Lithuania: Only 4% Support Civil Unions for Gays

Wednesday, December 28th, 2011

New York Gay Marriage PollA poll by Lithuanian market research company RIAT claims only 4% of the country supports the introduction of civil partnerships for gay couples.

The Baltic News Agency-commissioned poll says 70% of the population is in favour of some form of legal recognition for relationships outside marriage, but not for gays.

Same-sex marriages are currently banned under the Constitution and the Civil Code, and while civil partnerships are permitted to be introduced by the legislature, the Code states they may only be between a man and a woman.

Lithuania: Vote on Anti Gay Bill Next Week

Wednesday, December 8th, 2010

The Lithuanian parliament will vote next week on legislation to impose heavy fines on those who “promote” homosexuality. At a first reading last month, MPs approved adding an amendment to the Lithuanian Administrative Code stating that “public promotion of homosexual relations is to be punished by a fine from 2,000 to 10,000 litas [£480 to £2,400]“.

A second reading and vote takes place on December 16th.

Last month, lawmakers rejected a measure to ban Pride marches by just two votes but Amnesty International said that the new legislation would have the same effect.

Lithuania: Parliament Votes Down Anti Gay Law

Monday, November 15th, 2010

Lithuanian parliament  defeated by just two votes a controversial law that would have banned pride parades and, in the words of one MEP, “effectively made homosexuality illegal”.

In a first reading, 31 legislators voted in favour and seven were against the draft law that envisages fines from 2,000 to 10,000 litas for “publicly promoting homosexual relations”, with the vast majority of parliamentarians abstaining or not voting. The second reading is expected in December.

“Any evil cannot be propagated. Such events like gay parades do great harm to children,” Petras Grazulis, the legislator who tabled the draft legislation told AFP after the vote.

Lithuania: First Pride Parade Marred by Violence

Sunday, May 9th, 2010

Over 1,000 protesters showed up Saturday to demonstrate against Lithuania’s first gay pride parade, the AP reported. Opponents threw stones, shouted anti-gay slurs and hurled smoke bombs at participants taking part in Baltic Pride 2010 in Lithuania’s capital city of Vilnius.

About 400 people marched inside a sealed-off area near the city’s Neris river for about 2 hours as opponents were kept at bay by a large police presence and barricades. Protesters said they took issue with the large influx of foreigners participating in the parade.

“Sweden has already wiped out traditional families,” said one protester referring to Sweden’s recent gay marriage law. “Now they come over here to tell us how to live, how to think and who to sleep with. Lithuania will not allow such perversions.”

Lithuania: Gay Rights Advocates March in Vilnius

Saturday, May 8th, 2010

Gay rights campaigners in Lithuania stage a landmark rally Saturday in the Baltic state, where homosexuality is largely taboo, after winning a court battle allowing their march to go ahead. For the expected 300 participants, the Baltic Pride 2010 gathering in the capital Vilnius is crucial in this overwhelming Catholic and former communist EU nation of 3.3 million people.

“I’ll be taking part because it’s going to be a historic event. At last, we’re going to be able to march in the streets of Lithuania and wave our rainbow flag,” said Arnas Zdanevicius, referring to the global banner of gay rights.

Zdanevicius, 39, is an emblematic figure for Lithuania’s small gay movement. A sociologist, he is locked in a watershed unfair dismissal case with the University of Kaunas, which showed him the door claiming his academic record was weak.

Lithuania: Parliament Tries to Shut Down Pride Parade

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

Fifty members of Lithuania’s Parliament have petitioned the Prosecution Office to stop the Vilnius city government from permitting a gay pride parade in May.

The MPs say the parade would violate the new “Law on the Protection of Minors Against the Detrimental Effect of Public Information.”

The law, which took effect March 1, bans information that promotes sexual relationships, “denigrates family values” or encourages a non-heterosexual concept of marriage and family. Such information is prohibited wherever it could be accessed by a minor.

Lithuania: Anti Gay Law Takes Effect Today

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

Lithuania’s “Law on the Protection of Minors Against the Detrimental Effects of Public Information” took effect March 1. It bans information that promotes sexual relationships, “denigrates family values” or encourages a nonheterosexual concept of marriage and family.

Such information is prohibited when it could be accessed by a minor, such as in magazines and libraries and on the Internet.

Earlier versions of the bill specifically banned “information which agitates for homosexual, bisexual and polygamous relations.”
