ID: Anti Marriage Equality Group Holds Rally in Nampa

Sunday, March 18th, 2012

Idaho Anti Marriage Equality RallyPro-marriage supporters rallied in downtown Nampa, asking for drivers to honk, if they think marriage should only be between a man and woman.

Social Worker Margaret Rolen said the reason she is against gay relationships is for the future generation. “Children do better in a stable family of mom and dad,” she said.

Keith Phillips, the executive director of Boise Pride, a diversity group, says that ideology doesn’t make sense to him. “There are plenty of examples of children in a mother – father situation, who don’t have good parents,” he said.

ID: State’s Only Gay Legislator Will Leave to Fight for Gay Rights

Friday, March 2nd, 2012

Idaho Gay RightsLawmakers next door in Washington State just voted to legalize same-sex marriage. Here, they will not allow a bill to be formally filed that would protect gay people from basic forms of discrimination in areas like education, employment, public services and real estate transactions.

Next door, the lawmaker who leads the Senate’s most powerful committee, Ways and Means, is the same one who led the gay marriage bill to passage. The lawmaker, Senator Ed Murray of Seattle, is gay. In the final floor debate, he invited all of his colleagues to his wedding.

Here, the lawmaker who has spent eight years working for what might seem far less controversial goals is the only openly gay member of the Idaho Legislature. Now with the session well under way and a gay rights bill again showing little sign of getting a hearing, the senator who has been its champion, Nicole LeFavour, plans to become the former only openly gay lawmaker in the Idaho Legislature.

ID: Gay Activists Still Fighting for Rights

Sunday, February 26th, 2012

Idaho Gay RightsAfter what many local activists called a heartbreaking loss in Idaho, the Twin Falls Times-News reports that fight will go on even after the Senate State Affairs Committee nixed legislation that would’ve added LGBT protections to the Idaho Human Rights Act.

“I was honestly heartbroken at first, and then i slowly moved to being quite angry, and now I’m kind of just determined to keep fighting for the rest of the legislative session,” Cody Hafer, a statewide coordinator of the Add the Words campaign, told the Times-News’s Natalie Dicou.

The paper reports that activists have pledged to fight to add the words “sexual orientation” and “gender identity” to the state’s rights act until either a bill is printed or the legislative session ends. Lesbian state Senator Nicole LeFavour, a Democrat from Boise, tried earlier this month to add the words as an amendment to an unrelated bill, but that too failed to pass muster in the increasingly conservative state senate.

ID: Senate Kills Gay Rights Bill

Friday, February 10th, 2012

This morning the Idaho Senate State Affairs Committee voted 7-2 to reject a bill that would have added non-discrimination protections based on sexual orientation and gender identity to the Idaho Human Rights Act.

Activists had called on legislators to “Add The Words,” but they voted to not even print the bill, which meant there was no opportunity to hear testimony. Because there was not even any debate, the bill died without any spoken support except from its sponsor.

ID: Lawmaker Blocks Gay Rights Bill

Tuesday, February 15th, 2011

Nampa GOP Sen. Curt McKenzie will not schedule a committee hearing for Idaho’s perennial gay rights legislation, essentially killing the measure that has failed to get out of committee the last four years.

The bill does not have the votes on the Senate State Affairs Committee to pass through that panel to the full Senate, McKenzie said Monday. McKenzie serves as the committee’s chairman.

“In the past as a courtesy I’ve printed the bill, but I haven’t seen the votes on the committee to send it to the floor, and I don’t think they are there this year, either,” McKenzie said. “The committee has not shifted enough philosophically. You could say it’s gotten more conservative because Sen. (Chuck) Winder (R- Boise) is there instead of Sen. (Joe) Stegner (R-Lewiston).”

ID: Legislators Consider Adding Sexual Orientation to Protected Classes

Wednesday, January 26th, 2011

Idaho Capitol BuildingLegislators will again look at adding sexual orientation and gender identity to classes protected under the state’s anti-discrimination law.

Senate Minority Leader Edgar Malapeai, D-Pocatello, has put forward a bill that would make it illegal to fire (or refuse to hire) someone, or deny someone housing, because he or she is gay. A similar bill was introduced in 2008, but it died in committee.

Malapeai said it’s simply the right thing to do to add sexual orientation and gender identity to the state Human Rights Act, which already covers creed, color, sex, and national origin. The senator said that as things are people who feel they have been fired from a job because they are gay have no recourse.

ID: GOP Platform Would Exclude Transgender People From Marriage

Saturday, June 26th, 2010

Idaho doesn’t recognize gay or lesbian marriage, but some Republicans want the state to go a step further. A panel of GOP delegates at the state party’s convention passed a measure Friday to define marriage as a bond between a “naturally born” man and woman, effectively barring transgenders.

Bannock County delegate Ralph Lilling says his amendment to the state party’s platform will help further protect the traditional family unit. But Donna Montgomery, a delegate from Kootenai County, argued that the additional language was unnecessary because people from Idaho understand man is a man and a woman is a woman.

The measure still has to go before the full convention for approval.

Kenya: Gay Community Demands Recognition

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

Scores of Kenya homosexuals celebrated the International Day Against Homophobia in style Monday and demanded for more recognition. The Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender and Intersex (LGBIT) persons wined, sung and danced and for the first time allowed media coverage of their function to fight stigma and victimisation associated with their sexual orientation.

“Ten years ago there was no public place that could have hosted such a function,” Kenya Human Rights Commission director Muthoni Wanyeki, whose lobby organised the event at the National Museums of Kenya, said. “Although the Committee of Experts did not allow same sex marriage in Kenya. The Proposed Constitution would enable all Kenyans access health and are free from discrimination and violence. The basic rights are for all Kenyans including people from the gay community.”

Ms Wanyeki, however, said despite the government allowing the gay community to meet the battle against harassment of and violence against sexual minorities is still on.
