GOProud’s Chris Barron: Amendment One is simple bigotry – NC is better than that

 NC is better than that

See Pam Spaulding’s foreward on her site – (link below)
Christopher R. Barron is co-founder of GOProud and serves as its Chief Strategist. GOProud   is often derided in the LGBT community; as a gay conservative organization (of the free market, limited government variety) it is seen as reflexively supportive of conservative policies and politicians that come at the expense of LGBT rights. ….

My North Carolina ties are deep. I grew up in Goldsboro, North Carolina. I attended undergrad at UNC-Greensboro and East Carolina University and got my law degree from Wake Forest. Both of my brothers still live in North Carolina with their wives and children. I will always consider North Carolina home, which is why I am passionately urging every North Carolinian – whether liberal or conservative – to vote against Amendment 1.

I am lucky enough to be legally married to my partner of 10 years under the laws of the District of Columbia where we live. However, you don’t have to gay or in favor of gay marriage to oppose Amendment 1.

Amendment 1 not only bans gay marriage, it is also so broadly written that it bans civil unions, domestic partnerships and threatens to outlaw any benefits offered to same-sex couples. While I support marriage equality, I understand that the country is still debating this issue, and that different states are coming to different conclusions and that will continue. This debate is healthy, and reflects the best our democracy has to offer. There is simply no reason to end this debate for all time with a Constitutional amendment.

The law in North Carolina is already clear. Whether I like it or not, marriage is defined as between a man and a woman.

What is really motivating this amendment, is what makes it so dangerous for my home state. What really motivates this amendment isn’t about protecting “traditional marriage” or making sure every child has a mother and father. No, what motivates this amendment is simple bigotry – and North Carolina is better than that.

GOProud Ad Attacks Democrats, Including Barney Frank

Friday, October 22nd, 2010

GOProudProof again that GOProud is a republican group that doesn’t give a sh*t about gay issues:

“They’re catty… they’re arrogant… and they’re in charge!” So says a new TV attack ad modeled after The Real Housewives of D.C. and aimed at Congressional Democrats.

The 30-second “Real Democrats of Washington, D.C.” ad hit the airwaves on Oct. 21 courtesy of conservative gay group GOProud, reported the New York Times that same day. The spot targeted Barney Frank, Barbara Boxer, and Nancy Pelosi, respectively, and blamed Democrats for the economic slump and high unemployment.

The ads are slated to air in Pelosi’s and Boxers’ home state of California and Frank’s home state of Massachusetts, as well as in Hawaii and New York. The ad is aimed at GLBT voters and young women, and so is running on cable channels Bravo and Lifetime.

Ann Coulter to GOProud: Marriage Not a Civil Right

Sunday, September 26th, 2010

Ann Coulter - GOProudThe debate about whether Ann Coulter is pro- or anti-gay was not settled Saturday night after her highly-anticipated appearance Saturday at Homocon 2010, the first annual convention of gay conservatives sponsored by gay GOP group GOProud.

Coulter had received heat from social conservatives for her decision to speak at the New York City event.

The conservative celebrity was called a “deserter” by the Christian conservative group American Family Association (AFA). “Count Ann Coulter and Glenn Beck as the latest deserters in the culture war and in the battle for sexual normalcy,” AFA’s Bryan Fischer wrote at the group’s website, referring to Beck’s recent pronouncement that gay marriage is not a threat. “They have flinched at ‘precisely that little point which the world and the devil … are attacking,’ and so have forfeited the right to consider themselves any longer culture warriors.”

GOProud Stays At Hotel Owned By Anti Gay Marriage Advocate

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

Hosting a reception today for Tammy Bruce, the lesbian conservative radio show host who believes marriage should be reserved for heteros, GOProud has taken over part of the Manchester Grand Hyatt in San Diego. And they’re loving it!

Chairman Christopher Barron, who will likely be working on his red tan by the pool, isn’t afraid of you homos calling for a boycott of the hotel over owner Doug Manchester’s $125,000 donating to pass Prop 8. “Dear Boycotters of the Manchester Grand Hyatt – It’s really really nice here. That is all :D ,” he tweeted today.

CA: Why is GOProud Going After the Gay Friendly Candidate?

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

Tom Campbell, a former Republican congressman from California, decided late last year to drop his bid for Governor of the Golden State and instead join the race the GOP Senate primary in the bid to unseat Democratic Senator Barbara Boxer.

Early on, some feared that Campbell’s entry would split the socially moderate vote between Campbell and Carly Fiorina, the former head of Hewlett-Packard, leaving social conservative, State Senator Chuck Devore, as the winner. Instead, Devore is trailing in third, while Fiorina and Campbell duke it out.

GOProud is a little different. It tends to be in tune with the conservative movement and tackles the same issues that the wider movement deals with, such as taxes. So with that, GOProud has come out against supporting Tom Campbell. Why would a gay GOP not support a pol that supports gay marriage? Because he hasn’t signed a no-tax pledge. In a press release, they denounce Campbell by bringing up the ghost of Dede Scozzafava, the New York Republican who was forced from a congressional race by her far right opponent, Doug Hoffman.
