France: Mayor of Montpellier Marries Gay Couple

Monday, February 7th, 2011

A GAY couple have been “married” by the maire of Montpellier. Socialist Helene Mandroux married a local radio boss, Florent Robin, 49, and a teacher of Portuguese, Tito Santos-Mota, 51, in a symbolic ceremony designed to raise the issue of the unequal treatment of gay people.

Ms Mandroux did not officially enter the marriage in the register and the couple decided not to kiss, saying they would wait for it to be made official first.

The local councillors of the Socialist majority lined up outside the mairie to make a traditional haie d’honneur for the couple to walk between as they came out.

Moscow Mayor Bans Another Gay Rally

Wednesday, December 15th, 2010

Moscow Gay Rally BannedHot on the heels of October’s European court ruling that the ban on gay rights parades in Moscow violated the freedom of assembly, right to effective remedy and protections against discrimination, Moscow’s new mayor has put a stop to a planned parade in Lubyanka Square.

The Russian LGBT Network planned to demonstrate in support of those who have been convicted of the law that criminalised consensual sexual relations between men. Other activists were due at the event, including Lyudmila Alekseeva and Nina Tagankina from the Moscow Helsinki Group.

The law was introduced in 1933 and was the 121st Article of the Russian Soviet Federalist Socialist Republic Criminal Code. Consensual sex between men was punishable by up to 5 years in prison – while the same article specified that the sentence was increased by up to 3 years in cases of rape.

Peru: Pro Gay Marriage Mayor Wins in Lima

Wednesday, October 27th, 2010

Susana VillaranThe battle to be mayor of Lima, finally won by Susana Villaran, may have been the tightest electoral race in Peru’s history. It was certainly one of the most drawn-out. Electoral officials took more than three weeks to recount 8,384 ballots that were challenged over technical errors such as missing fingerprints and signatures on tally sheets.

Exasperated Lima residents, who cast their votes on 3 October, took to the streets in protest just a day before conservative candidate Lourdes Flores conceded defeat to Ms Villaran. Ms Villaran, the candidate for a leftist movement known as Fuerza Social (Social Force), becomes the first elected female mayor of the Peruvian capital since it was founded in 1532.

Ms Villaran favours gay marriage and the decriminalisation of abortion, both deeply controversial topics in Peru. Her stance could have lost her votes. Nonetheless, her campaign slogan “hope will conquer fear” finally won through, albeit by the smallest of margins.

Mexico: Catholic Cardinal Accuses Mayor of Gay Marriage Bribe to Supreme Court; Mayor Sues

Thursday, August 19th, 2010

Capital Mayor Marcelo Ebrard filed suit Wednesday against Cardinal Juan Sandoval, who accused the politician of bribing Mexican Supreme Court justices to uphold Mexico City’s ordinance allowing same-sex marriage. The suit seeks an economic sanction against one of Mexico’s leading Catholic prelates, sources close to the case told Efe.

Also named in the complaint was the spokesman for the Mexico City Archdiocese, Hugo Valdemar, who this week said the capital’s gay-friendly ordinances were doing more damage “than drug trafficking.”

Mexico has been racked by drug-related violence in recent years, with some 28,000 people killed since late 2006. Ebrard had threatened to bring defamation charges if Sandoval did not retract his suggestion that the judges had been bribed into upholding the ordinances authorizing gay marriage and the adoption of children by same-sex couples.

Italy: Lesbian Couple’s Relationship Recognized by the City of Torino

Saturday, July 24th, 2010

Note: This was sent to us by one of our Italian followers. The original article is in Italian, and for speed, we have used Google Translate to translate it. It’s not perfect, but you’ll get the gist:

Debora and Antonella six months ago were symbolically united by Chiamparino. This is the first lesbian couple who obtained official certification actual official name.

Now it is not just a symbolic act: Debora and Antonella Galbiati Ventrella D’Annibale, the two women in February “celebration” of their marriage in the presence of the mayor of Turin Sergio Chiamparino, have their certificate of residence of family recognition based on affective bond.

The actual official name of the City withdrew this morning, after a few days ago of the Turin city council had approved the proposal of popular initiative establishing it.

“For years we have been on the same family and that we withdrew the certificate now has the same number of that act,” notes Deborah Galbiati Ventrella underlining a “continuity between the symbolic and our marriage certificate withdrawn today – continues – is not a goal: we recognize the importance of this decision, but our fight continues because there is a recognition at national unions like ours.”

The symbolic marriage of six months ago of a couple in a room of Valentine, is a source of controversy for the presence of the mayor, beginning with the Curia of Turin to the effect that it was a gesture intended to create “confusion”.

Yesterday the first certified master of emotional bond was given to a couple formed by a man and a woman, Silvano Canatrale Olive and Catherine, both divorced with children, who live together for years.

Mexico: Mexico City Mayor to Defend Gay Marriage Law

Tuesday, April 13th, 2010

Mexico City’s mayor says he will defend the capital’s gay-marriage law and insists the ordinance will take effect in March despite an appeal by federal prosecutors.

Mayor Marcelo Ebrard says the federal appeal on constitutional grounds is wrong. He says nothing in Mexico’s constitution prohibits same-sex marriage or adoption by gay couples.

The city’s legal adviser, Leticia Bonifaz, said Thursday the first gay marriages will be performed in early May while the Supreme Court hears the case.

CA: Mayor of Palm Springs Would Be First Gay, Legally Married Member of Congress With Children

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

Stephen Adams, vice president and regional manager of Sterling Bank & Trust, and Equality California Executive Director Geoff Kors hosted a fundraising event for Palm Springs Mayor Steve Pougnet on the 40th floor of the Transamerica Pyramid. Mayor Pougnet is the Democratic candidate challenging Republican Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack (Sonny Bono’s former wife) for her seat in the US House of Representatives. Adams said Pougnet has a very good chance to beat her and turn the congressional district Democratic.

Pougnet would be the first gay, legally married member of Congress with young children. In 2007, he was elected Mayor of Palm Springs where he has proven himself as a bi-partisan leader. He is committed to sustainability and renewable energy initiatives, will champion comprehensive health care, and fight to reinvigorate the American economy. He is challenging Mary Bono-Mack – one of only a few Republican members of Congress who is serving in a district that Barack Obama won.

Adams acknowledged the presence of Christine Pelosi, daughter of Speaker Nancy Pelosi, calling the latter “a hero in health care.” He also spoke of the extreme rudeness and sometimes violence of many of the rightwing tea party people – especially calling Congressman Barney Frank the f-word.
