President Obama Voices his Support for Marriage Equality

Wednesday, May 9th, 2012

Amidst speculation of his evolution on the issue of marriage equality, President Obama, today spoke of its finality.

By Melanie Nathan, May 09, 20112.

Speaking Wednesday with ABC News’ Robin Roberts, President Barack Obama spoke about his evolution toward full marriage equality for same-sex American couples.

He said that he and his administration have long “stood on the side of broader equality for the LGBT community,” pointing to the repeal of the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy and the decision to stop defending the Defense of Marriage Act in court, among others.

President Obama’s evolution is explained from these quotes which appeared within hours of the interview in the Los Angeles Times Article:-

“I had hesitated on gay marriage in part because I thought that civil unions would be sufficient,” he said. “And I was sensitive to the fact that for a lot of people, the word ‘marriage’ was something that evokes very powerful traditions, religious beliefs, and so forth.”

That changed, Obama said, as he reflected more on the relationships of friends and staff and the feelings of gay members of the military who “feel constrained.”  “At a certain point, I’ve just concluded that for me personally, it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same-sex couples should be able to get married,” he concluded. In the interview, Obama also reflected on the rapid change in public opinion on the issue, particularly among younger generations.

“When I go to college campuses, sometimes I talk to college Republicans who think that I have terrible policies on the economy, on foreign policy, but are very clear that when it comes to same-sex equality or, you know, sexual orientation that they believe in equality,” he said.

Obama noted that his daughters have friends who have same-sex parents. “There have been times where Michelle and I have been sitting around the dinner table, and we’re talking about their friends and their parents, and Malia and Sasha, it wouldn’t dawn on them that somehow their friends’ parents would be treated differently. It doesn’t make sense to them and, frankly, that’s the kind of thing that prompts a change in perspective,” he said.

LGBT activists are commenting with pride and admiration for the President:

John Lewis, MEUSA Legal Director, said, “I am thrilled that the dream of marriage equality is now so much closer, thanks to the President’s decisive leadership. Marriage is about love and commitment, and the President looked at this decision with his heart — not as a political calculation — and decided to stand on the side of love. In standing on the side of love, he also decided to stand on the right side of history.”

Robin Tyler, national activist and the original lesbian plaintiff to sue in the successful case (Tyler v State of California) that brought marriage equality for same sex couples to California, celebrates President Obama’s decision to come out for marriage equality today.

”There is absolutely no question of who I will support in the coming Presidential elections. Mitt Romney donated through his Mormon Church, $10,000 to Yes of Proposition 8. Donations to discrimination are not ‘charitable.’ Mitt Romeny violated our civil rights. We need a President who supports all American’s and their families, including LGBT ones. Today, President Obama showed that he has the courage to come out publicly and support marriage for lesbian and gay couples. There is actually no such thing as ‘gay’ marriage. There is no ‘gay driver’s license’ or ‘gay birth certificate.’ It is just marriage for same-sex adult couples. Our President has finally evolved!

There was never a doubt in my mind that the President had evolved on the issue of same-sex marriage; since recently the President had said he would sign the repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act , the legislation that bans same-sex couples who are legally married from participating in Federal civil law granted by marriage to heterosexual couples.  Now that the President has made it clear to all who could not read into this as indicative of his evolution, it could not be more clear that he actually does support gay marriage.

So well done to President Obama, the skeptics in the LGBTQI community can now focus on the re-election of a President who has actually already done more than any other to forward the interests of equality.

Politically, let us hope that those in the community who insisted Obama be overt in his stance now support him one hundred percent unconditionally in his bid for re-election, because you can be rest assured that FOX News, Santorum, Romney and Maggie Gallagher, to name but a few, will do everything in their power to make this the re-invigoration of the wedge issue many assumed may have dwindled.

MN: Mormon Church Urges Members to Join Marriage “Defense”

Wednesday, January 18th, 2012

Minnesota Gay Marriage Ban and the Mormon ChurchMinnesota’s Mormons were read a letter at church services this weekend in which they were urged to take part in the coming ballot campaign against same-sex marriage. Via Q Salt Lake:

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints read a letter to all Minnesota wards on Sunday, Jan. 15 reminding church-goers that “the family is the fundamental unit of society” and urged them to re-read the “Proclamation of the Family,” which begins, “We, the First Presidency and the Council of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, solemnly proclaim that marriage between a man and a woman is ordained of God and that the family is central to the Creator’s plan for the eternal destiny of His children.”

Church members were also asked to “prayerfully consider how to get involved,” according to the author of the blog, Key Lime Piety. The letter “concluded with a reminder that church buildings and directories are not to be used for political purposes – with this caveat: unless otherwise directed,” the article continued.

NC: Elections Official Resigns Over Marriage Equality Ban

Wednesday, January 11th, 2012

North Carolina Election OfficialSherre Toler, Director of Elections for Harnett County, NC for more than 11 years, resigned at the beginning of January because her position would not allow her to speak out against ballot efforts to amend the state constitution to ban same-sex marriage.

Wrote Toler in an email published on Blue NC:

Unfortunately, recent actions of the North Carolina General Assembly made it impossible for me to continue as Director of Elections as speaking publicly about candidates or issues appearing on the ballot is prohibited. In September, the legislature passed a bill requiring a referendum be placed on the May, 2012 primary ballot defining marriage as a “union between a man and a woman”. I cannot and will not be a party to such actions.

From Minnesotans United for All Families – Fundraising Request

Wednesday, November 16th, 2011

I’m really excited about this one, folks. This year, when you “Give to the Max,” you can help us educate Minnesotans about the importance of fairness when it comes to marriage for same-sex couples!

Give to the Max is a special day each year where Minnesota donors flood GiveMN.org to give to their favorite nonprofits. Last year, this amazing campaign generated more than $10 million for hundreds of organizations doing great work.

To capitalize on this amazing outpouring of support, we’ve joined with our partners at Freedom to Marry to start a joint Minnesotans United Education and Research Fund to help educate Minnesotans on why marriage matters.

Click here today to “Give to the Max” to the Minnesotans United Education and Research Fund. We need your help to educate Minnesota about fairness for every family!

Giving to this special fund on this special day can turbo-charge your contribution in two key ways.

  • During every hour of Give to the Max Day – November 16 – GiveMN.org will choose one donor during that timeframe and give $1,000 extra to the nonprofit of his or her choice.
  • Moreover, if our special fund is one of the top-performing nonprofits across the state, we’ll be eligible to receive a grant worth another $5,000, $10,000, or even $15,000!
  • Plus, just by being a part of this fantastic statewide effort, you’ll help us get our cause in front of thousands of die-hard donors who can help us build even more resources well into the future.

But we can’t do any of it – not raising extra funds or the important work of making Minnesota more fair – without your tireless support. Please “Give to the Max” this week to help us reinforce our Minnesota values across our state.

I’ve been a proud supporter of Give to the Max Day for years now, and I am thrilled that our organization is going to be a part of it this week.
I hope you’ll join us on Wednesday, November 16 to help push our movement to ever greater heights.

Thanks,

Richard Carlbom

MN: Conflicting Polls on Marriage Equality Ban

Friday, November 11th, 2011

Minnesota Gay Marriage PollsFour polls have been released this week showing different results among Minnesota’s electorate a year before the the 2012 vote on the controversial amendment to add a ban on same-sex marriage to the state constitution.

Two polls show that the amendment might get defeated while two others show a slight lead for anti-gay marriage activists.

On Thursday, the St. Cloud State University Survey was released showing that 47 percent of Minnesotans thought the constitution should not be amended and 44 percent said it should. The difference is within the poll’s 5 percent margin of error, making the result a statistical tie.

NC: Three Anti-Gay Groups Were the Force Behind Marriage Equality Ban

Sunday, November 6th, 2011

North Carolina Gay Marriage FightA trio of groups were behind the successful push to place a constitutional amendment barring same-sex marriage, as well as civil unions and domestic partnerships for gay and lesbian couples, on the 2012 primary ballot in North Carolina. Those groups — the Christian Action League, Return America and the North Carolina Family Policy Council — have a history of not only opposing any rights for LGBT people but also making false and inflammatory statements about the LGBT community.

The Christian Action League (CAL) got it’s start in 1937 as the Allied Church League, formed in response to the repeal of Prohibition. CAL continues to work to restrict access to alcohol and ban tobacco use, in addition to its opposition of rights for LGBT people.

CAL is one of only ten state-based affiliates of the American Family Association, an organization the Southern Poverty Law Center calls an anti-gay hate group.
