Australia: Union Leader Says Labor Pandering to Greens on Gay Marriage

Thursday, November 18th, 2010

Influential union leader Joe De Bruyn has slammed Labor for “pandering” to the Greens on gay marriage and says supporting a law change will not yield more votes for the party. Mr De Bruyn is the head of the Shop Distributive and Allied Employees Association and sits on Labor’s national executive.

Yesterday, a Greens motion urging MPs to speak to the community about gay marriage was passed in the House of Representatives with the support of Labor.

The motion’s passing came after increasing tensions within Labor over the issue, with some MPs publicly challenging the party’s refusal to support gay marriage.

Australia: Parliament Begins Gay Marriage Debate

Monday, November 15th, 2010

Australia Gay MarriageTo be sure, this is just one step on a long road, but Monday 15 November will at least be remembered as the day the Australian Commonwealth Parliament decided to grow up about gay marriage.

Melbourne’s Green MP Adam Bandt introduced a motion today calling on all parliamentarians to gauge their constituents’ views on the marriage equality issue (ahead of introducing a draft law on the bill).

It is a small step because only a small minority of MPs said anything brave, interesting or new… but it is lot better than the minor Greens or Democrat parties simply talking to a brick wall.

Australia: Greens Ready Gay Marriage Legislation in South Australia, Too

Wednesday, November 10th, 2010

Australia Gay MarriageThe Advocate reports that a coalition of Green and Labor Party legislators are readying a marriage equality bill for the state of South Australia.

Tammy Franks of the Green Party and the Labor Party’s Ian Hunter will formally announce their plan to the state parliament. A similar bill was recently introduced in Tasmania, and one is waiting in the wings in Victoria.

Hunter said in a statement, that while it will be more difficult to pass nationwide legislation to legalize marriage equality regional bills could be effective.

Australia: Greens to Introduce Gay Mrriage Bill in Tasmania This Week

Monday, November 8th, 2010

Australia Gay MarriageA HOBART couple says legalising same-sex marriage would help gay couples feel more included in Australian society.  A Bill to legalise same-sex marriages will be introduced into State Parliament this week.

It will be Greens leader Nick McKim’s third attempt to get the Bill passed.

Molesworth couple Tracey Wing, 43, and Sielito, 47, say though they won’t rush to the altar if the Bill is passed, they will think seriously about tying the knot.  While gay couples in Tasmania can formalise their union through a state civil partnership known as a Deed of Relationship, Tracey and Sielito have not done so.

Australia: Greens Promise Gay Marriage Bill in Victoria if Elected

Monday, November 8th, 2010

Australia Gay MarriageTHE Victorian Parliament could have a debate on same-sex marriage, with the Greens candidate in a strong position to snatch the seat of Melbourne pledging to introduce a private member’s bill on what has become a hot issue.

Brian Walters told The Age that he would introduce a private member’s bill to allow same-sex marriage if he wins Education Minister Bronwyn Pike’s seat at the November 27 state election.

With a hung parliament a real possibility, the Greens could be in a good position to negotiate for a conscience vote. But such a vote could only happen with the consent of the party leaders and the party room. Both Premier John Brumby and Opposition Leader Ted Baillieu have indicated they are opposed to same-sex marriage.

Australia: Greens Plan to Introduce Marriage Equality Bill on First Day of Parliament

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

Despite not sealing a deal with the Labor Party over a conscience vote on gay marriage, the Greens have vowed to push ahead, announcing they will introduce legislation on the first day of the new Parliament.

Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young today reassured people that the Greens’ commitment to marriage equality was “rock-solid”, and said she would re-introduce a new Marriage Equality Bill on the first day of Parliament and push for a conscience vote.

“The fact that an agreement could not be reached with the Labor Party on equal marriage and other Greens policy priorities does not preclude the Greens from continuing to promote these issues,” Senator Hanson-Young said.

Australia: Greens/ALP Form Coalition Government; Gay Marriage Vote Dumped

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

THE Greens have secured modest political wins from Julia Gillard in exchange for their support. But gay marriage and refugee policy are absent from the historic agreement.

Unveiling the deal clinching the support of Greens MP Adam Bandt in the lower house yesterday, Greens leader Bob Brown said it was unfair to describe the gains as small. He said they were significant and more could be done if Labor formed government.

When parliament is sitting, the Prime Minister will meet Senator Brown and Mr Bandt each week to work on the legislative agenda. The deal does not include a cabinet position for a Green, nor would there be a conscience vote on gay marriage as the two parties could not reach agreement on the issue.

Australia: Could Hung Parliament Lead to Marriage Equality?

Sunday, August 22nd, 2010

With the verdict of Saturday’s election still unlikely to be known for a number of days, the Australian Marriage Equality organization has welcomed the minority government result, indicating that it may move Australia closer to legalizing same-sex marriage.

Alex Greenwich, spokesperson for Australian Marriage Equality said that the balance of power that will be held by the Greens in the Senate as well as three independents in the House of Representatives indicates that the chance for reform on the issue has significantly increased.

“If a major party can be persuaded by the Greens and/or independents to have a conscience vote, it’s game on,” Mr Greenwich said. “The 2010 election campaign saw the issue of marriage equality move to the centre of the political stage, and now the result has seen achieving marriage equality move into the realms of real possibility.”
