Australia: Gillard Hosts Dinner for Gay Couples, Says Marriage Equality is Inevitable

Tuesday, February 21st, 2012

Australia Marriage Equality DinnerPRIME Minister Julia Gillard has told three same-sex couples she believes laws allowing them to marry in Australia are inevitable. Ms Gillard and partner Tim Mathieson hosted the couples at The Lodge last night. She told them the growing number of countries legislating in favour of the issue is placing increasing pressure on politicians to support reform.

Sydney brothers Matthew Miller, 12, and Dylan Miller, 9, escorted their mothers, Sandy Miller and Louise Bucke, to the Lodge to provide their argument for legalising same-sex marriage.

Ms Miller and Ms Burke have been a couple for four years and engaged for two and their eldest child said he was tired of waiting for the day he could watch them formally tie the knot.

Boy George Speaks Out Against Austraila PM on Marriage Equality

Sunday, December 11th, 2011

Boy George and Australia Marriage Equality“I’m baffled by it,” George said. “If they just let it happen they’d realise it’s not the end of civilisation as we know it. “On one hand they mention family values and the importance of relationships but if people want to get married isn’t that a good thing?

“It’s so unimportant. I don’t think it’s the job of a PM or a politician to deal with that. Gay people have been around since the dinosaurs.

“I just don’t get homophobia. And not allowing gay marriage is homophobia. What difference does it make to you? It’s not a choice. ‘Oh I think I’ll be gay’.”

Australia: How Gillard Snatched Defeat From the Jaws of Marriage Equality Victory

Thursday, December 8th, 2011

Australia Marriage EqualityRecently, Australia’s ruling Labor Party has been fighting off an attempt to legalize same-sex marriage. The problem was that rank-and-file members, and most voters, support marriage equality, while left-wing Prime Minister Julia Gillard does not. She is quite adamant in her opposition.

She claims that she is protecting “traditional” marriage, but she lives with a man herself, outside marriage. Gillard’s rabid anti-gay position has a lot of Labor supporters scratching their heads.

Gillard has a problem. At the recent Labor Party conference, prominent members pushed marriage equality as a plank for the party. This would require Labor MPs to vote for equality legislation that their own party leader opposes.

Australia: Platform Change on Marriage Equality Likely, Actual Change Unlikely

Friday, December 2nd, 2011

Australia Marriage Equality VoteTHE Labor Party’s national conference will today reject Julia Gillard’s position on marriage equality by amending its platform to support same-sex marriage.

But factional leaders were last night working to rescue the Prime Minister from the indignity of having to implement a policy she opposes by moving to grant MPs a conscience vote on the issue, virtually guaranteeing that any legislation allowing same-sex marriage would be defeated in parliament.

As negotiations continued last night, the Coalition ridiculed Labor’s fascination with marriage equality, insisting that most Australians were more interested in the cost of living – a thought echoed by Labor sources angry that the conference was not focused on issues of broader concern.

Australia: Gillard Attacked From Both Sides of Labor Party on Marriage Equality

Wednesday, November 30th, 2011

Julia Gillard and Marriage EqualityTHE Labor Party’s two most prominent gay politicians – one from the Right and one from the Left – will spearhead the push for marriage equality, as Julia Gillard struggles to maintain her authority on the issue.

ACT Deputy Chief Minister Andrew Barr, from the Right, will move and federal Finance Minister Penny Wong, from the Left, will second a ”Rainbow Labor” motion at this weekend’s ALP conference declaring that Labor ”will amend the Marriage Act to ensure equal access to marriage under statute for all couples irrespective of sex”.

A platform change to endorse gay marriage would be embarrassing for the Prime Minister, who has repeatedly said that marriage should be between a man and a woman.

Australian PM Refuses to Have Charity Dinner With Gay Couples

Saturday, November 26th, 2011

Julia Gillard Refuses Dinner With Gay CouplesAustralia’s Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, doesn’t like the idea of gay marriage. Nor is she very fond of awkward dinners.

Too bad for her. In June, the liberal Australian advocacy group GetUp! won an “intimate dinner” with Ms. Gillard at a charity auction. Their bid: $31,000, AUS. Their plan: Send same-sex couples to sup with Ms. Gillard and talk about marriage equality. The result: Ms. Gillard has so far refused to set a date for their meeting.

What Australia’s Conscience Vote Really Means

Tuesday, November 22nd, 2011

Australia Gay Marriage Conscience VoteAlthough the federal government does not recognize same-sex marriage in the United States, such marriages are recognized by some individual states. There are 6 states that grant marriage licenses to same-sex couples: Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Vermont. Maryland recognizes same-sex marriages but does not grant marriage licenses to same-sex couples. Despite this apparent progress, the legalization of same-sex marriage in the US has been driven by court rulings and legislative action, rather than voter referendums[1]. However, public support in recent years for its legalization has grown considerably in the US. Several recent polls have shown support for legalized same-sex marriage above 50%, but the issue remains politically divisive.

In my home country of Australia, a recent Age/Nielsen poll of 1400 taken earlier this month shows a growing majority of Australians favour legalising same-sex marriage. Sixty-two percent of voters would like to see gay marriage legalised, a rise from 57% a year ago, while only 31% are opposed, compared with 37% in November 2010. The poll shows there is majority support in every mainland state, with support greater among women than men (71-53%)[2].

Prime Minister Julia Gillard recently announced a conscience vote for Labor MPs on gay marriage at next month’s party conference. Given the personal nature of the issue and the deeply held beliefs, a conscience vote for MPs (Members of Parliament) is appropriate, Ms. Gillard says, so they can decide “according to their own values and beliefs.” In response, the Australian Rainbow Labor Network said a conscience vote was not the answer. “Matters of equality should not be the subject of a conscience vote,” spokesman Andrew Barr said.

Australia: Gillard’s Compromise Unlikely to Please Either Side

Tuesday, November 15th, 2011

Australia Marriage EqualitySame-sex marriage is for Gillard what the republic was for Howard. By opposing these reforms and defending “tradition” both leaders tried to provide the nation with a point of stability and continuity. Each caused the nation discomfort and unease, Gillard with her far-reaching carbon tax and Howard with his radical consumption tax. Marriage and monarchy have provided each leader with a counterweight to the profound changes they wrought. But popular opinion has not been on their side.

Under Howard a majority supported an Australian head of state. Under Gillard a majority believes same-sex couples should be allowed to marry. Howard and Gillard’s response has been to appear magnanimous to those who disagree with them while cunningly ensuring they get their own way.

Howard allowed a referendum on a republic but rigged the questions so republicans split and the monarchy remained. Gillard has “moved forward” to supporting a conscience vote for her party, but she assumes that arch-conservative Tony Abbott is unlikely to do the same and therefore any vote to allow marriage equality will be lost. Unfortunately for Gillard, that’s where the parallel ends.

Australia: Gillard Allows Marriage Equality Conscience Vote, Keeps Anti Gay Party Platform

Monday, November 14th, 2011

Australia Marriage EqualityJULIA Gillard will back a conscience vote for Labor MPs on gay marriage, as the Age/Nielsen poll shows a growing majority of Australians favour legalising marriage equality.

But in a stand that will deeply disappoint those arguing for change, the Prime Minister also wants opposition to gay marriage to stay in the ALP platform, which will be debated at next month’s party conference.

Sixty-two per cent of voters would like to see gay marriage legalised, a rise from 57 per cent a year ago, according to the poll. Thirty-one per cent are opposed, compared with 37 per cent in November 2010.

Australia: Watch Gillard and The Labor Right in Upcoming Marriage Equality Fight

Saturday, November 12th, 2011

Australia Labor Meeting and Marriage EqualityAFORTNIGHT from Thursday, a group of men and women will crowd into Sydney’s shmickly renovated Trades Hall for a standing-room-only chat about political strategy.

It will be the big face-to-face meeting of the National Right before Labor’s national conference kicks off the next day, and the crescendo of many conversations about how to deal with a push to shift the party’s avowed opposition to gay marriage.

What happens at that meeting will be influenced heavily by what Julia Gillard has to say on the subject in the interim. After her flurry of international meetings, the Prime Minister is expected to come out publicly to endorse a conscience vote. But it’s what she has to say about whether the party’s platform should change that is the real point of interest here.
