Australia: Marriage Equality Activists to Protest Gillard September 28th

Thursday, September 15th, 2011

Australia Gay Marriage ProtestMarriage equality protesters are set to target Prime Minister Julia Gillard this month when she attends a lunch at the Park Hyatt, Melbourne.

Equal Love convenor Ali Hogg said the marriage equality group will join forces with the Refugee Action Collective on September 28 to protest against Gillard’s continued opposition to same-sex marriage and the Government’s treatment of refugees.

“With the Government coming under pressure from ultra-conservatives such as the Australian Christian Lobby and Joe de Bruyn from the SDA [Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees Union] it is important that those supporters of marriage equality keep up pressure on Gillard to show that the majority of Australians support marriage equality and it’s about time the ALP listens to our voices,” Hogg said.

Australia: Melbourne Church Pushes for Marriage Equality

Tuesday, January 11th, 2011

A NEW gay and lesbian-friendly church in Northcote is set to become a Melbourne hub for same-sex marriage. Acts2Faith Church pastor Becky Bauer said strengthening legal rights for gay partnerships was a common prayer item for the church, which has attracted a loyal following since opening late last year.

Ms Bauer, a Preston resident, came from the predominantly gay and lesbian Glory Tabernacle Christian Centre in the US to establish the non-denominational Christian church in a Northcote neighbourhood house.

“Our vision is to see LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) people come back into fellowship with God,” Ms Bauer said.

Australia: Marriage Equality Rallies Across Country Last Week

Sunday, November 28th, 2010

Australia Gay Marriage RalliesNational rallies on November 20 and 27 were held in support of equal marriage rights for lesbian, gay, transgender, and intersex (LGBTI) couples. November 20 was also Transgender Day of Remembrance. The day started in 1999 to remember those who were killed by anti-transgender hatred or prejudice.

Across the country, trans activists addressed equal marriage rights. A minute’s silence was held to remember those killed by transphobic violence. On November, 3000 people marched in Melbourne. The young and colourful crowd marched through the city to the marriage registry on Spring St.

Speakers included comedian Josh Thomas, Hannah Gatsby and students Hannah Williams and Savannah Supski, who drew media headlines after being banned from going to their school formal together.

Australia: Thousands Rally for Marriage Equality

Saturday, November 20th, 2010

Australia Gay MarriageThousands of people have marched through the streets of Melbourne, including politicians and celebrities, to call for equal marriage rights for same sex couples. The protesters are urging the public to punish political parties who oppose same sex marriage when they go to the polls later this month.

They say despite the Marriage Act being a Commonwealth issue, voters should use the upcoming Victorian election to send a message to federal politicians.

Comedian Josh Thomas spoke at the rally and says he cannot see why some politicians will not support gay marriage. “I just don’t understand people that are against it, I don’t understand their points,” he said.

Australia: Greens Promise Gay Marriage Bill in Victoria if Elected

Monday, November 8th, 2010

Australia Gay MarriageTHE Victorian Parliament could have a debate on same-sex marriage, with the Greens candidate in a strong position to snatch the seat of Melbourne pledging to introduce a private member’s bill on what has become a hot issue.

Brian Walters toldĀ The Age that he would introduce a private member’s bill to allow same-sex marriage if he wins Education Minister Bronwyn Pike’s seat at the November 27 state election.

With a hung parliament a real possibility, the Greens could be in a good position to negotiate for a conscience vote. But such a vote could only happen with the consent of the party leaders and the party room. Both Premier John Brumby and Opposition Leader Ted Baillieu have indicated they are opposed to same-sex marriage.
