will present the 2012 John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award to three former Iowa supreme court justices voted out of their positions after they ruled in favor of same-sex marriage in 2009.

The daughter of former president John Kennedy, is urging Democrats to embrace marriage equality. Kennedy joined “Democrats: Say I Do,” a campaign from the group Freedom to Marry that advocates a marriage equality plank in this year’s Democratic party platform.

“There are few things in life more important than being able to marry and build a family with the person you love,” Kennedy said in a statement. “This fundamental right should be available to all Americans, including gay and lesbian couples. In our democracy we are fortunate to have elected officials at all levels of government, and courageous jurists who have put their careers on the line, to uphold the promise of equality that is as old as our Constitution, and I hope that many more will follow their example.”

WA: Freedom to Marry Head Says Marriage Equality Repeal Likely to Make Ballot

Friday, April 20th, 2012

Marriage Equality Repeal EffortOpponents of same-sex marriage will collect enough signatures to force a statewide vote and Washington is due for a nasty, costly Referendum 74 campaign in the fall, supporters heard at a Thursday night banquet.

“There will be a ballot measure vote in November,” Evan Wolfson, founder and president of the national group Freedom to Marry told QLaw, the GLBT Bar Association of Washington.

Wolfson said the issue is likely to be on the ballot, in one form or another, in five states — Washington, Maryland, Maine, Minnesota and North Carolina. In the latter two states, opponents are trying to enshrine in state constitutions a definition of marriage as between a man and a woman.

USA: Courage Campaign Calls Freedom to Marry’s “Win More States” Initiative “Misplaced”

Sunday, April 8th, 2012

Courage CampaignThe Courage Campaign, the California-based LGBT online organizing network which has been a force in the battle against Prop 8 and other initiatives, jumped into the controversy surrounding Freedom to Marry, the group leading the fight nationally for marriage equality, calling the focus of Freedom to Marry’s latest effort “misplaced.”

Freedom to Marry came under intense criticism from some activists in recent weeks after the group announced its Win More States Fund, an effort to raise $3 million for fights in Maine, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, and Washington. Activists charged that missing from the list of states was Maryland, where a bill granting marriage equality and signed by the governor will be challenged in a ballot measure in November, and North Carolina, where an amendment is on the ballot next month to ban gay marriage and civil unions in the state constitution.

Evan Wolfson, president of Freedom to Marry, defended the group’s actions, appearing on my radio program on SiriusXM OutQ two weeks ago: “This was not about abandoning [Maryland and North Carolina].And it was not about saying what people were doing on the ground [in those states] was not important. We have never said they’re not winnable or the money is not well spent. What we are saying is here are five battleground opportunities where we are putting our fight. Others are taking the lead in other places. We alone can’t do everything.”

USA: Freedom to Marry Asks GOP Presidential Candidates to Renounce Anti Marriage Equality Pledge

Thursday, March 29th, 2012

Freedom to MarryFollowing the release of internal strategy memos of the so-called National Organization for Marriage (NOM), which call for the use of race as a means of impeding the freedom to marry for same-sex couples, Freedom to Marry joined AMERICAblog’s call on GOP candidates, all of whom took a NOM pledge to push for a Federal Marriage Amendment, nominate anti-marriage judges to the Supreme Court and appoint an anti-marriage Attorney General, among other anti-freedom to marry actions to renounce their pledge.

“Now that NOM’s race-baiting strategy of pitting American against American, minority against minority, and family members against family members is out in the open, we call on GOP candidates to renounce their NOM pledges,” said Evan Wolfson, founder and president of Freedom to Marry, the campaign to win marriage nationwide.

“A president’s job is to lead and unite the nation, not take part in a politics of division and cruelty. Anyone seeking the nation’s highest office should not be affiliated with a group seeking to discredit the strong and clear voice of those African-American civil rights champions, such as John Lewis, Julian Bond, and Coretta Scott King, who have stood up for the freedom to marry and the equal civil rights of all people, including gay people of color.”

MD, USA: Freedom to Marry Abandoning Maryland?

Thursday, March 29th, 2012

Maryland Marriage Equality and Freedom to MarryThe excitement that followed Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley’s public signing of the state’s marriage equality bill was tempered by the threat of a referendum that will likely require state voters to determine the law’s fate.

Right now is the calm before the inevitable storm. Opponents of the law are gathering the 55,000 or so signatures they need, mostly by targeting churchgoers who are being urged by pastors to sign the petition. It seems unlikely they will fail in that signature-gathering effort. Meanwhile, the Marylanders for Marriage Equality coalition of local and national supporters is working to reorganize and hire someone to lead the campaign to preserve the law. The road ahead is daunting and will require a massive fundraising effort at a time when LGBT money is already needed for Obama’s re-election campaign, Tammy Baldwin’s U.S. Senate bid and marriage initiatives in a handful of other states. Make no mistake: the national network of LGBT donors is stretched thin.

The national advocacy group Freedom to Marry has invested in Maryland in the past, but announced last year that it would take a pass this time around. Evan Wolfson, the group’s president, told the Blade, “Freedom to Marry has made it clear to members of the coalition and to lawmakers that our goal is to win, not simply to pass a bill, if there is not sufficient groundwork and investment in a campaign to win at the ballot. We have continued to press for clarity and progress on benchmarks for success, and have urged elected officials, national organizations, and advocates on the ground to show the plan, investment, and activities needed now to build public support and succeed at the ballot, not just the legislature.”

USA: Freedom to Marry Launches New “Win More States” Effort With $250k Check From Facebook Co-Founder

Saturday, March 24th, 2012

Freedom to MarryGay marriage group Freedom to Marry on Thursday announced a campaign to fund fights in five 2012 marriage battleground states, with the first $250,000 coming from Chris Hughes, a founder of Facebook, and his husband-to-be, Sean Eldridge.

The group hopes its Win More States Fund will raise at least $3 million dollars to push for the New Jersey Legislature to override Governor Chris Christie’s veto of a gay marriage bill and win ballot initiatives in Maine, Minnesota, New Hampshire and Washington. (The New Hampshire House on Wednesday killed a proposed ballot initiative.)

Eldridge told The New York Times that securing marriage rights is “a top priority” for the couple.

CA: Sacramento Mayor Joins Marriage Equality Effort

Sunday, March 4th, 2012

Sacramento Mayor Kevin JohnsonJust got this from our friends at Equality Action Now:

On Friday morning, March 2, 2012, after a meeting with leadership of the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) community concerning gay rights issues, Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson joined a growing list of over 175 other Mayors and municipal leaders, including West Sacramento Mayor Christopher Cabaldon who signed early in the campaign, representing 32 states across the country, standing up publicly for marriage equality.

“Mayors for the Freedom to Marry” are a broad-based and nonpartisan group of mayors who believe “all people should be able to share in the love and commitment of marriage”. Though it took a while for Mayor Johnson to agree to sign the statement, in the end the mayor decided it is the right thing to do for LGBT citizens of Sacramento.

Leading a petition drive for Mayor Johnson’s participation was the Sacramento Stonewall Democrats. Over 350 people signed the petition which was personally presented to Mayor Johnson by Stonewall Democrat’s Board President, Sam Catalano and communications director, Neil Pople.

On behalf of the Board of Directors of Equality Action NOW, a grassroots civil rights organization based in Sacramento, several letters were sent back and forth between the mayor’s office explaining that marriage equality “is not a religious issue, but a civil issue that affects many Sacramento citizens as well as their families and allies”. Marriage Equality USA, a statewide group based in San Francisco also used their influence to help encourage Mayor Johnson to stand on the right side of civil rights and equality.

In part, the statement reads, “As mayors of great American cities, we proudly stand together in support of the freedom of same-sex couples to marry. We personally know many gay and lesbian people living in our cities who are committed, loving relationships, who are active participants in the civic life of our communities, and who deserve to be able to marry the person with whom they share their life.”

“Our cities derive great strength from their diversity, and gay and lesbian families are a crucial part.”

“We stand for the freedom to marry because it enhances the economic competitiveness of our communities, improves the lives of families that call our cities home, and is simply the right thing to do. We look forward to working to build an America where all people can share in the love and commitment of marriage with the person with whom they share their life.”

“It is a great day when we can work through our differences and personal beliefs to come to an agreement that marriage equality is a civil rights issue that harms no one, and actually enriches all citizens.” – Ken Pierce, President of the Board of Directors, Equality Action NOW.

US: 25 Big City Mayors Haven’t Signed Marriage Equality Pledge

Thursday, February 23rd, 2012

Mayors for the Freedom to Marry, a project of Evan Wolfson’s Freedom to Marry organization, asks city bosses to sign a pledge backing marriage equality. So far, 154 mayors have signed the pledge, with 25 coming from the top 50 most populous U.S. cities. But that means there are 25 big-city mayors who still haven’t signed.

Among them are Mike Rawlings of Dallas, who angered many with the following explanation: “I’m a bit pledge-phobic. I think America has got too many pledges out there and I think it’s simplistic and not substantive. I’m a mayor that wants to be substantive.”

CA: Gay Activists Put Pressure on Sacramento Mayor to Sign Marriage Equality Pledge

Wednesday, February 15th, 2012

Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson and Marriage EqualityMarriage rights activists are stepping up their pressure on Mayor Kevin Johnson to join dozens of other elected officials in supporting gay marriage.

Supporters of gay marriage were expected to drop off 338 signatures this morning at City Hall urging Johnson to join the Mayors for the Freedom to Marry. Despite telling reporters last week that he would read the pledge, Johnson still hadn’t read it as of this morning.

“Sacramento is one of the most diverse cities in America and a city like ours needs leaders willing to stand up for all of us,” Sam Catalano, president of the Stonewall Democrats, said in a statement. “Supporting marriage equality helps make our city stronger both socially and economically. We are all exceptionally hopeful that Mayor Kevin Johnson stands on the right side of history and we eagerly await his response.”

Monday, February 13th, 2012

Marriage Equality and the Democratic Party PlatformSupporters of gay marriage are calling on the Democratic National Committee (DNC) to add marriage equality to the party’s 2012 platform.

On Monday, Freedom to Marry launched the Democrats: Say I Do campaign.

“An overwhelming majority of Democrats support the freedom to marry, as do a significant majority of Independents and voters under 50 across the political spectrum,” said Evan Wolfson, founder and president of Freedom to Marry. “The Democratic Party has a noble history of fighting for the human and civil rights of all Americans. It’s now time for the national party to be true to its values and its voters and go unequivocally on the record for the freedom to marry.”
