CT: Chely Wright Marries Partner

Sunday, August 21st, 2011

Connecticut - Chely Wright WeddingCountry music singer Chely Wright and Lauren Blitzer tied the knot on Saturday. The women announced in April plans to marry at Blitzer’s aunt’s home in Connecticut, one of six states where gay marriage is legal. (The women live in New York, but at the time of their announcement the state had yet to legalize such unions.)

Both wore Jose Dias-designed white gowns for their big day. Wright told PEOPLE.com that they opted out of including veils because “We like our hair too much!”

The couple served barbecue from New York’s Blue Smoke restaurant to their roughly 200 guests.

VT: Governor Performs Lesbian Wedding Ceremony

Wednesday, August 17th, 2011

Vermont Lesbian WeddingMaking good on a campaign promise, Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin married a lesbian couple in a small ceremony in his office.

The first-term Democrat presided over the marriage Wednesday of 55-year-old Michele “Mitch” Beck and 56-year-old Ann Beck, of Royalton. Shumlin led the push to legalize same-sex weddings in Vermont as a state lawmaker in 2009.

Shumlin met the couple at a campaign event when he was running for governor last summer and told them he’d be happy to perform their wedding ceremony if he were elected.

India: With Protection Order, Court Also Recognizes Lesbian Marriage

Friday, July 29th, 2011

Same-sex marriages are not legal in India. But that did not stop a Gurgaon court from effectively recognizing a marriage between two lesbians.

While granting police protection to a runaway lesbian couple from Khekada village in Baghpat, additional sessions judge Vimal Kumar recorded matter-of-factly that Beena and Savita claimed to be married to each other.

Their statements were recorded in the order without any indication that such a marriage had no legal status. “We have married to each other on July 22, 2011 of our own free will without coercion, duress, fraud, misrepresentation etc,” it stated.

Vermont Inn Sued for Rejecting Lesbian Wedding

Wednesday, July 20th, 2011

The Wildflower Inn in Lyndonville, Vt., bills itself as a “vacation sanctuary” where the welcome mat is rolled out even for the family dog. The inn, nestled in the mountains on 570 acres, was voted Best Family Resort by Yankee Magazine in 2010 and has enjoyed positive reviews in travel publications and websites that range from National Geographic Traveler to Trip Advisor.

But according to a lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union, that warm Wildflower welcome doesn’t extend to gay couples.

Court documents filed in Vermont Superior Court claim that when Katherine Baker and Ming-Lien Linsley, a lesbian couple, tried to book their wedding reception at the Wildflower, they were told via email that innkeepers Mary and Jim O’Reilly “do not host gay receptions” because of their “personal feelings.”

NY: Old Homestead Steakhouse to Pay for Lesbian Couple’s Wedding

Tuesday, July 19th, 2011

Old Homestead SteakhouseOwners of a New York steakhouse say they are pulling out all the stops and paying for the wedding of two women who will be tying the knot this upcoming weekend. Carol Anastasio and Mimi Brown have been together for 20 years, and they will finally get to say ‘I do’ on July 24, the same day New York’s legislation allowing same-sex marriage comes into effect.

The couple told the New York Daily News they rushed to city hall on the Monday after the legislation was passed, only to be told they had to wait a month until the law came into effect.

The two were featured in an article in June and Marc Sherry, co-owner of the Old Homestead Steakhouse, decided he had to help them celebrate their big day. “They were, I believe, the first couple to apply,” Sherry told QMI Agency on Sunday morning. “The story was very touching.”

My Big Lesbian Wedding

Saturday, April 23rd, 2011

Lesbian WeddingIt was the beginning of February 2008 when it started: I was 26 and had just broken up with my boyfriend. Our three-month relationship had been much like a rich French meal: delicious and indulgent while it lasted, but afterwards leaving a slight nausea. Although he and I were physically attracted to one another, we were unsuited emotionally. Yet I still felt upset by our decision to split, largely because it was another in what I saw as a long line of failures.

Back to square one in the search for a soulmate. But why did I even want one?

Perhaps I wasn’t made for relationships; I couldn’t work through things, preferring to run away from mess and start afresh elsewhere. Besides, nothing I ever got from any man was enough. However loving they were, soon enough I’d start to feel that familiar yearning: I wanted more. But more of what? I didn’t know.

The Fashion Show Takes On Gay/Lesbian Weddings

Thursday, January 6th, 2011

This week, Bravo surprised viewers of The Fashion Show — their not-quite-successful Project Runway replacement — with a super gay challenge: create wedding looks for three same-gender couples.

The two gay boys got stuck with bitchy designer Calvin Tran, who should have been kicked off long ago but for the sake of drama the producers have kept him on. This caused insane tension as Calvin decided (once again) that he was God’s gift to design and didn’t need to listen to the grooms’ requests – even though he was tasked to create wardrobe for their wedding day!

Fortunately, that stress was easily replaced by the joy shared between the two lesbian couples. Johanna and Andrea were having a 1950s event, with Johanna donning a doting housewife look while Andrea was the flashy dandy. Bridgette and Christina, meanwhile, wanted a simple but elegant beach affair, with clothing that reflected their personalities. Upon seeing their outfits all four women lit up, and the way they worked the runway was insanely fun.

MA: Lesbian Episcopal Priests Marry

Tuesday, January 4th, 2011

Episcopalians here and across the country are already divided over whether to elect gay bishops and allow their priests to perform same-sex weddings. Now they have another issue to discuss: The marriage of two lesbians who are high-level Episcopal priests in Massachusetts.

In a wedding that appears to be the first of its kind in the U.S. – at least in the Episcopal Church – former Plymouth priest the Rev. Mally Lloyd married the Rev. Katherine Ragsdale, dean and president of the Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, on New Year’s Day. The Rev. Lloyd, a former pastor at Christ Church in Plymouth, is now a ranking official of the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts.

The Rev. Lloyd and the Rev. Ragsdale were married in a ceremony at the Cathedral Church of St. Paul in Boston, with about 400 guests attending. Bishop M. Thomas Shaw, the state’s highest ranking Episcopal official, presided.
