HI: Governor Lingle Compares Gay Marriage to Incest

Sunday, July 11th, 2010

In announcing her decision to veto a civil unions bill approved by lawmakers, Hawaii Governor Linda Lingle insisted she had treated supporters of a civil unions bill with “respect and dignity.” But in her first interview since that announcement, Lingle likened gay marriage to an incestuous relationship.

Saying the legislation had “touched the hearts and minds of our citizens as no other social issue of our day,” Lingle sounded concerned about how the bill would affect all the people of Hawaii.

“For those people who want to make this into a civil rights issue, and of course those in favor of the bill, they see it as a civil rights issue,” she said. “And I understand them drawing that conclusion. But people on the other side would point out, well, we don’t allow other people to marry even – it’s not a civil right for them. First cousins couldn’t marry, or a brother and a sister and that sort of thing.”

HI: Opinions on Governor Lingle’s Veto of Civil Unions Bill

Wednesday, July 7th, 2010

In April, the Hawaii House passed a bill granting civil union privileges to same-sex couples. On Tuesday, outgoing Hawaii Governor Laura Lingle, a Republican, vetoed the measure, arguing that the legislation created “marriage by another name” and should be placed before voters. Hawaii has seen fierce debates over gay marriage in the past, with the state supreme court overturning a ban in 1993, and voters amending the constitution in 1998 to permit a gay marriage ban once again. The Hawaii ACLU and Lambda Legal have announced plans to sue the state. Meanwhile, outrage over the measure has swept the left-leaning blogosphere. Here’s why:

Lingle Disingenuous? Matthew Rettenmund of gay-rights blog Towelroad fumes, “While she states her veto has nothing to do with her personal position against ‘same-gender marriage’ (her term) or political considerations, she also takes the opportunity to slam the Democratic’led legislature for forcing her hand. A farce.”

Will Be Remembered for Thwarting Key Bill Michael A. Jones of the Gay Rights blog at Change.org doesn’t hold back. “Let this be the legacy of Gov. Linda Lingle. Given the opportunity to fix a discriminatory law that clearly treats gays and lesbians differently and denies them many benefits, Gov. Lingle chose to stand on the side of inequality and intolerance. And she should be remembered as the Governor that could have moved Hawaii an inch closer toward equal rights, but instead deflected on a major civil rights issue.”

HI: Lingle Gives In to Bigotry, Vetoing Civil Unions Bill: It’s Just “Marriage By Another Name”

Wednesday, July 7th, 2010

Governor Linda LingleCalling it “marriage by another name,” Hawaii Gov. Linda Lingle has just announced that she will VETO her state’s civil unions bill. Adding insult to her bigotry, invited to the announcement was the now-retired Hawaii Supreme Court Justice who first got the state’s marriage equality ball rolling in 1993.

Justice Steven H. Levinson’s 1993 opinion stated that laws prohibiting same-sex couples the right to marry violated equal protection rights unless the state could show a “compelling reason” for such discrimination. Seventeen years, a Constitutional amendment and many battles later, Levinson, now retired, is among those who were invited to the governor’s office to witness her announce her decision on House Bill 444 later today, he told Civil Beat this morning.

Anti-gay groups such as the Catholic nutters Tradition, Values, and Property held vigil outside the state house, saying the rosary in the hopes of warding off gay voodoo. Another group circled the state house seven times, blowing on a shofar. The Maui Time prepared the below two possible covers for tomorrow in advance of Lingle’s announcement. Now we know which one goes to press.

HI: Lingle Weighs Civil Unions Bill Decision

Monday, July 5th, 2010

We are on the eve of one of Governor Linda Lingle’s most highly-anticipated decisions. Governor Lingle must determine by Tuesday, July 6th the outcome of House Bill 444.

Her options are to sign it, veto, or allow it to become law without her signature.

“I really thought about this more than I thought about any other piece of legislation and any other issue that’s faced society,” said Gov. Lingle.

HI: Tuesday is the Deadline to Sign/Veto Civil Unions Bill

Sunday, July 4th, 2010

Chuck Spence fervently hopes Hawaii’s same-sex civil unions bill becomes law on Tuesday – and not just for philosophical reasons. The owner of the Maui Sunseeker, a 17-room, gay-oriented inn in Kihei, Spence expects bookings to markedly pick up if the contentious measure becomes law.

“Gay and lesbian clientele prefer to vacation in states that are sympathetic to their causes,” he said.

But Honolulu businessman Francis Oda, who heads the conservative Hawaii Family Forum, insists his concerns about civil unions center on morals and values, not a few more dollars in the till.

HI: Governor Lingle Receives 7,500 Letters, Postcards in Favor of Civil Unions Bill

Friday, July 2nd, 2010

Hawaii Gov. Linda Lingle has received an estimated 7500 cards and letters urging to her to support her state’s pending civil unions bill. Lingle has until Sunday to decide on whether to veto the bill or allow it to become law without her signature.

Two weeks ago she listed the bill among her potential vetoes in order that the legislature prepare for a possible override.

“We have letters and signatures from a broad demographic – the straight community, the gay community, across the state, across the country,” said Michael Golojuch Jr., of the GLBT Caucus of the Democratic Party of Hawaii and Parents, Families & Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG)-Oahu. “Our online petition has signatures from Venezuela, South Korea, Australia. It’s clear that the world is watching how Hawaii decides this issue.”

Send a Letter to Hawaiian Governor Linda Lingle

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

Hawaiian activists are asking for your help in a snail mail campaign to convince Gov. Linda Lingle not to veto the state’s pending civil unions bill. Lingle has deluged with letters from our enemies, so let’s send her some positive messages of our own.

Two suggested lines for your letter: “We are from _____ and we would sure love to have our civil union in Hawaii,” and “We recently got a civil union in _____ but would much rather have had it in Hawaii.”

Letters should be mailed to:
The Honorable Linda Lingle
Governor, State of Hawaii
Executive Chambers
State Capitol
Honolulu, Hawaii 96813

You’ll need to send your message this week for it to arrive on time.

HI: Governor Lingle Puts Civil Unions Bill on “Potential Veto” List

Monday, June 21st, 2010

In April, Hawaii’s House of Representatives gave a highly controversial civil unions bill (H.B. 444) final legislative approval, voting 31-20 in favor of the measure on the last day of the legislative session. The Senate passed the bill in January by a wide margin. Republican Governor Linda Lingle had urged lawmakers not to take up the bill, but after the House of Representatives passed the legislation, Lingle said that she would “carefully review” it. However, the latest news is that Lingle has now put the bill on her potential veto list.

The bill, which was hailed as being “historic” by supporters, would allow same-sex couples the same rights, responsibilities and benefits of marriage. It would also recognize same-sex unions from other states. The bill is also rather unique in that it allows both same-sex couples and opposite-sex couples the option of being joined in a civil partnership.

On Thursday, Lt. Gov. James Aiona indicated that Lingle has placed the civil unions bill on her veto list that she will present to lawmakers on Monday. “It will be a potential veto and the governor right now is crafting her decision as to whether or not she will or will not veto that bill… The deadline for that is July 6,” Aiona said. Aiona himself has publicly stated that he is against the bill.

HI: Governor Lingle Consults With Pro & Anti Gay Rabbis On Civil Unions Bill

Sunday, June 13th, 2010

Rabbis Itchel Krasnjansky and Peter Schaktman hail from different branches of Judaism and hold starkly contrasting views on whether same-sex couples should be permitted to form civil unions in Hawaii. What they have in common is the ear of Republican Gov. Linda Lingle, who has until June 21 to announce whether she may veto the only pending civil unions legislation in the nation.

Lingle, in the final months of her second and last term, faces a momentous decision that carries political and legal implications. For the rabbis, with whom the governor has consulted on the issue, her choice is about much more.

Krasnjansky, who heads the Orthodox community group Chabad of Hawaii, said the Torah teaches that homosexuality, and by extension same-sex marriage, “is not something that should be condoned or should be legalized,” he said.

HI: Governor Lingle: Civil Unions are Same Sex Marriage

Sunday, May 16th, 2010

Gov. Linda Lingle said yesterday that she has not made up her mind on civil unions but described the bill passed by the state Legislature as the equivalent of same-sex marriage. Her description is identical to complaints from religious conservatives who oppose civil unions and to a resolution approved yesterday by state Republicans who want her to veto the bill.

“It does appear to me on reading it, that it really is same-sex marriage, but by a different name,” Lingle told reporters during a break at the state GOP convention at the Hilton Hawaiian Village in Waikiki. “But I want to wait and hear people out.”

Lingle has said in the past that she would consider some form of domestic partnership legislation but she has opposed same-sex marriage.
