NJ: Which Legislators Missed the Marriage Equality Vote?

Sunday, February 19th, 2012

Legislators who missed Marriage Equality voteAlthough activists were elated when the Assembly approved same-sex legislation on Thursday, they were, like jilted suitors, saddened by the ones who got away.

Take Assemblywoman Mary Pat Angelini (R-Monmouth), the only Republican strongly in favor of the measure, whom gay rights advocates are fuming at for missing the vote, even though the bill passed 42-33.

In an ironic twist, The Auditor hears she was in Jamaica celebrating her 25th wedding anniversary. Still, gay rights advocates had hoped she would shorten her vacation. Angelini could not be reached for comment and her staff did not return calls.

Time to Write or Call Your New Hampshire Legislators to Save Marriage Equality

Friday, October 28th, 2011

New Hampshire Gay Marriage RepealOur friend John Austin writes from New Hampshire:

“Today I write to ask for your help. In New Hampshire our State Representatives have decided that they want to bring up Gay Marriage again and try to repeal it.

“As a business professional I have been one that has actually had an increase in business because of couples getting married in our state.

“I have written and expressed my opinion on this bill to local officials and hope that you will also. Repealing this law results in
discrimination and it needs to be stopped.

“I hope that you will join me in the fight. Write the NH State Representatives. Without your help and theirs we might all loose the fight.”

John has provided a copy of the original bill – you can see it here:

Out Gay and Lesbian Legislators Play Oversized Role in Marriage Equality Debates

Sunday, March 6th, 2011

Openly Gay Gordon FoxOf America’s 7,382 state legislators, only 85 are openly gay or lesbian. They are, however, playing an outsized and often impassioned role when the agenda turns to recognizing same-sex couples with civil unions or full marriage rights.

In Hawaii and Illinois, gay state representatives were lead sponsors of civil union bills signed into law earlier this year. In Maryland and Rhode Island, gay lawmakers are co-sponsoring pending bills that would legalize same-sex marriage. In New York, a gay senator, Tom Duane, is preparing to be lead sponsor of a marriage bill in his chamber later this session.

“For my colleagues, knowing that I am not allowed to marry the person that I love and want to marry, that’s very powerful,” said Duane, a Democrat from Manhattan. “It’s more difficult for them to take for granted the right they have to marry when I don’t have it.”

NC: GOP Legislators Hope to Pass Gay Marriage Ban

Thursday, November 11th, 2010

The economy dominated the fall campaign, but leaders among North Carolina’s social conservatives believe the Republican sweep at the Legislature should finally permit a vote on a state constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage.

North Carolina is the only state in the Southeast that hasn’t approved an amendment restricting marriage to one man and one woman. Democratic leadership in the Legislature have refused to consider GOP-penned bills on the issue for several years, and gay rights organizations have offered strong opposition to what it called imprinting discrimination permanently into state law.

Now with Republicans solidly in the majority in the General Assembly starting this January for the first time in more than a century, chances for a vote in the House and Senate are fairly strong, GOP lawmakers said.

HRC Scorecard: Three US Legislators Get Perfect 100

Friday, October 22nd, 2010

HRC ScorecardThe Human Rights Campaign on Friday issued its scorecard for the 111th Congress detailing the level of support that lawmakers have for pro-LGBT legislation. On a scale of 0 to 100, U.S. House members and U.S senators are scored for their support for pro-gay bills in Congress, such the vote on hate crimes protection legislation or co-sponsorship of bills such as the Uniting American Families Act.

“While advancements for equality were made this Congress, a strong and devoted group of anti-LGBT legislators continues to stymie the progress LGBT people deserve,” said HRC President Joe Solmonese. “The fact that the first ever vote to repeal ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ in the House of Representatives was countered by a filibuster in the Senate illustrates the landscape.”

Gay Reps. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.) and Jared Polis (D-Colo.) each received scores of 100. But Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.), another gay lawmaker, received a score of 96. He lost points for not co-sponsoring legislation that would overturn the Defense of Marriage Act.
