Ireland: Supreme Court Deals Setback to Marriage Equality Advocates

Sunday, October 23rd, 2011

The fight for marriage equality in Ireland suffered a minor setback yesterday when the Supreme Court ruled against Senator Katherine Zappone and Dr Ann Louise Gilligan on a technical point.

Sen Zappone and Dr Gilligan are currently appealing to the Supreme Court to have their Canadian marriage recognised in Ireland, having lost their case in the High Court in 2006.

At issue yesterday was a request by the couple’s legal team to challenge an Irish law prohibiting same-sex marriage.

Ireland: Marriage Equality Launches New Campaign

Tuesday, October 4th, 2011

Ireland Gay Marriage CampaignToday Marriage Equality launches its Just Love? campaign with a ground-breaking report, Missing Pieces, which reveals 169 legal differences between civil marriage and civil partnership.

Described as “an abdication of legislative responsibility”, the report rebuts claims that civil partnership provides same-sex couples with equality in all but name. The Foreword to the Report states neatly that “through civil partnership the Irish State has created a separate and unequal institution on many levels. Most profoundly the relationship between children and their gay and lesbian parents is not part of the civil partnership package”.

Separately, RTE reported last night that the Department of Foreign Affairs have no plans to alter passport application forms to reflect the growing number of same-sex couples parenting children. Such steps have recently been taken in the UK.

Ireland: Great New PSA for Marriage Equality

Saturday, September 10th, 2011

It seems the best LGBT PSAs these days are coming out of Ireland (remember this excellent clip against bullying?). Here’s a new, very powerful spot about how civil partnerships lack the rights given to those who are married.

Ireland: Thousands March for Marriage Equality

Sunday, August 14th, 2011

Ireland Gay Marriage MarchSUPPORTERS OF civil partnership equality have accused the Government of contributing to bullying in schools by not giving the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community equal rights to everyone else.

Thousands of people took to the streets of Dublin yesterday to demand civil marriage equality. Holding banners with slogans such as “marriage is magic”, “I want for my sister what I have for myself – equality”, and “73% support gay marriage”, an estimated 4,000 people marched to the Department of Justice on St Stephen’s Green where a rally was held.

Organiser Max Krzyzanowski urged the Government to listen to the repeated calls highlighting the inequalities of civil partnership legislation and demonstrate its commitment to equality for all by lifting the ban on same-sex marriage.

Ireland: Thousands to March for Marriage Equality

Sunday, August 14th, 2011

Ireland Civil PartnershipsTHOUSANDS OF PEOPLE are expected to take to the streets of Dublin today for the third annual March for Marriage, organised by LGBT Noise.

The aim of the march is to urge the government to listen to calls highlighting the inequalities of civil partnership legislation, and to lift the ban on same-sex marriage.

Organiser Max Krzyzanowski told TheJournal.ie that while the majority of people in Ireland appear to be in favour of gay marriage (a Sunday Times/Red C poll in March found that almost three quarters of Irish people are in favour), it’s “only the politicians that are holding us back”.

Ireland: Thousands to March for Marriage Equality Saturday

Wednesday, August 10th, 2011

Thousands will take to the streets of Dublin this Sunday, August 14, to march for marriage equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in Ireland.

The protestors, led by the LGBT Noise organization, claim that even though civil partnerships between same-sex couples were legally recognized from January 1 of this year, the legislation is still missing vital components that differentiate it from marriage.

Max Krzyzanowski, spokesman for the group, said the “denial” of civil marriage equality in Ireland was a human rights issue. “The Civil Partnership Act 2011 has only served to cement inequality in Irish society by explicitly excluding LGBT people from the institution of marriage,” he said.

Ireland: Proposed Amendment Would Offer Equal Citizenship Rights to Same Sex Couples

Thursday, July 21st, 2011

Just got this from Marriage Equality Ireland:

Marriage Equality today welcomed an amendment to the Civil Law (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2011 that provides for equal treatment of civil partners and married couples in legislation on acquiring Irish citizenship.

Moninne Griffith, Director of Marriage Equality, said “This amendment comes after intensive research as part of our forthcoming Marriage Audit, due to be published in mid-September. At present we estimate there are over 140 differences between marriage and Civil Partnership – many of which deal with children and families. We are delighted that progress is being made on important equality issues, although there is much work left to be done. Ireland can either achieve equality step by step by dealing with each discrepancy separately, or the Government could do the right thing, and introduce equality in one fell swoop by legislating for marriage for same-sex couples.”

The amendment was proposed by Senator Katherine Zappone, and adds to the rights and entitlements currently given to same sex couples under the Civil Partnership legislation. Senator Zappone had been briefed on the issue by Marriage Equality, following intensive research into the discrepancies between Civil Partnership legislation and marriage law.

“We would like to thank Senator Zappone for her work to progress this important issue, and look forward to working with her in the future” said Ms Griffith. “We would also like to thank the Immigrant Council of Ireland and Patrick Dillon Malone BL for lending their expertise and opinions to the research.”

Ireland: Concern Over New Transgender Protection Laws

Friday, July 15th, 2011

Irish proposals designed to give transgender people more rights will break up happy families, trans campaigners say.

The plans say that trans people who married in their old gender will have to divorce or legally separate in order to be recognised in their new gender, regardless of whether they remain in a loving relationship with their partner.

Ireland does not currently give legal recognition to people who change sex. Yesterday, minister for social protection Joan Burton launched a report by the Gender Recognition Advisory Group as a precursor to legislation which will be introduced next year.
