Australia: Marriage Equality Legislation Next Month May Split Labor

Sunday, January 1st, 2012

Australia Marriage EqualityTHE stage is set for a new internal brawl in the Gillard government over same-sex marriage, with a Labor powerbroker predicting that a private member’s bill to amend the Marriage Act will further undermine the Prime Minister’s leadership.

Labor backbencher and Left faction member Stephen Jones will introduce legislation aimed at legalising same-sex marriage when Federal Parliament resumes next month. His move comes after last month’s ALP national conference voted to reverse the party’s long-standing opposition to same-sex marriage.

But with Labor MPs allowed a conscience vote on the issue, Mr Jones’ bill is doomed to be voted down by the combined forces of its Labor opponents – including Prime Minister Julia Gillard – and the Coalition.

New Poll Finds Labor Support Would Increase 5% if Party Supports Marriage Equality

Thursday, October 20th, 2011

Australia Marriage EqualityLabor can expect a swing in its favour of almost 5% if it supports marriage equality, a new national poll has found.

The poll by Galaxy Research found almost half of Greens voters and a third of young voters would be more likely to vote for the ALP if it adopted a new policy allowing same-sex couples to marry.

It also found almost a quarter of voters who already support Labor will be stronger supporters if the Party backs marriage equality.

Australia: Victorian ALP Votes in Favor of Marriage Equality

Friday, October 7th, 2011

Australia Gay Marriage VoteThe ALP state conference has voted to send a message to Julia Gillard to “get over it” and legalise gay marriage. Only the conservative shop assistant’s union voted against the urgency motion.

However, national secretary Joe De Bruyn declined to debate the issue, saying it was a matter for the national platform and the powerful union would save its arguments for the National conference in December.

Ms Gillard has regularly reiterated her opposition to gay marriage, but a strong move is expected at the national conference to change the party’s platform, which will put pressure on the federal government to amend the Marriage Act.

Australia: Labor Leader Claims Marriage Equality Will Cost Party Seats

Thursday, August 11th, 2011

Labor will lose federal seats in Queensland and western Sydney if it backs gay marriage, a member of the party’s powerful national executive says.

Joe de Bruyn says lower house MPs from the sunshine state are particularly nervous as polls show the ALP facing electoral oblivion.

“There are people who believe that this issue could lose them the next election,” Mr de Bruyn, the national secretary of the Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees Association, said.

Australia: Greens, Labor at Odds Over Marriage Equality

Sunday, July 31st, 2011

In Brisbane last Wednesday, 25 middle-aged and elderly parents met the Attorney-General, Robert McClelland. They came from all over Queensland and were of various political persuasions. Their common bond was that all had a gay child and they wanted that child to have the right to marry.

Poignant stories were exchanged about the ostracising of gay people in the community and the mental health problems that can result. One 82-year-old gentleman lamented that his son had moved to Canada, where gay marriage is legal, and would not return to Australia because he felt like a second-class citizen here.

McClelland gave no commitment but responded with empathy, saying such stories would be important as debate on the topic grew.

Australia: Victoria’s Labor Party Leader Endorses Marriage Equality

Friday, May 20th, 2011

Daniel AndrewsThe Labor Party’s Victorian leader (the second largest state), Daniel Andrews, has given his backing to equality in Australia.

“Like a growing number of Australians I recognise that denying same sex couples the option of marriage is unfair,” Mr Andrews told The Australian. “My view on this issue was influenced when one of my staff and her partner had to travel to America to get married. That brought home to me the unfairness of the current situation.”

Australia: Labor Member Backs Marriage Equality

Tuesday, February 15th, 2011

Australia Marriage EqualityTHE contentious issue of same-sex marriage has been reignited in the Labor Party. Backbencher Ian Hunter says the party’s policy is “morally bankrupt”. “The current ALP policy in this matter is a nonsense,” he said in an emotional speech to the Upper House.

Mr Hunter, who has a same-sex partner, is co-sponsoring a Greens Bill aimed at allowing same-sex couples equal marriage rights in Australia for the first time.

The issue of same-sex marriages was the subject of a fiery debate at the ALP State Convention in November where Federal Finance Minister Penny Wong was given a standing ovation for endorsing a motion supporting same-sex marriage.
