VT: Gay Activists Call on State’s Mayors to Support Federal Marriage Equality

Sunday, February 19th, 2012

Vermont Mayors and Marriage EqualityThe Vermont Freedom to Marry Task Force and Truth Wins Out announced the launch of a collaborative campaign this week calling on the state’s eight mayors to stand up for their lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender constituents by signing the Mayors for the Freedom to Marry Statement.

Constituents are hand-delivering and mailing letters to the mayors of Barre, Burlington, Montpelier, Newport, Rutland, St. Albans, Vergennes, and Winooski urging them to promptly add their names to the list of signatories, which currently numbers more than 150.

The statement, released last month by the national organization Freedom to Marry, is a public declaration of support for full federal civil marriage equality. Signers represent a broad-based coalition of mayors from cities and towns across America — large and small, from red and blue states alike — who pledge to work “to build an America where all people can share in the love and commitment of marriage.” However, at the time the statement was released, not one Vermont mayor had signed.

CA: Gay Activists Put Pressure on Sacramento Mayor to Sign Marriage Equality Pledge

Wednesday, February 15th, 2012

Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson and Marriage EqualityMarriage rights activists are stepping up their pressure on Mayor Kevin Johnson to join dozens of other elected officials in supporting gay marriage.

Supporters of gay marriage were expected to drop off 338 signatures this morning at City Hall urging Johnson to join the Mayors for the Freedom to Marry. Despite telling reporters last week that he would read the pledge, Johnson still hadn’t read it as of this morning.

“Sacramento is one of the most diverse cities in America and a city like ours needs leaders willing to stand up for all of us,” Sam Catalano, president of the Stonewall Democrats, said in a statement. “Supporting marriage equality helps make our city stronger both socially and economically. We are all exceptionally hopeful that Mayor Kevin Johnson stands on the right side of history and we eagerly await his response.”

The Backstory on President Obama’s Meeting With Gay Activists

Monday, February 13th, 2012

Note from Joe: Heather Cronk is the managing director of GetEQUAL and has recounted, below, the “back story” behind Thursday night’s $1.4 million Obama LGBT fundraiser. As we recently published, and as MetroWeekly discovered in interviews, so far, it sure seems that there were no real “asks” made of the President on a night when 40 LGBT high-dollar donors dined with him.

By telling the backstory about what happened with the Obama LGBT fundraiser this week, GetEQUAL will likely continue to be black-listed among the donor community. Given what we know about how things roll, the people who work for some of those donors who attended the high dollar event will likely do everything possible to ensure the group doesn’t get any resources at all. So if you appreciate this post, head over to www.getequal.org/donate and show them some love.

Here’s Heather…

Late last week, GetEQUAL got word that there was going to be a high-profile Obama/DNC fundraiser taking place in DC. There was no announcement for the event, and it seemed like the Obama campaign was trying to keep it secret. Joe Sudbay “broke” the story on AMERICAblog Gay (thankfully). Prior to hearing about the DC LGBT fundraiser, we at GetEQUAL had been busy planning to have a presence at upcoming fundraisers in places like Chicago and San Francisco to highlight and pressure the President broadly on LGBT issues, but this was an LGBT-specific event that opened up a new opportunity.

Nearly 100 people gathered Wednesday evening at the Cornerstone Arts Center in Colorado Springs to support the Colorado Civil Union Act, which was introduced hours earlier into the General Assembly by Sen. Pat Steadman, D-Denver.

What Gay Activists Can Teach The Left

Monday, September 26th, 2011

Remember when you believed that if we just elected enough Democrats to Congress and took the White House, we could take this country back? We could stop giving tax breaks to people who didn’t need them so that we would have a shot at creating jobs, providing for those in need, and still break even. We could end government-inspired discrimination against people because of the way they look, who they love, or where they were born. And we could actualize “the moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal,” to quote Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama.

That was 2008.

As Keith Harrington, an environmental activist, wrote last month:

Three years ago, I spent a number of weekends going door to door in Virginia urging people to vote for our president. In that campaign I found a sense of pride, a sense of excitement, a sense of energizing virtue.

This weekend, I spent a good chunk of time training to do civil disobedience at President Obama’s door in the desperate hope that he’ll fulfill the promise that drove me onto the streets for him in 2008. And in so doing I’ve found the same sense of pride, the same excitement, and the same energizing sense of virtue that I did three years back.

NC: Asheville Activists Prepare to Fight Marriage Equality Ban

Sunday, September 18th, 2011

North Carolina Gay Marriage BanLess than a week after state lawmakers voted to put a question on May’s primary ballot to let voters decide whether the state Constitution should be amended to ban same-sex marriage, supporters on both sides of the issue are already positioning themselves for a months-long battle.

The proposed amendment, which will be on the May 8 ballot, has already divided those who support traditional marriage between a man and a woman and those who say the change in the Constitution would take away protections and benefits that now exist for people in same-sex and opposite-sex civil unions and domestic partnerships.

Bill Brooks, president and executive director of the N.C. Family Policy Council, which supports the amendment, said he hopes to see a positive campaign over the next eight months, focusing on the importance of traditional marriage.
