Young Conservatives: We Care About Jobs, Not Marriage Equality

Monday, February 13th, 2012

The GOP presidential candidates have all addressed it passionately, hoping to appeal to the conservative base, but the issue of gay marriage ranks low on the list of priorities for young voters at the Conservative Political Action Conference.

“We’re worried about getting jobs after graduation,” says Lindsay Matera, a freshman at Roger Williams University. “Gay marriage isn’t as important of an issue for me.”

Nick Moon looks to Mitt Romney as the man with the economic credentials to turn the country around and criticizes peers who argue that Romney’s not conservative enough on social issues.

NH: Marriage Equality Group Asks Legislature “Where Are the Jobs?”

Friday, October 28th, 2011

New Hampshire Gay Marriage RepealA New Hampshire pro-marriage equality group is calling on social conservative lawmakers to halt their attempts to repeal a marriage equality bill passed by the state legislature in 2009, the Associated Press reports.

The bipartisan group, Standing Up for New Hampshire Families, includes the support of former state Supreme Court Chief Justice John Broderick, who said in a Thursday statement, “It would be tragic to turn back the clock to the dark days of discrimination, intolerance, and false stereotypes.”

NC: GOP Claims Marriage Equality Ban Will Create Jobs

Thursday, October 27th, 2011

North Carolina Gay Marriage FightRepublicans took over the General Assembly 100 days ago, running on a platform of “jobs, jobs, jobs” for the most part. So how have they done?

One of the four most controversial actions includes the most recent. They want you and me to vote on a Marriage Amendment to the State Constitution that would ban gay marriage. One of our facebook friends Christy Kantor had this to say, “Why are they wasting precious time and money on an amendment to ban gay marriage when it is already illegal in our state? Our economy and employment should be their top priority!”

Ok. So what about one of the centerpieces of the session? That Constitutional Marriage Amendment you and I will vote on in May. “The best situation the social scientist tells us is for a man and woman to bring up children, and that’s important for the economy as well as the children,” said Stam. I asked, “How does that help the economy?” “All the studies show that children brought up in that circumstances are better off financially, they are better off emotionally, they are better off academically, and this is important to the long run status of the economy.”

From Same-Sex Marriage To Abortion- GOP Proving That They Aren’t Interested In Jobs

Monday, May 9th, 2011

The headlines speak for themselves. “Don’t put bigotry up for a vote.” “Amendment is just a red herring.” “Beware of casting political ideas in stone.” “Gay marriage is about clashing cultures.” “The GOP is wasting time on marriage amendment.” “Betting on bigotry may backfire this time.” And so forth. In fact, the editorial headlines are probably causing conniptions in the headquarters of the National Organization for Marriage. Well, that and the fact that their own little poll has been shown to be nothing more than a fraud written by a biased pollster.

In fact, it goes well beyond that. According to one source, there is not a single newspaper in Minnesota which has decided to support the GOP in their attempts to enshrine bigotry in the state’s constitution. In fact, many of them are upset over the waste of time and money that is going into the effort. People want jobs is the message, and what they are getting is the culture war.

In fact, that is what is going on everywhere. The GOP are fighting the culture war while people are being turned out onto the streets because they can’t pay their mortgages.

IA: Economy Trumps Gay Marriage As Campaign Issue

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

When Iowa became the first Midwestern state to legalize same-sex marriage a year ago, opponents said the issue would drive future political races, and some even pledged to work to remove the State Supreme Court justices behind the decision.

With Iowans going to polls on Tuesday, same-sex marriage has been a matter of debate among the Republican candidates for governor, but the issue appears to have been overtaken by voters’ worries about jobs, the economy and the state’s budget misery.

“Too many other things are upsetting people,” said David A. Yepsen, director of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute at Southern Illinois University and a former political reporter for The Des Moines Register.
