MD, USA: Cardinal Orders Priests to Read Anti Gay Letter in Churches

Monday, April 30th, 2012

Maryland: Cardinal Orders Priests to Read Anti Gay Marriage Letter in ChurchesIs it just me, or are these news items becoming a daily occurrence?

Here’s the latest, courtesy of popular LGBT blog Joe.My.God: The office of Baltimore Cardinal Edwin O’Brien required that a pro-marriage-discrimination letter authored by the cardinal himself be read aloud at Mass this past weekend as part of a petition drive to collect the signatures needed to ensure that a statewide referendum to overturn Maryland’s new marriage equality law makes it onto the ballot in November.

The cardinal addressed Catholics directly in the letter: “Today after Mass, you will have the opportunity to sign this petition, and I strongly encourage you to do so.”

MD, USA: Marriage Equality Could Mean Millions for State

Friday, April 27th, 2012

Marriage Equality Could Mean Millions for MarylandIf same-sex marriage survives the challenge expected at the ballot box this fall, money spent on weddings and related costs such as catering could boost Maryland’s economy by more than $90 million per year, according to economic analysts.

“That’s a significant economic impact,” said Mark Yost, president of the Maryland Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce. Yost was one of many who testified in favor of same-sex marriage before legislative committees during this year’s General Assembly session.

Maryland became the eighth state to legalize same-sex marriage in March, but opponents have vowed to put the issue before voters in the fall.

MD, USA: Transgender Protection Law Survives Attack

Sunday, April 15th, 2012

Maryland Marriage EqualityIn a little-noticed development, opponents of a transgender non-discrimination law approved earlier this year by the Baltimore County Council attempted to kill the law by circulating petitions to gather signatures needed to place it on the ballot in a referendum.

Organizers announced on Tuesday that they failed to obtain signatures from the required three percent of voters in the county needed to place the law on the ballot. The law bans discrimination against transgender people in the county in the area of employment, housing and public accommodations.

MD, USA: Freedom to Marry Abandoning Maryland?

Thursday, March 29th, 2012

Maryland Marriage Equality and Freedom to MarryThe excitement that followed Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley’s public signing of the state’s marriage equality bill was tempered by the threat of a referendum that will likely require state voters to determine the law’s fate.

Right now is the calm before the inevitable storm. Opponents of the law are gathering the 55,000 or so signatures they need, mostly by targeting churchgoers who are being urged by pastors to sign the petition. It seems unlikely they will fail in that signature-gathering effort. Meanwhile, the Marylanders for Marriage Equality coalition of local and national supporters is working to reorganize and hire someone to lead the campaign to preserve the law. The road ahead is daunting and will require a massive fundraising effort at a time when LGBT money is already needed for Obama’s re-election campaign, Tammy Baldwin’s U.S. Senate bid and marriage initiatives in a handful of other states. Make no mistake: the national network of LGBT donors is stretched thin.

The national advocacy group Freedom to Marry has invested in Maryland in the past, but announced last year that it would take a pass this time around. Evan Wolfson, the group’s president, told the Blade, “Freedom to Marry has made it clear to members of the coalition and to lawmakers that our goal is to win, not simply to pass a bill, if there is not sufficient groundwork and investment in a campaign to win at the ballot. We have continued to press for clarity and progress on benchmarks for success, and have urged elected officials, national organizations, and advocates on the ground to show the plan, investment, and activities needed now to build public support and succeed at the ballot, not just the legislature.”

MD, USA: 40% Favor Marriage Equality, 43% Oppose It, Poll Says

Wednesday, March 28th, 2012

New York Gay Marriage PollForty percent of Marylanders would vote to legalize same-sex marriage, while 43 percent would vote to make it illegal, a new statewide poll released today by OpinionWorks shows.

The polling firm interviewed 601 randomly selected registered voters across the state of Maryland to respond to the same-sex marriage bill recently signed into law by Gov. Martin O’Malley, which may be included on the ballot this November if opponents of the law are able to collect enough signatures before deadline.

Just 5 percent of respondents said they would vote on the referendum if it appeared on the ballot — although they were still undecided — while 11 percent claimed they held no opinion or were unlikely to vote on the matter.
