NY: Celebrities Cheer for Marriage Equality Passage

Saturday, June 25th, 2011

Singers Lady Gaga and Ricky Martin and actor Neil Patrick Harris on Friday tweeted congratulatory messages to New York for becoming the sixth state to legalize gay marriage.

The New York Senate late Friday night approved the marriage legislation championed by Governor Andrew Cuomo with the help of four Republicans who joined all but one Democrat in voting for the measure.

The Assembly overwhelmingly approved the measure last week. A last-minute amendment that broadened the bill’s religious protections helped win over two undecided Republicans in the Senate.

NY: Lady Gaga Asks Her Little Monsters to Join HRC in Marriage Equality Fight

Friday, June 17th, 2011

Lady GagaLady Gaga has activated her “little monsters” in the gay marriage battle in New York – a move supporters of same-sex nuptials fear will only anger reticent lawmakers. The musical superstar tweeted the fans Thursday, urging them to call state senators to demand they act on the gay marriage bill currently before the Senate.

The measure passed the Assembly Wednesday night for the fourth time since 2007. Currently, 31 senators, including two Republicans, have come out in favor of the proposal – just one vote shy of the 32 needed for passage. Three GOPers are said to be undecided.

“I am so proud to be a New Yorker!,” Gaga wrote in one tweet. “One step closer to equality and toward the legalization of Gay Marriage in America. Full Equality. Unity.”

Lady Gaga Urges Fans to Call GOP State Senator to Support Marriage Equality

Monday, March 7th, 2011

Lady Gaga in AlbanyLady Gaga took a moment during Friday’s concert in Buffalo to call on her fans to deluge New York state Sen. Mark Grisanti with demands that he endorse marriage equality. In 2008 Grisanti declared that he was “unalterably opposed” to gay marriage and he voted against the Senate’s bill along with every other Republican. But Gaga says he’s now “on the fence.”

“There’s a senator here in Buffalo that’s on the fence about whether or not to vote for this particular bill and I would like to give you all his e-mail,” Lady Gaga told the crowd in HSBC Arena.

“His name is Sen. Mark Grisanti.” She urged her fans to e-mail Grisanti and suggested “2,000 e-mails in his BlackBerry this evening or tomorrow” might help sway his position on marriage equality.
