IL: Lesbian Couple Marches to Iowa for Marriage License After Being Denied in Illinois

Saturday, June 5th, 2010

(John Schultz / Quad-City Times)

When Lindsey O’Brien and Rachel Miller walked into the Rock Island County Clerk’s Office to ask for a marriage license on Friday, the answer they got was quick and succinct.

“No.”

An entourage of about 10 people who were with the same-sex couple merely said, “soon, soon,” as they walked out. O’Brien, 26, of Moline and Miller, 26, of Chicago, with their friends and family carrying rainbow flags, then marched across the Centennial Bridge to the Scott County Recorder’s Office where they promptly received their marriage license.

While the march was symbolic, O’Brien said it is a small step toward a goal of seeing same-sex couples having all the recognition, rights and benefits of traditional married couples in the U.S.

CA: Transgender Woman and Partner Issued Marriage License in Shasta County

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

A Shasta County transgender woman and her fiancé are getting ready to tie the knot here in the North State. Danielle Severson and Rebecca Love weren’t sure it would happen after being denied a marriage license in Reno, Nevada.

“We went to try to get it in Reno and she had all the documentation proving she was legally a male but they wouldn’t give us a marriage license because her drivers license stated she was a female,” says Rebecca Love.

Disappointed, the couple applied in Shasta County where Severson is a resident. To their surprise the County Clerk Cathy Darling issued the marriage license. “I wanted to see if they’d do the same thing and I was surprised, I was kind of surprised that they didn’t, cause when you’ve been through so much discrimination, you expect it,” says Severson. “So when they gave it to us I said, hey babe, there you go, we’re getting married.”

SD: Lesbian Sergent Outed to Military After Police See Marriage License in Her Home

Sunday, March 14th, 2010

Former Air Force sergeant Jene Newsome says she played by the rules. She never told anyone in the military that she was a lesbian. But Newsome was discharged earlier this year under the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” law after Rapid City, S.D., police officers saw an Iowa marriage license in her home and told the Ellsworth Air Force Base.

The police were at Newsome’s home in November with an arrest warrant for her partner, who was wanted on theft charges in Alaska.

Newsome and the American Civil Liberties Union have filed a complaint against the department claiming police invaded her privacy.

Argentina: Judge Nullifies Gay Couple’s Marriage, Threatens Fine if They Don’t Hand Over License

Friday, March 12th, 2010

A federal judge in Buenos Aires has nullified the “marriage” of two gay men that took place last week in the Argentinian capital, saying “no elements existed” for the union to constitute a marriage.

On Monday, Judge Felix Gustavo de Igarzabal of Buenos Aires reversed a decision which allowed two gay men to marry at the city’s civil registry office on March 3. In his ruling the judge said no marriage took place “because of the absence of the institution’s structural elements,” in this case a man and a woman, and thus declared the act to be invalid. He also said any “legal effects derived from the act shall be suspended.”

The judge ordered the two men to turn in any marriage licenses or documentation received from the civil registry office within 72 hours or face monetary penalties.
