New Document Exposes Cynical NOM Plan to Drive Wedge Between LGBT and African-American Communities

Monday, March 26th, 2012

NOM LogoIt’s not like we didn’t think this was happening, but, wow, it’s really ugly to see it in writing.

Earlier tonight, Alvin McEwen tipped me off about some court documents that revealed NOM’s strategy. It’s ugly. From Alvin: The National Organization for Marriage’s unsuccessful fight to skirt Maine’s financial disclosure laws just backfired majorly on the group by revealing a distasteful part of its game plan to stop marriage equality.

Here’s the key passage about gays and blacks (and there’s also a strategy for Latinos):
The strategic goal of this project is to drive a wedge between gays and blacks – two key democratic constituencies.

President Obama Defends His Record With the LGBT Community

Thursday, February 9th, 2012

President Obama defended his administration’s record on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights Thursday, even as he faces renewed questions about his stance on gay marriage in the wake of a federal court decision affirming that a California ban on same-sex marriage is unconstitutional.

“The work that we’ve done with the LGBT community, I think, is just profoundly American,” Obama told a group of top Washington, D.C.-area fundraisers.

“You should be judged on the merits. That’s at the heart of the American dream,” Obama said. “That’s how you should be judged — not by what you look like, not by how you worship, not by where you come from, not by who you love.”

GOP Candidates on the LGBT Community

Wednesday, November 16th, 2011

Starting in August 2011, MEUSA delivered a survey to the office of each active, formally announced United States Presidential candidate via e-mail, web mail, and/or facsimile, and also via certified U.S. mail.

Each candidate’s survey showed his or her latest stand on each LGBT issue, based on speeches made, documents signed, and interviews given. All candidates were invited to notify MEUSA of updates to their positions as they occur, up through election day on 6 November 2012.

MEUSA has complied this latest side-by-side comparison showing what the current presidential candidates are planning for America’s 31 million LGBT people, “who remain 2nd class citizens during what is now the most overtly homophobic campaign season in our nation’s history: www.MarriageEquality.org/Election2012.”

RI: Civil Unions Law Gets Cool Reception From Gay Community

Wednesday, July 13th, 2011

LGBT Rhode Islanders have given a lukewarm reception to their state’s recently signed civil unions law. Clerks in the state’s two largest cities-Providence and Warwick-did not report any requests for applications on July 5, the first day same-sex couples were able to obtain one.

Rhode Island is the fifth state, along with New Jersey, Illinois, Delaware and Hawaii, to recognize civil unions.

The state’s first civil union ceremony was held in Burrillville on Saturday, July 9.

TN: Gay Community Fired Up Over Anti Gay Law

Sunday, June 19th, 2011

A state law that blocked a Nashville law protecting employees from being fired for sexual orientation has galvanized the gay and lesbian community, according to groups at the 23rd annual Nashville Pride Festival today.

Hundreds gathered today along downtown’s Riverfront Park to browse vendor booths, listen to bands and mingle in a celebration of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people and culture throughout Middle Tennessee.

Chris Sanders, president of Tennessee Equality Project, said the state law blocking cities from prohibiting employee discrimination puts the battle for gay rights in the same place that the fights for civil rights for blacks and women once reached.

White House Press Secretary: No Promises to Gay Community in 2012 Election

Monday, April 25th, 2011

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said Monday he doesn’t expect President Obama to issue a list of promises to the LGBT community as part of his re-election campaign as he did during the 2008 election season.

During a news conference, Carney made the remarks in response to a question from the Washington Blade on whether Obama would publish a list of objectives he wanted to achieve for the LGBT community during the second term of his administration.

“Well, I don’t anticipate reissuing a list,” Carney said. “I think his position on a number of issues has been clear and his accomplishments on a number of issues have been clear. So as is true with a number of the goals he set forward during his campaign and in the first two-plus years of his administration, he remains [committed to] those that are unfinished.”

The Most Important Thing You Can Do Tuesday is Vote

Monday, November 1st, 2010

We know the Democrats, with control of the House, Senate, and Presidency, have been disappointing over the last two years on major issues of importance to the LGBT community. But we also know that the vast majority of our community’s staunch supporters are Democrats, not Republicans. And we know that if the GOP is elected there will be specific, negative effects to our community as a direct result. To note just a few cases:

California: In our home state, California, if Democrats Jerry Brown (Governor) and Kamala Harris (Attorney General) are elected, the state will stay out of the Proposition 8 Case. But both their GOP counterparts Meg Whitman and Steve Cooley have promised to throw the state’s support behind Proposition 8, helping to keep the ban on gay marriage in the Golden State.

Washington DC: In the House, chairmanship of the committee that handles issues for Washington DC will, if the GOP takes the house, shift to Jason Chaffetz from Utah, one of the most rabidly anti-gay representatives in the House. Congress has jurisdiction over DC, and Congressman Chaffetz plans to push for congressional repeal of Washington DC’s new gay marriage law.

Iowa: In Iowa, not only are three of the justices who stood up for marriage equality last year in danger of losing their seats for it tomorrow, the GOP is also pushing for a Yes vote on a constitutional convention that would allow them to insert a ban on gay marriage directly into the constitution.

These are just a few examples of the lasting damage that could be done to our community tomorrow if we don’t stand up and vote.

Sure, withhold your money from the Democratic Party as a whole.

Sure, don’t vote for anti-gay democratic candidates (yes, Ruben Diaz, we mean you!).

But do go out and support the Democrats tomorrow in general, and the many friends of our community in the Democratic Party in particular.

We have the numbers to make a real difference and put a dent in the “Tea Party Revolution”. And if you don’t vote, you don’t get to complain when bad things happen to our community as a result.

So please, if you are a United States citizen, get out there and vote tomorrow, and forward this column to anyone else you know in our community who may be thinking about staying at home!

The book includes articles by Chuck Colbert, Lisa Keen, Karen Ocamb, Bob Roehr and others; essays by Wayne Besen, Sean Cahill, John D’Emilio, Kerry Eleveld, Rod McCullom, the Reverend Irene Monroe, Michelangelo Signorile, Pam Spaulding, Timothy Stewart-Winter, Andrew Tobias and Phill Wilson; and dozens of interviews with Chicago and national gay movement leaders. Obama Makes More Promises to the Gay Community

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010

President Obama vowed Tuesday night to push ahead with his gay rights agenda, assuring an audience of gay men and lesbians at the White House that he remains committed to repealing the Defense of Marriage Act, which allows states to refuse to recognize same same-sex marriages performed in other states.

“Committed gay and lesbian couples deserve the same rights and responsibilities afforded to any married couple in this country,” Mr. Obama declared, during a White House reception to celebrate June as gay and lesbian pride month.

Although he has promised to press Congress to repeal the 1996 Defense of Marriage law, Mr. Obama opposes same-sex marriage on religious grounds – a position that is a sore point with many gay rights advocates who see the president on the wrong side of an important civil rights issue. Instead, Mr. Obama favors civil unions, which he argues would afford gay men and women the same rights as married couples.

Singapore: Gays/Lesbians Rally for Rights at Pink Dot 2010

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

Singapore Pink Dot 2010Over 4,000 pink-attired people gathered at Hong Lim Park today at 6pm to form a giant pink dot in a show of support for inclusiveness, diversity and the freedom to love. This makes Pink Dot 2010 the largest public gathering ever seen at the Speakers’ Corner since its opening in 2000, and is nearly twice the number of people who turned up at last year’s event.

The milestone event, held for the second time here, is organised by a group of local volunteers and aims to raise awareness and foster deeper understanding of the basic human need to love and be loved, regardless of one’s sexual orientation. This year’s theme is family, and the peaceful event was attended by both straight and gay Singaporeans and permanent residents, some who came with their family members.

Pink Dot spokesperson Jack Yong said: “We are immensely gratified and touched by the show of solidarity and support that Singaporeans have given us. Pink Dot 2010 has reached out and moved even more Singaporeans, straight and gay.”
