NC: GOP Claims Marriage Equality Ban Will Create Jobs

Thursday, October 27th, 2011

North Carolina Gay Marriage FightRepublicans took over the General Assembly 100 days ago, running on a platform of “jobs, jobs, jobs” for the most part. So how have they done?

One of the four most controversial actions includes the most recent. They want you and me to vote on a Marriage Amendment to the State Constitution that would ban gay marriage. One of our facebook friends Christy Kantor had this to say, “Why are they wasting precious time and money on an amendment to ban gay marriage when it is already illegal in our state? Our economy and employment should be their top priority!”

Ok. So what about one of the centerpieces of the session? That Constitutional Marriage Amendment you and I will vote on in May. “The best situation the social scientist tells us is for a man and woman to bring up children, and that’s important for the economy as well as the children,” said Stam. I asked, “How does that help the economy?” “All the studies show that children brought up in that circumstances are better off financially, they are better off emotionally, they are better off academically, and this is important to the long run status of the economy.”

MN: Some Catholics Upset With Church Push on Marriage Equality Ban

Thursday, October 27th, 2011

Minnesota Gay Marriage BanThe push by the Catholic Church to ban same-sex marriage in Minnesota is not sitting well with every Catholic in the state. This comes after the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis announced that they wanted an ad hoc committee in every Catholic church in the state to push the amendment.

One lay Catholic who works for the church in an affiliated organization did not want to be identified because she could lose her job, but she told the Minnesota Independent that the campaign supporting the marriage amendment was “offensive, divisive and against the image of Christ we see in the Gospels.”

That source stated as well “But honestly after the sex abuse scandal and the cover-ups made by the hierarchy, nothing they do shocks me anymore. After watching the Catholic Church use funds to pay for their lawyers, pay off victims and now shove through this amendment, I’ve decided to withhold my tithe from the church.”

NC: Rally Against Marriage Equality Ban Held in Charlotte

Monday, October 17th, 2011

North Carolina Gay Marriage FightActivists opposed to a constitutional amendment defining marriage as between a man and a woman gathered in uptown Charlotte Saturday.

The group hopes to influence voter opinion about the issue before Amendment 1 goes to the ballot in May. “It’s going to affect my relationship personally, because I do want to have a marriage with my partner,” said Jeff Enochs.

Enochs said an amendment in North Carolina defining marriage as between a man and a woman could also impact non-gay couples in civil unions for generations to come.

MN: Catholic Bishops Call Passage of Marriage Equality Ban a Top Priority

Saturday, October 15th, 2011

Minnesota Gay Marriage Ban AmendmentMinnesota’s Roman Catholic bishops are taking the unusual step of urging parish priests across the state to form committees to help get the proposed marriage amendment passed by voters in 2012.

“It is imperative that we marshal our resources to educate the faithful about the church’s teachings on these matters, and to vigorously organize and support a grass-roots effort to get out the vote to support the passage of this amendment,” Twin Cities Archbishop John Nienstedt wrote in a letter to his priests dated Oct. 4.

The letter asks parish priests to “appoint a captain or co-chairs to lead a special parish ad hoc committee to spearhead this effort.” Coming more than one year ahead of the November election, the move is the latest sign of the early intensity surrounding the amendment to change the state’s Constitution to define marriage as the union of one man and one woman.

MN: Is Marriage Equality Ban Doomed to Failure?

Sunday, October 9th, 2011

Minnesota Gay Marriage Ban AmendmentA proposed “pro-marriage” amendment will almost certainly die a slow, ignoble death in Minnesota next year. More than 8,000 attendees of the state fair, not traditionally a libertine demo, voiced their disapproval of the amendment last month. Now, several Republican pols have voiced theirs, too. “I don’t think neighbors should be voting on what neighbors can and can’t do in the privacy of their homes,” said State Rep. John Kriesel, according to St. Paul’s MSNBC affiliate, KARE. Sen. Wheelock Whitney said, movingly:

“I have a gay son. I have a gay grandson. I love them. I’m proud of them. And I don’t like to see them discriminated against in any way.”

The video in which these words are captured profiles some members of the fam-vals crowd, too, including a debonair looking silver fox named Chuck Darrell, who promises to foment a groundswell of support for “traditional” marriage in the coming year. But Darrell seems pretty mild, and given the state fair poll, the pro-gay Republicans, and Minnesota’s traditionally live-and-let-live attitude (‘cuz, really, who’s got the energy to judge people when it’s minus-30 outside?), it seems reasonable to assume Darrell and his co-bigots are facing an uphill slog.

GOP Head of Armed Services Committee Will Hold Up Defense Bill for Military Gay Marriage Ban

Saturday, October 8th, 2011

Rep. Buck McKeon, the chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, has said he would rather pass no defense bill at all than one which doesn’t ban marriage for gay and lesbian service members.

Late last month Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness Clifford Stanley issued a memo which stated that chaplains may officiate the marriage and civil union ceremonies of gay couples in states where it’s legal, including those taking place on military installations.

The issue had previously surfaced and the House responded in May by attaching a provision to the defense bill that bans such unions.

NC: Governor Perdue Opposes Marriage Equality Ban

Saturday, October 8th, 2011

North Carolina Gay Marriage FightNorth Carolina Governor Beverly Perdue announced on Friday she’ll vote against a proposed constitutional amendment that would ban gay marriage in the state, the AP reported.

Voters in May will decide whether to bar the state from legalizing marriage, civil unions and possibly domestic partnerships for gay and lesbian couples.

Perdue, a 64-year-old Democrat, said she’s opposed to allowing such unions but added that the economy must take precedence over social issues.

MN: Republicans Join Effort to Block Marriage Equality Ban

Thursday, October 6th, 2011

Minnesota Gay Marriage Ban AmendmentA handful of Minnesota Republicans vowed Thursday to help defeat next year’s ballot measure that will ask voters to ban same-sex marriage in the state constitution.

“I’m a Republican because I believe in individual liberty and freedom,” said state Rep. John Kriesel, R-Cottage Grove, one of only four majority Republicans in the Minnesota House who in May voted against putting the question on next year’s ballot. “I believe this is an attack on that.”

Kriesel was joined at the press conference by Wheelock Whitney, a party eminence who unsuccessfully ran for governor for the GOP in 1982, and a handful of other Republicans, though Kriesel was the only current Republican elected official. Members of the group said they tried to build support among Republicans to help defeat the ballot measure and get out a message that being Republican doesn’t necessarily mean opposing gay marriage.

NC: Gay Ministers Protest Marriage Equality Ban Measure

Tuesday, October 4th, 2011

North Carolina Gay Marriage FightAs the battle over same-sex marriage continues to cause tensions around the country, a group of ministers and their supporters are launching a protest Monday afternoon in favor of marriage equality in North Carolina.

After the state legislature voted last month to put a constitutional amendment that would effectively ban same-sex marriage on the state’s 2012 election ballot, gay couples will line up on Monday at the Buncombe County Register of Deeds Office in Asheville, N.C., to request marriage licenses.

Those requests will be denied, as marriage is in the state is currently legally defined as being between a man and a woman. The amendment that the couples are protesting would enshrine that definition in the state’s constitution.

NC: GOP Rep Says Marriage Equality Ban Goes Too Far

Monday, October 3rd, 2011

North Carolina Gay Marriage FightNorth Carolina Rep. Renee Ellmers has said she opposes a proposed constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage in the state.

Ellmers, a conservative Republican and tea party favorite, says the measure approved last month by lawmakers and sent to voters is too aggressive.

Voters in May will decide whether to bar the state from legalizing marriage, civil unions and possibly domestic partnerships for gay and lesbian couples.
