Australia: Greens Want to Send Message in Parliament About Marriage Equality

Sunday, September 18th, 2011

Greens and Gay MarriageThe Tasmanian Greens are trying a new tactic to legalise same sex marriage by putting pressure on the Federal Government to act rather than risk another defeat in state parliament.

The Greens have tried and failed to gain support for their gay marriage bill in the past and leader, Nick McKim, says it is unlikely the legislation would pass if reintroduced.

Instead, he says his party will bring on a motion in Parliament this week to allow lower house members to express in-principle support for marriage equality and call on the Federal Government to amend the Marriage Act.

Australia: Greens, Labor at Odds Over Marriage Equality

Sunday, July 31st, 2011

In Brisbane last Wednesday, 25 middle-aged and elderly parents met the Attorney-General, Robert McClelland. They came from all over Queensland and were of various political persuasions. Their common bond was that all had a gay child and they wanted that child to have the right to marry.

Poignant stories were exchanged about the ostracising of gay people in the community and the mental health problems that can result. One 82-year-old gentleman lamented that his son had moved to Canada, where gay marriage is legal, and would not return to Australia because he felt like a second-class citizen here.

McClelland gave no commitment but responded with empathy, saying such stories would be important as debate on the topic grew.

Australia: Greens Leader Won’t Marry Partner When Marriage Equality Law Passes

Saturday, November 27th, 2010

Bob Brown and PartnerGREENS leader Bob Brown will not marry his partner if gay marriage is legalised in Australia – an event the party founder has predicted will occur in the Gillard government’s first term. In an interview with The Sun-Herald, Senator Brown reflected on the extraordinary political events of this year, including the elevation of his party to become the third force in Australian federal politics, leadership speculation within the party and the spectre of “the big end of town” mobilising against the Greens.

Senator Brown claimed ownership of the recent push to legalise same-sex marriage, but said he felt no duty to marry his long-time partner, farmer and activist Paul Thomas.

“We had our relationship registered under the Tasmanian laws … a couple of years back. No, I don’t see us having a future marriage ceremony because we are very content with things as they are,” he said.

Australia: Union Leader Says Labor Pandering to Greens on Gay Marriage

Thursday, November 18th, 2010

Influential union leader Joe De Bruyn has slammed Labor for “pandering” to the Greens on gay marriage and says supporting a law change will not yield more votes for the party. Mr De Bruyn is the head of the Shop Distributive and Allied Employees Association and sits on Labor’s national executive.

Yesterday, a Greens motion urging MPs to speak to the community about gay marriage was passed in the House of Representatives with the support of Labor.

The motion’s passing came after increasing tensions within Labor over the issue, with some MPs publicly challenging the party’s refusal to support gay marriage.

Australia: Greens to Introduce Gay Mrriage Bill in Tasmania This Week

Monday, November 8th, 2010

Australia Gay MarriageA HOBART couple says legalising same-sex marriage would help gay couples feel more included in Australian society.  A Bill to legalise same-sex marriages will be introduced into State Parliament this week.

It will be Greens leader Nick McKim’s third attempt to get the Bill passed.

Molesworth couple Tracey Wing, 43, and Sielito, 47, say though they won’t rush to the altar if the Bill is passed, they will think seriously about tying the knot.  While gay couples in Tasmania can formalise their union through a state civil partnership known as a Deed of Relationship, Tracey and Sielito have not done so.

Australia: Greens Promise Gay Marriage Bill in Victoria if Elected

Monday, November 8th, 2010

Australia Gay MarriageTHE Victorian Parliament could have a debate on same-sex marriage, with the Greens candidate in a strong position to snatch the seat of Melbourne pledging to introduce a private member’s bill on what has become a hot issue.

Brian Walters told The Age that he would introduce a private member’s bill to allow same-sex marriage if he wins Education Minister Bronwyn Pike’s seat at the November 27 state election.

With a hung parliament a real possibility, the Greens could be in a good position to negotiate for a conscience vote. But such a vote could only happen with the consent of the party leaders and the party room. Both Premier John Brumby and Opposition Leader Ted Baillieu have indicated they are opposed to same-sex marriage.

Thursday, October 21st, 2010

Australia Gay MarriagePrime Minister Julia Gillard is facing a new push for a conscience vote on same-sex marriage, with community groups spurred on by a poll that shows 78 per cent support for the move. The Galaxy poll for two gay rights groups also found rising support for marriage equality, with 62 per cent of Australians backing reform, up from 60 per cent last year.

Australia: Greens Introducing Gay Marriage Legislation into Senate

Tuesday, September 28th, 2010

THE Greens have wasted no time flexing their new parliamentary muscles, with senator Sarah Hanson-Young set to introduce same-sex marriage legislation into the upper house later today.

The move comes as the House of Representatives prepares to debate and adopt new standing orders that will establish a new committee to scrutinise legislation before it enters the house and rule on whether it is controversial.

The new bills committee is part of the suite of parliamentary reforms that all sides of politics agreed to earlier this month – at least initially. But Senator Hanson-Young will not wait to have the same-sex legislation introduced into the house, saying she was fulfilling an election promise by introducing the same-sex marriage bill.
