RI: Finally Time for Marriage Equality?

Thursday, November 11th, 2010

Rhode Island Gay MarriageFor the past 13 years, annual legislative efforts to pass a marriage equality bill in the General Assembly have met with opposition from Rhode Island’s heavily Roman Catholic population – and by the eight-year term of a governor opposed to gay marriage. Following the recent gubernatorial election of self-proclaimed gay-rights champion Lincoln Chafee ’75 P’14, the 2011 political stage is finally set for the passage of a same-sex marriage bill in Rhode Island.

Rhoda Perry P’91 – a Democratic member of the Rhode Island Senate and the sponsor of several failed marriage equality bills – said that after more than 10 years of advocacy, she plans to act quickly and decisively to collaborate with the new governor on the issue.

While Perry acknowledged that the positions of some of the newest members of the legislature remain somewhat unclear, she expressed confidence that Rhode Island would soon join its New England neighbors as a state that both recognizes and performs same-sex marriage.

HI: Civil Unions Supporter Wins Governorship

Wednesday, November 3rd, 2010

Neil AbercrombieGay-friendly former Rep. Neil Abercrombie has won Hawaii’s gubernatorial race over GOP candidate Lt. Gov. James “Duke” Aiona, who infamously rallied with the red-shirted Christianists during the battle for civil unions.

That fight was won in the state legislature, but outgoing (closet case) Gov. Linda Lingle sided with hate and vetoed the bill. While in Congress, Abercrombie earned a 100% rating from the Human Rights Campaign, meaning we now have a real advocate in governor’s seat in Hawaii.

Now we’ll have to see if Hawaii’s legislature is willing to go through that incredibly ugly battle one more time.

NY: Gay Marriage Friendly Candidate Cuomo Wins Governorship

Tuesday, November 2nd, 2010

Andrew CuomoAndrew Cuomo was elected governor of New York on Tuesday, a victory that brings to an end a long and nasty campaign that pitted the seasoned Democratic politician against a successful and brash Buffalo businessman with Tea Party backing. With 44-percent of the precincts reporting, Cuomo won 61-percent to 35 percent over Republican challenger Carl Paladino.

To a jubilant crowd, Cuomo thanked New Yorkers for sending him to the governor’s seat that was also once occupied by his father, but he made no mention during the victory speech of his opponent, Paladino.

Promising to clean up Albany, Cuomo said “the people have spoken and they’ve been loud and clear. It was my pleasure to listen… they want reform and they want government in Albany changed. The mandate tonight is to clean up Albany and to have elected officials that represent the people of this state and not the special interests.”

MD: Governor Who Would Sign Gay Marriage Bill Keeps His Seat

Tuesday, November 2nd, 2010

Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley, a Democrat, turned back a challenge from Republican Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. on Tuesday, but Republicans still appeared on track to achieve their 2010 goal of retaking a majority of the nation’s governorships.

Seeking a second four-year term, Mr. O’Malley led 51 percent to 47 percent and was declared the winner with 11 percent of the precincts reporting.

“I just don’t want to go back to where we were four years ago” with Mr. Ehrlich, said William Watson, 68, a veterinarian and Montgomery County resident who voted for Mr. O’Malley.

NY: Paladino Furious Over Gay Marriage Debate Question

Tuesday, October 19th, 2010

New York Gay MarriageAs last night’s gubernatorial debate was concluding one of the moderators decided to throw in one last question for the seven candidates — a controversial one that drew outrage from Republican gubernatorial candidate Carl Paladino’s campaign.

The question, “Do you support gay marriage?” was asked at 8:18 p.m. and due to time constraints the moderator stated that they wanted merely a “yes” or “no”"answer, imposing a five second limit on answers from the candidates, as opposed to the 60 – 90 seconds they each got on every other question.

Paladino, who was up first on that question began to explain his views on the issue, only to be interrupted and have a one word answer demanded of him. The flustered candidate, who has been under fire from gay rights activists over remarks made last weekend, responded that he opposed same sex marriages. Five of the other candidates, including Democratic Attorney General Andrew M. Cuomo answered yes; Freedom Party candidate Charles Barron said that his Party was yet to take a position on the issue.

NY: Paladino Used to Rent Space to Gay Clubs

Wednesday, October 13th, 2010

State liquor license records show that New York Republican gubernatorial candidate Carl Paladino had once collected rent from two gay clubs located in buildings he owned in downtown Buffalo, according to a published report.

The report in the Daily News on Wednesday comes just after Paladino told a group of Orthodox Jewish leaders that he opposed schools for what he called “brainwashing” of students into thinking that being gay is just another choice and “not the way God created us.”

The newspaper reported that a club named Cobalt operated as a gay bar in 2004 and most of 2005 and was run by Paladino’s son, William. It was housed in a building owned by one of Paladino’s many companies, Huron Group LLC, the newspaper said. The club was run under another corporate name.

NY: Teabagger Candidate for Governor: “I Oppose the Homosexual Agenda”

Monday, October 11th, 2010

On Sunday, Republican candidate for governor Carl Paladino met with orthodox Jewish leaders in Williamsburg, Brooklyn and made it clear he has serious issues when it comes to the gay community. “I just think my children and your children would be much better off and much more successful getting married and raising a family, and I don’t want them to be brainwashed into thinking that homosexuality is an equally valid and successful option. It isn’t,” said Paladino.

The remarks came right after Paladino said it was time to stop pandering to “pornographers and perverts.”

Paladino, whose nephew is gay, outlined his views on gay issues at two separate events with religious leaders, saying he would veto any legislation that granted gays the right to marry. “I oppose the homosexual agenda, whether they call it marriage, civil union or domestic partnership,” said the Republican candidate.

IL: GOP Candidate – No Civil Unions If I’m Elected

Wednesday, October 6th, 2010

Illinois Republican gubernatorial candidate Bill Brady (pictured) reiterated his opposition to civil unions for gay couples – something favored by his Democratic opponent – among other socially conservative stances in a wide-ranging interview Tuesday with theChicago Sun-Times editorial board.

“I’ve not found a reason to support civil unions,” he said. As a state senator, Brady proposed amending the Illinois constitution to ban same-sex marriage.

The Democratic candidate, incumbent governor Pat Quinn, supports civil unions and believes the state legislature could pass a civil unions bill before the end of the year. Quinn told the Arlington Heights Daily Herald there is a “need to encourage tolerance in the state.”
