Minnesota Gay Groups Call Catholic Church on Political Campaigning

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010

Archbishop John Neinstedt says Minnesota’s bishops will be distributing “more than one million” DVDs across Minnesota just weeks before the election. Part of an orchestrated campaign against same-sex marriage, the DVDs were funded by an anonymous donor and produced by the Knights of Columbus, a group that donates to the National Organization for Marriage, which is also running anti-gay marriage ads in Minnesota. While Neinstedt says the effort isn’t about politics, the state’s largest LGBT advocacy group slammed the new campaign.

Dennis McGrath, spokesman for the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis, told the Minnesota Independent that the campaign is titled, “Preserving Marriage in Minnesota.”

The DVD itself, “One Man, One Woman – Marriage and the Common Good,” is a hodgepodge of anti–gay marriage arguments including statements by Maggie Gallagher, founder of the National Organization for Marriage, who says gay marriage will be taught in schools if it is legalized. (The 14-minute video can be viewed at this Knights of Columbus website.)

MN: New NOM TV Ad Equates MLK, Anti Gay Marriage Movement

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010

The Minnesota Family Council and the National Organization for Marriage launched a new television ad this week in support of Republican gubernatorial candidate Tom Emmer. It’s the fourth foray into political advertising for the socially conservative groups this cycle and the second television ad. The ad uses footage of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and says that Emmer is the only candidate that supports putting a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage on the ballot.

“It is important that the citizens of Minnesota know that both Mark Dayton and Tom Horner support imposing gay ‘marriage’ on Minnesotans without a vote of the people,” Tom Prichard of the Minnesota Family Council said in a press release about the ad. “Only Tom Emmer has publicly supported traditional marriage and the right of the people to vote on this important issue. That’s what this ad communicates.”

In an email on Wednesday afternoon, Brian Brown of the National Organization for Marriage said, “We’ve just released what may very well be our most powerful ad yet… focusing on the right of Minnesotans to vote for marriage, with footage from Dr. Martin Luther King’s famous speech and the civil rights movement.”

MN: Catholic Church to Attack Marriage Equality Efforts

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

Some of Minnesota’s Catholic bishops are preparing a push against the legalization of same-sex marriage in the final two months of the 2010 campaign season. So far, most Minnesota bishops are not making their plans public, but Bishop John Quinn of the Winona Diocese gave parishioners a glimpse in a recent newsletter (PDF). “The bishops of Minnesota are alarmed by the continuing attacks on the institution of marriage, and we are taking action,” he wrote.

Quinn reports that the diocese is sending parishes a DVD that provides “more detail about the Church’s teaching on marriage and about the possible effects that a same sex marriage policy would have in our state.”

Traditional marriage is suffering attacks, he wrote, and “the most threatening now are efforts to legalize ‘same sex’ or ‘gay’ marriage, that is, marriage between two men or between two women.”

MN: NOM, MN Family Council Run Ads Against Gay Friendly Candidates for Governor

Friday, August 13th, 2010

The Minnesota Family Council and the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) are teaming up against DFLer Mark Dayton and Independence Party candidate Tom Horner with new radio ads.

The ads are the second statewide campaign by NOM; the group released television ads against DFLers and IP candidates in the spring. The group also produced mailers against Sen. Paul Koering, the state’s only openly gay elected Republican. He lost his primary election this week.

“Voters in 31 other states have had the opportunity to decide the definition of marriage, and it’s time that Minnesotans had that same right,” said Brian Brown, president of the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) in a statement on Thursday. “The candidates for governor are asking voters for their support. We’re encouraging voters, in turn, demand of the candidates to guarantee they’ll support their right to vote on marriage and not impose gay marriage on them.”

MN: The Guy Target Didn’t Back is Pro-Gay Marriage

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

Antigay Republican Tom Emmer is making headlines for benefiting from Target Corp.’s $150K contribution to a conservative PAC supporting his bid for governor of Minnesota.

What isn’t making many headlines is the identity of his likely opponent. Pro-gay former U.S. senator Mark Dayton is in the lead heading into the August 10 Democratic primary. An heir to Dayton-Hudson Corp. fortune, Mark Dayton is the great-grandson of George Dayton, who stared the Dayton’s department store chain. In 1962, Dayton’s opened the first Target, a discount department store.

“Mark Dayton’s connection to Target is mostly a historical one,” his deputy campaign manager Katharine Tinucci told The Advocate.

MN: 30 Show Up for NOM Rally in Rochester

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

Same-sex marriage opponents rallied in Rochester on Friday, with organizers calling on supporters to back political candidates who support defining marriage as between a man and a woman.

“Get active, and one of the ways you can get active is by getting people registered to vote in your church,” said Chuck Darrell, communication director for the Minnesota Family Council. “We’ve got to protect the governorship.”

Roughly 30 people turned out for the lunchtime rally in the parking lot of New Life Worship Center in Rochester. The event was sponsored by the National Organization for Marriage as part of the “Summer for Marriage, One Man – One Woman Tour.”

MN: NOM Has Best Showing of Tour in Minneapolis – 75 People

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

Supporters of traditional marriage and gay marriage turned out in roughly equal numbers Wednesday to take part in simultaneous rallies on the State Capitol grounds, where the separate gatherings sparked none of the small but loud confrontations seen elsewhere in recent days.

About 150 people gathered on the lawn in front of the Capitol to hear speakers from the National Organization for Marriage (NOM), which is on a national tour organizing rallies in support of measures to define marriage as a union between a man and a woman.

NOM president Brian Brown led supporters chanting “One man, one woman!” and said the tour stop in Minnesota was designed to fight proposed legislation that would legalize gay marriage in Minnesota. He called heterosexual marriage a “human universal” and “the basis of our society,” while other speakers, including clergy members and a radio talk show host, cited the right of children to have both a mother and a father and criticized homosexual acts as lacking in spirituality.

MN: Rochester City Council Considering Domestic Partner Registry

Wednesday, July 7th, 2010

Independence Party gubernatorial candidate Tom Horner on Tuesday urged the Rochester City Council to approve a proposal to provide some domestic partnership benefits to same-sex couples.

The proposal brought forward by Rochester Mayor Ardell Brede would set up a same-sex domestic partnership registry. The goal is to ensure hospital visitation rights for same-sex couples.

“I hope that the Rochester City Council is able to go ahead and pass the domestic benefits. I think for Minnesota to be a state that is open to the best talent, that attracts the best talent, we need to address these kinds of equality issues and be a leader in addressing them.”

MN: Marriage Equality Plaintiffs Name State as Defendant

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

Three gay couples suing to overturn Minnesota’s gay marriage ban added the state as a defendant Tuesday, hours after Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman asked a judge to dismiss the lawsuit for not doing so.

The lawsuit, filed last month in Hennepin County, had named as its defendant the official who issues marriages licenses in that county. Freeman complained the state should be the main defendant, because gay marriage is prohibited under state law.

“You’ve got to have all the critical players at the table at one time,” said Freeman, saying the lawsuit should not proceed otherwise. Peter Nickitas, the attorney for the plaintiffs, had declined to comment on Freeman’s motion. But about two hours later, the plaintiffs sent out a news release stating they had amended their summons and complaint to include the state as a defendant.
