GOProud’s Chris Barron: Amendment One is simple bigotry – NC is better than that

Monday, April 30th, 2012

 NC is better than that

See Pam Spaulding’s foreward on her site – (link below)
Christopher R. Barron is co-founder of GOProud and serves as its Chief Strategist. GOProud   is often derided in the LGBT community; as a gay conservative organization (of the free market, limited government variety) it is seen as reflexively supportive of conservative policies and politicians that come at the expense of LGBT rights. ….

My North Carolina ties are deep. I grew up in Goldsboro, North Carolina. I attended undergrad at UNC-Greensboro and East Carolina University and got my law degree from Wake Forest. Both of my brothers still live in North Carolina with their wives and children. I will always consider North Carolina home, which is why I am passionately urging every North Carolinian – whether liberal or conservative – to vote against Amendment 1.

I am lucky enough to be legally married to my partner of 10 years under the laws of the District of Columbia where we live. However, you don’t have to gay or in favor of gay marriage to oppose Amendment 1.

Amendment 1 not only bans gay marriage, it is also so broadly written that it bans civil unions, domestic partnerships and threatens to outlaw any benefits offered to same-sex couples. While I support marriage equality, I understand that the country is still debating this issue, and that different states are coming to different conclusions and that will continue. This debate is healthy, and reflects the best our democracy has to offer. There is simply no reason to end this debate for all time with a Constitutional amendment.

The law in North Carolina is already clear. Whether I like it or not, marriage is defined as between a man and a woman.

What is really motivating this amendment, is what makes it so dangerous for my home state. What really motivates this amendment isn’t about protecting “traditional marriage” or making sure every child has a mother and father. No, what motivates this amendment is simple bigotry – and North Carolina is better than that.

MD, USA: Cardinal Orders Priests to Read Anti Gay Letter in Churches

Monday, April 30th, 2012

Maryland: Cardinal Orders Priests to Read Anti Gay Marriage Letter in ChurchesIs it just me, or are these news items becoming a daily occurrence?

Here’s the latest, courtesy of popular LGBT blog Joe.My.God: The office of Baltimore Cardinal Edwin O’Brien required that a pro-marriage-discrimination letter authored by the cardinal himself be read aloud at Mass this past weekend as part of a petition drive to collect the signatures needed to ensure that a statewide referendum to overturn Maryland’s new marriage equality law makes it onto the ballot in November.

The cardinal addressed Catholics directly in the letter: “Today after Mass, you will have the opportunity to sign this petition, and I strongly encourage you to do so.”

Matt Baume’s Marriage News Watch 4/30/12

Monday, April 30th, 2012

Civil unions advance in Colorado, but old foes are joining forces in Maine. There’s just a few days left until North Carolina votes on an extreme constitutional amendment, and the race is getting closer and closer every day. And new research has shown a promising trend when it comes to public opinion.

Scotland: Competing Campaigns For and Against Marriage Equality

Sunday, April 29th, 2012

Scotland Marriage Equality CampaignsA campaign group opposed to legalising gay marriage is planning to deliver leaflets to almost 300,000 homes ahead of this week’s council elections. Scotland for Marriage said it hoped to leaflet every house in Glasgow at a cost of 15,000 Pounds.

But a separate coalition of faith groups will launch their own campaign on Monday backing a change in the law.

The Scottish government has said it “tends towards the view” that same-sex marriages should be introduced. It is currently considering the responses it received to a public consultation on the issue, and has said faith groups and their celebrants should not be obliged to solemnise the ceremonies.

Scathing Response to Dustin Lance Black’s Threat to Withdraw Support for Obama

Sunday, April 29th, 2012

In an article entitled “Wise Up Dustin Lance Black on the LGBTQ Nation website, Melanie Nathan, Blogger and Activist,  hits back with a scathing response to Dustin Lance Black’s threat to withdraw support for President Obama:

The moment I saw Dustin Lance Black’s headline in the Hollywood Reporter all my admiration came a-tumbling.

While one cannot disregard the work of the screenwriter turned activist and its impetus on marriage equality, his latest critique of President Obama, and worse yet its luminous abode engorges like an unwelcome cloud on a sunny day. As an activist in the community, I want to clearly disassociate myself from the ominous loom of Black’s threatening blur.

The headline and byline present a pompous lead into an arrogant read: “Hollywood & Politics: Dustin Lance Black Blames Obama and Romney for the Mess of Gay Marriage (Opinion) — by Dustin Lance Black.”

In his article, Black attempts to connect President Obama’s record on LGBT issues to the non-record and vacillation, not to mention the irrelevance at this time, of Mitt Romney. Black says “both candidates are “up in the air” on the equal rights issue.” This trite and ill timed analogy is not only inaccurate but an insult.

Black throws a crumb or two with his cryptic mention of the Department of Justice and the repeal of “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell,” yet his stance fails to elucidate on so much more that indicates Obama’s attitude towards LGBTI rights, both here in the USA and internationally.

When, in the article, Black throws a reckless “but after all the hope and change LGBT people were promised four years ago, many are frustrated with Obama’s sluggish, self-described “evolution” on the issue of marriage equality,” I hear words out of context and in shallow meaningless void, words that indicate a misunderstanding of the milieu and politics.

Black is absolutely incorrect in his assertion that President Obama has yet to “evolve” on the issue of marriage equality, as he buys into the rhetoric that died when the Respect for Marriage Act was introduced last year by Senator Feinstein, as repeal legislation for the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). Soon thereafter, Obama indicated he would sign the legislation into law.

Notably, The Washington Post headline read, “Obama backs bill to repeal Defense of Marriage Act” — how much more evolving could one do than that?

NC, USA: Legislative Overreach May Cost Amendment One Supporters

Sunday, April 29th, 2012

NC, USA: Legislative Overreach May Cost Amentment One SupportersWhen you don’t have any other card to play when it comes to discriminating against LGBTs, out comes the bible. Without fail; it’s been clear from Day One that the people at Vote for Marriage NC could not find a way to make the case to add a measure to the state constitution to “protect marriage” without conflating church and state and preying upon fears and ignorance of voters. Its latest volley – recruiting Franklin Graham, the anti-gay preacher son of Billy Graham for its radio ad, released Friday (N&O):

The Rev. Franklin Graham has recorded a message supporting a proposed amendment to North Carolina’s constitution that would limit traditional marriage as the only recognized domestic legal union in the state.

The pro-amendment Vote FOR Marriage NC released late Friday the audio message from Graham, the son of evangelist Billy Graham and head of the Samaritan’s Purse organization in Boone.

Franklin Graham asks listeners to “take a stand on God’s definition of marriage” between a man and a woman and vote for the amendment on the May 8 primary ballot. Anne Graham Lotz – Franklin Graham’s sister – also has said she supports the amendment.

Marriage Equality is Inevitable, Even in Alabama

Sunday, April 29th, 2012

Marriage Equality in AlabamaThere have been politicians and preachers and letter writers in this state who proclaim that “there will never be gay marriage in Alabama.” But “never” is a long time — and, in fact, recently I have heard even the most conservative religious leaders concede that the legalization of same-sex marriage is inevitable.

There is an abundance of misinformation about same-sex marriage, some of it purposely distorted in order to sway opinion. Why Marriage Matters Alabama is a group that has formed to educate the people of Alabama about marriage equality.

I know gay and lesbian couples who have been legally married in other states, or who have had commitment ceremonies in this state, and they have something in common with the opposite-sex couples that I know: They marry because they fall in love, they want to make public their commitment to one another, and they want to be recognized as a family.
