MD, USA: Transgender Protection Law Survives Attack

Sunday, April 15th, 2012

Maryland Marriage EqualityIn a little-noticed development, opponents of a transgender non-discrimination law approved earlier this year by the Baltimore County Council attempted to kill the law by circulating petitions to gather signatures needed to place it on the ballot in a referendum.

Organizers announced on Tuesday that they failed to obtain signatures from the required three percent of voters in the county needed to place the law on the ballot. The law bans discrimination against transgender people in the county in the area of employment, housing and public accommodations.

Moldova: Proposed Anti Discrimination Bill Under Fire From Orthodox Church

Monday, April 9th, 2012

The Alliance for European Integration (AIE) is attempting to pass an anti-discrimination bill in the Moldovan city of Balti, where the City Council made law an ordinance banning the “propagandising” of homosexuality.

But they are up against the objections of a most unexpected alliance – that between the conservative Orthodox Church and the opposition Communist Party.

Both parties are working hard to convince Moldovans that the bill – along with the government’s 2011 registration of the country’s tiny Muslim minority as a state-recognised religion – would mean an unbridled “Islamisation and homosexualization” of Moldova.

Saturday, April 7th, 2012

Chile: Lawmakers Respond to Murder of Gay Man With Gay Rights LawLawmakers in Chile have responded to the murder of Daniel Zamudio by passing a gay-inclusive anti-discrimination law.

Zamudio died March 27 from injuries he received during an attack in a park in Santiago on March 3. Police have arrested 4 suspects who have been charged with beating Zamudio for an hour, burning him with cigarettes and carving Nazi symbols into his body. Officials believe the 24-year-old Zamudio was targeted because he is gay.

The House of Deputies this week joined the Senate in approving the anti-discrimination bill which was first proposed in 2005. Evangelical churches had lobbied heavily against the measure, arguing it would lead to the eventual legalization of gay marriage, the AP reported.

AK, USA: Anti Discrimination Law Could Pass Next Month

Tuesday, March 27th, 2012

Alaska Gay Rights BillAn ordinance banning discrimination against LGBT people in Anchorage, Alaska, could be passed on an upcoming municipal ballot in April.

There have been attempts to pass such an ordinance several times since Anchorage was granted city status in 1977, but the State’s vocal conservative Christian community always ensured the bill was vetoed or crushed at the final hurdle.

Surprisingly, the ordinance – which has been garnering almost as much attention in Alaska as the US presidential race — has won unprecedented support from faith leaders, including the Episcopal bishop and 50 other churches and religious groups. However, twice as many churches have mobilised in an attempt to defeat the measure.

Group Challenges Anti Gay Law in Northern Cyprus

Wednesday, February 8th, 2012

A case has been lodged at the European Court of Human Rights against Turkey today to decriminalise homosexuality in Northern Cyprus.

The move, by the Human Dignity Trust, follows reports that Northern Cyprus’s anti-gay law continues to be employed despite assurances given by its leader that it would be repealed.

Cyprus was required by the ECHR to decriminalise consensual sex between consenting adults in 1993, but in the Turkish-occupied part of Northern Cyprus, homosexual acts are still illegal.

Kansas Group Seeks Repeal of Anti Gay Sex Law

Sunday, November 27th, 2011

Kansas Gay Sex LawWhen Gov. Sam Brownback last year issued his first executive order, which created the Office of the Repealer, he said he wanted to get rid of laws that were unreasonable, unduly burdensome, duplicative, onerous or in conflict.

Such laws, Brownback said, “are detrimental to the economic well-being of Kansas; hinder the growth of liberty and opportunities for Kansans and Kansas businesses; and defy a common-sense approach to governance. … ”

The Kansas Equality Coalition, a group that advocates for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights, wants to hold Brownback to his word.
