NY: Governor Cuomo Signs Marriage Equality Law – Weddings Begin in 30 Days

Friday, June 24th, 2011

Governor Andrew CuomoGov. Andrew Cuomo has signed New York’s gay marriage bill, starting what is expected to be a crush of gay weddings starting in 30 days, reports the Associated Press.

The Democratic governor signed the measure shortly before midnight Friday, following up on a promise to put his name on the legislation as soon as he received it rather than wait the usual 10 days to sign it for it to become law.

New York lawmakers narrowly voted to legalize same-sex marriage, handing activists a breakthrough victory in the state where the gay rights movement was born.

NY: Cuomo Thinks “Votes Will Be There” in Senate for Marriage Equality

Wednesday, June 15th, 2011

New York is moving closer to becoming the largest state to grant same-sex couples the right to marry. Four lawmakers who voted against gay marriage two years ago, including one Republican, declared on Monday that they would now vote in favor of allowing gays to wed.

Their public statements–deliberately timed to emerge just before the end of the legislative session–added significant momentum behind passage of same-sex marriage legislation. Shortly afterward, after huddling with gay leaders, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said he would advance a gay-marriage bill, setting the stage for a vote this week.

“This is a very significant development…I believe the votes will be there for marriage equality,” said Mr. Cuomo, a Democrat. “We’re moving toward the goal line, but we’re not there yet. We need Republicans to take up this issue.”

NY: Governor Cuomo Calls Monday Afternoon Strategy Session on Marriage Equality Bill

Monday, June 13th, 2011

With an uncertain vote possible by midweek, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo is summoning elected officials, gay rights advocates and labor groups to the State Capitol building on Monday afternoon for a final strategy session on how to legalize same-sex marriage, according to people briefed on the plans.

The meeting — to be attended by City Council Speaker Christine C. Quinn and Senator Thomas K. Duane, among others — will be held amid a swirl of last-minute activity on the issue, ranging from a new batch of statewide television commercials to local lobbying pushes in favor of gay marriage and against it.

The secret session is expected to tackle the two biggest questions hanging over the issue for gay marriage advocates: whether Republican leaders, who control the Senate, will allow a vote to be taken, and, if they do, whether there is sufficient bipartisan support to pass a bill.

NY: Cuomo Regrouping After Marriage Equality Comments

Friday, May 13th, 2011

Capitol Tonight’s Liz Benjamin says that New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is experiencing some fallout following his remarks this week that a marriage equality bill won’t get a vote unless the Senate votes are there to pass it:

…the governor’s comments this week that he doesn’t want to see a bill go to the floor if it doesn’t have sufficient votes to pass was seen as a setback by a number of LGBT advocates, who told me they worry that would give an out to Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos, who doesn’t want to anger the Conservative Party with the 2012 elections looming.

Several sources involved in the coordindated campaign told me the Cuomo administration has called a meeting in NYC today in hopes of regrouping.

NY: Cuomo Says No Marriage Equality Vote Unless Senate Votes Are There

Wednesday, May 11th, 2011

Governor Andrew CuomoNew York Governor Andrew Cuomo won’t risk a marriage equality vote unless the votes are there in the Senate, he told reporters today, following the introduction of a same-sex marriage bill by Daniel O’Donnell in the Assembly yesterday.

Said Cuomo, according to Capital Tonight:

“This has never been about, on marriage equality, a vote in the Assembly primarily. the assembly has passed it before. People expect it will pass again. The question is what’s going to happen in the Senate. The discussions that I’ve had with the collective group that is working on this in a unified way is we want to pass a bill. we don’t want to bring a bill up in the Senate that will fail, right?”

NY: Governor Cuomo Wants Marriage Equality Bill Passed By June 20th

Wednesday, May 11th, 2011

The Governor of New York, who is leading the campaign for marriage equality in his state, wants the legislation passed by June 20:

Cuomo demanded the Legislature pass the major pillars of his agenda: legalization of same-sex marriage, ethics reform and a property tax cap.

“June 20 is the day that the Legislature ends, and June 20 is D-Day for us,” Cuomo said. “Tell your legislators it’s very simple: Pass the bills or don’t come home. Period.”

NY: Cuomo Promises Statewide Tour for Marriage Equality, Other Issues

Wednesday, May 4th, 2011

They’re hitting the road. Governor Andrew Cuomo and his cabinet plan to hold events around the state in the coming weeks to build popular support for three key issues: Gay marriage, an ethics overhaul and a property tax cap.

“Editorial boards, events. How did we get the budget passed? It passed because I did dozens and dozens of events,” Cuomo said.

The long-expected barnstorming campaign comes within the last two months of the legislative session. And while the tax cap has broad support reflected in public opinion polls, the governor may have a difficult time getting it through the Democratic-led Assembly.

NY: Governor Cuomo Promises Marriage Equality Vote Within 6-8 Weeks

Wednesday, March 30th, 2011

New York Gay MarriageAfter making Albany heel when it comes to the budget, Gov. Andrew Cuomo has promised a gay marriage vote in the upcoming six to eight weeks.

Cuomo has always promised he would tackle marriage equality, so this is no shock. Will it pass the legislature? Hard to say. Sure a late January Quinnipiac University poll showed 56 percent of state voters support gay marriage. Power players like Mayor Michael Bloomberg, U.S. Sens. Chuck Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand are on board. Let’s not forget two former Big Apple Mayors, David Dinkins and Ed Koch, made their support public. Finally there are the famous, such as Russell Simmons and Joan Rivers (go the New Yorkers for Marriage Equality if you want to see their vids).

High polling figures, a popular governor playing point, and positive buzz. It wouldn’t shock if some see gay marriage in New York a slam dunk.
