MD: Governor O’Malley Hints He Might Support Marriage Equality Plank for the Democratic Party

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2012

Maryland Marriage Equality and the Democratic PartyMaryland Gov. Martin O’Malley (D) said he may be open to supporting the campaign to include marriage equality in the Democrat’s 2012 party platform, but stopped short of fully endorsing the effort during a radio interview this afternoon.

“Perhaps, I haven’t given a whole lot of thought to that,” O’Malley said in a response to a question from SiriusXM’s Michelangelo Signorile, and stressed that the party must prioritize job creation “in order to get re-elected.”

The governor, a supporter of same-sex marriage, was at a loss for words, however, when asked what he would say to President Obama to help him evolve on marriage equality.

MD: Governor O’Malley’s Remarks on Marriage Equality Bill

Thursday, January 26th, 2012

Maryland Marriage Equality BillI want to thank all of you for being here this morning. There is a broad coalition. Many of its members are arrayed on the steps here with me. And they are all supportive of the bill that was introduced last night on civil marriage equality in the state of Maryland.

All of us want the same thing for our children. Marylanders of different religious beliefs, Marylanders of all walks of life all want the same things for our children. We want our children to live in loving, stable committed households that are protected equally under the law.

We also believe that we can protect religious freedom and rights equally under the law. Other states have found a way to do this. We can find a way to do this too. And that common ground that allows us to move forward is dignity, the human dignity of every single person.

MD: Governor O’Malley Expected to Introduce Marriage Equality Bill Monday

Sunday, January 22nd, 2012

Maryland Marriage Equality BillGov. Martin O’Malley is expected Monday to introduce most of his proposed legislation for this year’s General Assembly, but some Democrats are already criticizing the budget he submitted last week.

Among the bills the Democratic governor is expected to submit are one to establish offshore wind energy and another to legalize same-sex marriage, an O’Malley spokeswoman said.

However, the announcements will come as lawmakers continue to take deeper looks at the O’Malley budget, particularly leaders of the Democrat-controlled General Assembly who are talking about making additional cuts and dialing back some of the budget’s proposed tax increases.

MD: Governor O’Malley to Headline Marriage Equality Event

Thursday, September 1st, 2011

Maryland Gay MarriageEquality Maryland has an event slated for Wednesday in which several local elected officials will be honored including Gov. Martin O’Malley who said in July that getting a same-sex marriage law passed next year is among his legislative goals.

Dubbed “Celebrate and Honor,” it will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Chevy Chase Town Hall (4301 Willow Lane in Chevy Chase) with cocktails and presentations. Aside from O’Malley, Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown, Attorney General Doug Gansler, Comptroller Peter Franchot and Howard County Executive Ken Ulman will be honored.

Lisa Polyak, interim board chair for the organization, said the board decided whom to honor and was in agreement in its decisions. The organization has typically held a gala-type event but scaled back this year as it attempts to stabilize the organization after the departure of former director Morgan Meneses-Sheets, whom they fired in April after a disappointing 2011 legislative session that saw a marriage bill fail.

MD: O’Malley Discusses Support for Marriage Equality

Thursday, August 25th, 2011

Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley spoke this morning about the a marriage equality bill in his state which he intends to sponsor in the next legislative session. “I hope it passes. It should pass,” O’Malley told Mark Segraves on WTOP’s ‘Meet the Governor’ program.

Said O’Malley on the shift in his position from supporting civil unions to marriage equality:

“I had made a judgment…and thought that the place for consensus – the point at which that wave would crest, if you will – was around civil unions. I think we are past that point and I believe that the consensus that needs to be reached is on marital equality rights…And I intend to sponsor that legislation and make it part of our legislative agenda in the upcoming session.”

MD: Catholic Archbishop Tried to Talk Governor Out of Marriage Equality Support

Monday, August 8th, 2011

Two days before Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley (D) announced plans to sponsor a same-sex marriage bill, a Catholic archbishop strongly urged that he reconsider the move, suggesting the governor was acting out of “mere political expediency.”

Edwin F. O’Brien, the archbishop of Baltimore, said in a letter late last month that sponsoring the bill would “deeply conflict” with O’Malley’s Catholic faith and that he should resist pressure to do so after New York’s recent legalization of same-sex marriage.

New York Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo, another Democrat with a rising national profile, was widely credited with pushing a gay-marriage bill through a divided state legislature.

MD: Marriage Equality Advocates Ask Governor O’Malley to Step it Up

Monday, June 27th, 2011

With New York’s embrace of same-sex marriage last week, advocates of gay nuptials in Maryland are pressing Gov. Martin O’Malley to play a more vigorous role as state lawmakers prepare to push the issue again.

New York Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo, another Democrat whose national profile is on the rise, is widely credited with getting a bill through his divided legislature with a well-funded lobbying campaign to persuade conflicted lawmakers.

In Maryland, O’Malley supported a similar measure that fell short during this year’s legislative session but, unlike Cuomo, largely limited his advocacy to private conversations.

MD: Governor Will Fight for Transgender Protections

Wednesday, May 18th, 2011

Maryland Gender Identity BillIn the wake of the videotaped beating of a transgendered woman in a Rosedale McDonald’s over bathroom rights, Gov. Martin O’Malley is pledging to provide “even greater protections.” This comes just a few days after Baltimore County’s chief prosecutor charged a woman in the attack with a hate crime.

The Sun’s Julie Bykowicz reports:

Lawmakers who fought unsuccessfully this year for legislation to prohibit employment and housing discrimination against transgender people welcomed the support of the Democratic governor. State Sen. Richard S. Madaleno Jr., who plans to sponsor another transgender protection bill next in a future legislative session, said it “could be critical to the success of the legislation.”

MD: Governor Says He Would Sign Marriage Equality Bill

Thursday, August 12th, 2010

A federal judge’s ruling that overturned California’s Proposition 8 on Wednesday has prompted Marylanders to prepare for similar legal battles.

Gov. Martin O’Malley’s press office and his campaign said Monday that the governor would sign a same-sex marriage bill if one is passed by the Maryland General Assembly. This is the first time the governor office has said O’Malley would do so.

O’Malley’s likely Republican challenger, former Gov. Bob Ehrlich, has said he believes marriage should be between one man and one woman. Ehrlich said he would not sign such a bill.
