Australia: Greens Plan to Introduce Marriage Equality Bill on First Day of Parliament

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

Despite not sealing a deal with the Labor Party over a conscience vote on gay marriage, the Greens have vowed to push ahead, announcing they will introduce legislation on the first day of the new Parliament.

Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young today reassured people that the Greens’ commitment to marriage equality was “rock-solid”, and said she would re-introduce a new Marriage Equality Bill on the first day of Parliament and push for a conscience vote.

“The fact that an agreement could not be reached with the Labor Party on equal marriage and other Greens policy priorities does not preclude the Greens from continuing to promote these issues,” Senator Hanson-Young said.

Thursday, August 26th, 2010

A historic win for the Greens in the seat of Melbourne has left many in the gay and lesbian community cheering a campaign fought over gay marriage. At a press conference on Monday new Melbourne MP Adam Bandt said he was proud to be the first Greens member elected to the House of Representatives.

“We campaigned on some positive values of sustainability, compassion and equality, and what Melbourne has said is those values are mainstream values and we want the whole country to hear them,” he said.

“I’m pleased to be here today representing those values.”

Ireland: Green Party Wants Marriage Equality

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

GAY MARRIAGE is a goal of the Green Party, Minister for the Environment John Gormley told an event in Dublin to mark the passing of the civil partnership legislation.

Mr Gormley said he knew some people were “deeply concerned” the new law did not deal with the rights of children of same-sex parents, adding that additional rights “must” be achieved.

“We take pride in what we have all achieved today, conscious of the fact that tomorrow we continue the fight towards the final goal of full marriage equality,” Mr Gormley said.

UK: Green Party Promises to Enact Gay Marriage

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

The Green Party unveiled its general election manifesto today, which promises no fewer than 14 measures for gay and transgender equality. At present, the party has no MPs, although leader Caroline Lucas MEP, standing for Brighton Pavilion, is its best hope of representation in parliament.

Keeping up the theme of “fairness”, as espoused by Labour and the Lib Dems’ manifestos, the document is titled ‘Fair is worth fighting for’. The most notable LGBT policies are opening up civil partnerships and marriages to straight and gay couples and ending the gay blood donation ban.

Other policies include amending the Equality Act to protect LGBT people from harassment, removing equality law exemptions for faith schools and refusing visas and work permits to singers who condone homophobia.

Australia: Greens Say No Horse Trading for Gay Marriage

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young has told Sydney Star Observer her party would not be prepared to compromise on another issue to see same-sex marriage legalised in Australia – even if they gained an outright balance of power at the next election.

“We’re not into horse trading … between one issue versus another. That’s not how the Parliament works,” Hanson-Young said in an interview last fortnight. “That’s not how you deliver good policy outcomes.”

Hanson-Young confirmed that view in a subsequent interview last week. “Our support for marriage equality is not in doubt, however, it would be irresponsible to hold the Senate to ransom on another issue in order to secure support for our policy. The Greens are a party that represents all Australians – it would be irresponsible to sell out one constituency to curry favour from another.”

Saturday, March 6th, 2010

The Green Party has launched its LGBT Manifesto for the upcoming general election, PinkPaper.com can report. The launch took place in Brighton, with keynote speakers Caroline Lucas Green MEP, and human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell. The Greens claim they are offering “the strongest, most comprehensive and radical LGBT equality policies of any party.” These are six core policies in the Greens LGBT General Election Manifesto:

(1) Open up civil marriages and civil partnerships, without discrimination, to both same-sex and opposite sex couples.

(2) Require all police forces to have LGBT Liaison Officers with paid time allocated within their work schedules to tackle homophobic and transphobic hate crime.

(3) End the blanket, lifetime ban on gay and bisexual blood donors.
