Marriage Equality Foes Choose Santorum to Stop Romney

Sunday, January 15th, 2012

Rick Santorum has long drawn the special loathing of supporters of marriage equality for his fierce opposition to the measure, but until recently, he hadn’t had much luck benefitting from the flip side of that: The united support of marriage foes.

Since his Iowa victory, however, he’s begun finally to unite the wing of the Republican Party for whom marriage is a central issue. Former presidential candidate Gary Bauer endorsed Santorum last week, a group of leading social conservatives backed him today, and he just announced the endorsement of one of the highest-profile figures in the marriage wars, Maggie Gallagher, who until recently chaired the National Association for Marriage, the best funded group on its side.

Romney Plans Third Class Status for Gay and Lesbian Couples

Friday, December 16th, 2011

After suffering national embarrassment at the hands of a gay-married Vietnam veteran, Mitt Romney has issued his new plan for marriage in which gays aren’t just second class, some of us are third. The Boston Herald notes:

[Romney] expressed support for a constitutional amendment that could create a complex three-tier system of marriage — maintaining marriage rights for straight couples, allowing gays who have already married to remain married, but barring future same-sex marriages. “I think it would keep intact those marriages which had occurred under the law but maintain future plans based on marriage being between a man and a woman,” Romney said.

Romney Burnishing Anti Marriage Equality Credentials for Iowa

Monday, November 28th, 2011

Mitt Romney FlyerWith just 36 days to go until the Iowa caucuses, Mitt Romney’s first campaign brochure in the state presents the former Massachusetts governor as “the strongest Republican to beat Barack Obama and protect our values.”

Romney is “pro-life,” “pro-marriage,” and “pro-family,” the flyer boasts, highlighting his opposition to abortion and support for “a federal amendment to define marriage as between one man and one woman.”

Of course, Romney hasn’t always held these beliefs: he supported a woman’s right to choose until 2005 and had said marriage should be left to the states and kept out of the hands of the federal government.

Romney: I’m All for Gay Rights, Just Not the Whole Marriage Thing

Tuesday, November 22nd, 2011

Mitt Romney has said he supports gay rights, but not the legalization of gay marriage.

The 64-year-old Romney told the Nashua Telegraph on Monday that he remains opposed to gay marriage, but favors gay rights.

“The story on same-sex marriage is that I have the same position on that I had when I ran from the very beginning,” Romney said. “I’m in favor of traditional marriage. I oppose same-sex marriage. At the same time, I don’t believe in discriminating in employment or opportunity for gay individuals. So I favor gay rights, I do not favor same-sex marriage. That has been my position all along.”

Bachmann’s Claim About Romney and Marriage Licenses Debunked

Tuesday, November 8th, 2011

Michele Bachmann went after Mitt Romney’s record on same-sex marriage during an appearance on the Steve Deace radio show last week, accusing the former Massachusetts governor — whose state began issuing same-sex licenses in May of 2004 — of signing “189 same-sex marriage license.”

Without referring to Romney by name Bachmann asked, “If a candiate has signed those same-sex marriage licenses, how likely will they be to fight against same-sex marriage?” Listen:

Bachmann is regurgitating a popular misconception put forward by right-wing groups that conflates the state’s One Day Marriage Designation with actual marriage licenses.

Santorum: Marriage Equality’s All Romney’s Fault

Monday, October 31st, 2011

Rick Santorum on Saturday told a crowd of conservative Republicans that he’s finished making apologies for his opposition to gay marriage and blamed former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney for its legalization.

Speaking in Des Moines, Iowa at the Presidential Preference Convention hosted by the National Federation of Republican Assemblies, Santorum said he was being targeted in the media for his socially conservative stances.

“If you look at the debates, every single moral, cultural question has come to me first. I was in a conversation with Mike Huckabee the other day. I said, ‘Mike, they’re trying to Huckabee me.’ They’re trying to paint [me] into that box that you’re the social conservative candidate and ask you all these social conservative questions.”

Romney Confronted on Marriage Equality

Wednesday, October 12th, 2011

As Mitt Romney has regained his status as front-runner for the GOP presidential nomination in some national polls, several rivals have sought to revisit his past shifts on issues like abortion and same-sex marriage in an attempt to erode his support within the Republican base.

At the town hall, Romney was also pressed on same-sex marriage. A young woman asked why he believed that same-sex marriage “is lesser than a marriage between man and woman.”

“The ideal setting to raise a child for a society like ours is when there’s a man and woman in the marriage,” Romney said. He did not vary his answer when another young woman told him she had been raised by two women – her mother and her grandmother – and pressed him to explain why that was not an ideal setting.

Republican Marriage Equality Supporter Gives to Romney

Thursday, October 6th, 2011

Politico reports that Paul Singer, a major donor to the American Foundation for Equal Rights and its federal court battle against Proposition 8, has committed to Mitt Romney.

Ben Smith wonders what this might mean, if anything, for Romney’s positioning on LGBT rights issues:

Singer’s move cements the sense of Romney as an economic conservative and social moderate. Singer is also among the biggest donors to the same-sex marriage movement, and one of its critical players.

Romney, Bachman, and Santorum Sign NOM’s Anti Gay Marriage Pledge

Friday, August 5th, 2011

In case anyone had any doubts, Mitt Romney is planning a campaign rife with gay-bashing:

Romney, Bachmann, and Santorum signed on to supporting a federal constitutional amendment defining marriage, to appoint federal judges who don’t see a Constitutional right to same-sex marriage, and to back the Defense of Marriage Act.

They’ve also pledged to support offering a referendum on marriage in the District of Columbia, and to establish a “presidential commission on religious liberty” aimed at protecting the rights of marriage foes to speak out.

Romney Won’t Sign Anti Marriage Equality Pledge

Wednesday, July 13th, 2011

Mitt RomneyFormer Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney’s campaign said Tuesday that he will not sign a conservative Iowa Christian group’s far-reaching pledge opposing gay marriage, making him the first Republican presidential candidate to reject it.

Two of Romney’s rivals for the Republican nomination, Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, have signed the The Family Leader’s 14-point pledge, which calls on the candidates to denounce same-sex marriage rights, pornography, same-sex military accommodations and forms of Islamic law.

When it was first circulated last week, the introduction to the pledge stated that African American children were more likely to be raised in two-parent households when they were born into slavery than they are today. The group struck that language and apologized after black ministers complained, but it said it stands by the rest of the document.
