Ohio Gay Marriage Ban RepealGay marriage supporters will resubmit a petition that seeks to repeal Ohio’s gay marriage ban after a first attempt was rejected, the Gay People’s Chronicle reported.

Voters in 2004 overwhelmingly approved a constitutional amendment defining marriage as a heterosexual union.

On March 1, the group Freedom to Marry Ohio submitted nearly 1,800 signatures to the office of Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine, the first step in putting the issue back on the ballot this fall or next.

AK: Do Gay Activists Have Opponents On the Run?

Thursday, March 22nd, 2012

Alaska Gay Rights InitiativeSupporters of a gay rights initiative in Anchorage, Alaska, have raised more than $230,000 while those against it have collected less than $5,000, the Anchorage Daily News reported.

The measure would help protect the city’s LGBT community by adding sexual orientation and gender identity to Anchorage’s anti-discrimination laws. The current laws protect individuals from discrimination based on color, race, marital status, religion and disabilities.

Backers of the initiative, which will be on the city ballot in April, received a $25,000 donation from Planned Parenthood of the Greater Northwest. The money will be used on advertising and other efforts to earn votes.

CA: Gay Activists Ask Ninth Circuit to Turn Down Prop 8 Appeal

Friday, March 2nd, 2012

Prop 8 AppealSupporters of same-sex marriage urged a federal appeals court in San Francisco Thursday to decline to reconsider a ruling that struck down California’s Proposition 8.

Last month, a three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled by a 2-1 vote that Proposition 8, a voter-approved ban on gay and lesbian marriage, violates the U.S. Constitution.

The sponsors of the initiative have asked the appeals court to have an expanded 11-judge panel reconsider that decision.

ID: Gay Activists Still Fighting for Rights

Sunday, February 26th, 2012

Idaho Gay RightsAfter what many local activists called a heartbreaking loss in Idaho, the Twin Falls Times-News reports that fight will go on even after the Senate State Affairs Committee nixed legislation that would’ve added LGBT protections to the Idaho Human Rights Act.

“I was honestly heartbroken at first, and then i slowly moved to being quite angry, and now I’m kind of just determined to keep fighting for the rest of the legislative session,” Cody Hafer, a statewide coordinator of the Add the Words campaign, told the Times-News’s Natalie Dicou.

The paper reports that activists have pledged to fight to add the words “sexual orientation” and “gender identity” to the state’s rights act until either a bill is printed or the legislative session ends. Lesbian state Senator Nicole LeFavour, a Democrat from Boise, tried earlier this month to add the words as an amendment to an unrelated bill, but that too failed to pass muster in the increasingly conservative state senate.

VT: Gay Activists Call on State’s Mayors to Support Federal Marriage Equality

Sunday, February 19th, 2012

Vermont Mayors and Marriage EqualityThe Vermont Freedom to Marry Task Force and Truth Wins Out announced the launch of a collaborative campaign this week calling on the state’s eight mayors to stand up for their lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender constituents by signing the Mayors for the Freedom to Marry Statement.

Constituents are hand-delivering and mailing letters to the mayors of Barre, Burlington, Montpelier, Newport, Rutland, St. Albans, Vergennes, and Winooski urging them to promptly add their names to the list of signatories, which currently numbers more than 150.

The statement, released last month by the national organization Freedom to Marry, is a public declaration of support for full federal civil marriage equality. Signers represent a broad-based coalition of mayors from cities and towns across America — large and small, from red and blue states alike — who pledge to work “to build an America where all people can share in the love and commitment of marriage.” However, at the time the statement was released, not one Vermont mayor had signed.

CA: Gay Activists Put Pressure on Sacramento Mayor to Sign Marriage Equality Pledge

Wednesday, February 15th, 2012

Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson and Marriage EqualityMarriage rights activists are stepping up their pressure on Mayor Kevin Johnson to join dozens of other elected officials in supporting gay marriage.

Supporters of gay marriage were expected to drop off 338 signatures this morning at City Hall urging Johnson to join the Mayors for the Freedom to Marry. Despite telling reporters last week that he would read the pledge, Johnson still hadn’t read it as of this morning.

“Sacramento is one of the most diverse cities in America and a city like ours needs leaders willing to stand up for all of us,” Sam Catalano, president of the Stonewall Democrats, said in a statement. “Supporting marriage equality helps make our city stronger both socially and economically. We are all exceptionally hopeful that Mayor Kevin Johnson stands on the right side of history and we eagerly await his response.”

The Backstory on President Obama’s Meeting With Gay Activists

Monday, February 13th, 2012

Note from Joe: Heather Cronk is the managing director of GetEQUAL and has recounted, below, the “back story” behind Thursday night’s $1.4 million Obama LGBT fundraiser. As we recently published, and as MetroWeekly discovered in interviews, so far, it sure seems that there were no real “asks” made of the President on a night when 40 LGBT high-dollar donors dined with him.

By telling the backstory about what happened with the Obama LGBT fundraiser this week, GetEQUAL will likely continue to be black-listed among the donor community. Given what we know about how things roll, the people who work for some of those donors who attended the high dollar event will likely do everything possible to ensure the group doesn’t get any resources at all. So if you appreciate this post, head over to www.getequal.org/donate and show them some love.

Here’s Heather…

Late last week, GetEQUAL got word that there was going to be a high-profile Obama/DNC fundraiser taking place in DC. There was no announcement for the event, and it seemed like the Obama campaign was trying to keep it secret. Joe Sudbay “broke” the story on AMERICAblog Gay (thankfully). Prior to hearing about the DC LGBT fundraiser, we at GetEQUAL had been busy planning to have a presence at upcoming fundraisers in places like Chicago and San Francisco to highlight and pressure the President broadly on LGBT issues, but this was an LGBT-specific event that opened up a new opportunity.

Marriage Equality Activists Rally in Colorado Springs

Thursday, January 12th, 2012

Colorado Civil Union RallyClaiming momentum is on their side, gay and lesbian advocates on Wednesday kicked off another push for civil unions in Colorado, vowing to “keep on fighting” after a spirited battle last year in the state legislature.

“It’s not a matter of if, it’s a matter of when,” said Brad Clark, executive director of One Colorado, an advocacy group.

Nearly 100 people gathered Wednesday evening at the Cornerstone Arts Center in Colorado Springs to support the Colorado Civil Union Act, which was introduced hours earlier into the General Assembly by Sen. Pat Steadman, D-Denver.
