Send a Letter to Hawaiian Governor Linda Lingle

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

Hawaiian activists are asking for your help in a snail mail campaign to convince Gov. Linda Lingle not to veto the state’s pending civil unions bill. Lingle has deluged with letters from our enemies, so let’s send her some positive messages of our own.

Two suggested lines for your letter: “We are from _____ and we would sure love to have our civil union in Hawaii,” and “We recently got a civil union in _____ but would much rather have had it in Hawaii.”

Letters should be mailed to:
The Honorable Linda Lingle
Governor, State of Hawaii
Executive Chambers
State Capitol
Honolulu, Hawaii 96813

You’ll need to send your message this week for it to arrive on time.

HI: Five Major Businesses Announce Support for Civil Unions Bill

Saturday, June 19th, 2010

Five Hawaii businesses are announcing their support for a civil unions measure pending before Gov. Linda Lingle. The Washington-based Human Rights Campaign said Thursday that the businesses wanted to distance themselves from a letter sent by Hawaii Business Roundtable to Lingle on June 4. The letter urged her to veto the bill.

The businesses are Time Warner Cable Inc., Marriott International Inc., Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide Inc., Marsh & McLennan Companies Inc. and Aon Corp.

The businesses said in the Human Rights Campaign statement they oppose discrimination against same-sex couples, and that the decisions of Hawaii Business Roundtable don’t always reflect the positions of its members.

HI: Governor Lingle Met With Anti Gay Group Privately While Civil Unions Bill Awaits Action

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

The governor wants to hear from both sides before she makes a decision on civil unions – and she held the first of two private meetings on Monday. She’s talking to people both for and against the measure that would extend the same rights as marriage to same-sex couples.

About 30 opponents of the measure attended a two-hour long private session in the governor’s office. “House Bill 444 is not about civil rights but about creating special rights,” said civil unions opponent Garrett Hashimoto.

Religious leaders and several youth were among the group. “For example, what comes next, same sex marriage? what comes next, homosexuality being taught in the schools?,” asked Ryan Mc Donald, civil union opponent.

HI: Governor Lingle: Civil Unions are Same Sex Marriage

Sunday, May 16th, 2010

Gov. Linda Lingle said yesterday that she has not made up her mind on civil unions but described the bill passed by the state Legislature as the equivalent of same-sex marriage. Her description is identical to complaints from religious conservatives who oppose civil unions and to a resolution approved yesterday by state Republicans who want her to veto the bill.

“It does appear to me on reading it, that it really is same-sex marriage, but by a different name,” Lingle told reporters during a break at the state GOP convention at the Hilton Hawaiian Village in Waikiki. “But I want to wait and hear people out.”

Lingle has said in the past that she would consider some form of domestic partnership legislation but she has opposed same-sex marriage.

HI: Governor “Keeping Open Mind” on Civil Unions Bill

Monday, May 3rd, 2010

Supporters and opponents of the civil unions bill are eagerly awaiting Governor Lingle’s decision on whether to sign it. House Bill 444 was passed three days ago, but people on both sides of the hot-button issue say the battle isn’t over.

With hamburgers, chicken and other picnic staples, supporters of civil unions didn’t let a little rain on Sunday stop them from celebrating the bill’s passage. They simply moved their picnic from Kapiolani Park to the Local 5 union headquarters.

The measure provides gay couples the same rights and responsibilities as married couples in Hawaii.

HI: Advocates Push for Civil Unions Bill Vote

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

Gay rights activists are trying to give state lawmakers political cover by showing that prominent people in the community support civil unions. Activists are circulating a photo booklet of hundreds of people who back civil unions – from former Gov. Ben Cayetano to former Miss Universe Brook Lee – to demonstrate mainstream desire for equal rights.

The photo booklet, along with newspaper advertisements and a separate collection of portraits of same-sex couples and their families, is part of a strategy to help convince lawmakers in the state House to force a vote on civil unions before the state Legislature adjourns on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Bishop Larry Silva, of the Roman Catholic Church in Hawai’i, sent lawmakers a message yesterday thanking them for not passing civil unions this session.
