HI: Will Gov Lingle Stick to Campaign Promise to Allow Civil Unions?

Sunday, May 9th, 2010

It was eight years ago that then-candidate for governor Linda Lingle promised that if elected she would not veto domestic partnership legislation. It was during a live debate broadcast on PBS Hawaii that Lingle was asked by moderator Linda Taira about her position on the arrangements for gay couples with rights such as family and bereavement leaves, probate rights and hospital visitation.

“On the issue of domestic partnerships, I have stated that if the Legislature (should) pass legislation granting certain rights I would not veto that legislation,” Lingle said. Today, a very similar question is before her. Lingle says she plans a series of meetings with supporters and opponents. No one appears to be saying that the campaign words eight years ago are the end of the debate.

In its closing moments, the state House approved a bill 31-20 legalizing civil unions. It is now up to Lingle who has until July 6 to sign the bill, veto it or allow it to become law without her signature. Supporters and opponents are watching.

HI: Governor “Keeping Open Mind” on Civil Unions Bill

Monday, May 3rd, 2010

Supporters and opponents of the civil unions bill are eagerly awaiting Governor Lingle’s decision on whether to sign it. House Bill 444 was passed three days ago, but people on both sides of the hot-button issue say the battle isn’t over.

With hamburgers, chicken and other picnic staples, supporters of civil unions didn’t let a little rain on Sunday stop them from celebrating the bill’s passage. They simply moved their picnic from Kapiolani Park to the Local 5 union headquarters.

The measure provides gay couples the same rights and responsibilities as married couples in Hawaii.

HI: House Passes Civil Unions Bill, 31-20 – Will Gov Lingle Sign It?

Friday, April 30th, 2010

Lawmakers in the Hawaii state House of Representatives gave a highly controversial civil unions bill (H.B. 444) that had seemed dead in the water their final legislative approval on Thursday, voting 31-20 in favor of the measure.

The bill, which garnered some of the biggest protests Hawaii has ever seen, would grant gay and lesbian couples essentially the same rights, benefits and obligations that the state provides for married couples. The bill also recognizes same-sex unions that have been entered into in other states. As such, marriages from Massachusetts and Connecticut and all states that have approved equal marriage rights, will be recognized as civil unions in Hawaii should the bill be signed into law.

The Senate passed the bill in January, but with a few amendments meaning that it would have to return to the House. Fearing reprisals from the voting public come the November elections and knowing that Governor Linda Lingle, a Republican, was likely to veto the measure, House lawmakers chose not to take up the bill. Yet, on the final day of the legislative session on Thursday, Democratic House Majority Leader Blake Oshiro moved to reconsider the legislation.
