North Carolina: Amendment One Opponents Have Momentum, But Need SupportOpponents of Amendment One, the constitutional amendment that would ban same-sex marriage in North Carolina, say their campaign is “winnable,” but they need people around the country to focus on the May 8 vote.

With just over two weeks until the vote on a far-reaching constitutional amendment that would ban same-sex marriage and other unions in North Carolina, opponents of the measure say that momentum is building for their side, but more support from national donors will be critical to making their “winnable” campaign a reality.

In a conference call with bloggers on Sunday night, spokespeople for Protect All North Carolina Families, the coalition working to defeat the amendment, expressed optimism that North Carolina could remain the only Southern state without a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage when voters go to the polls on May 8. The potential win would represent a major turning point in a long-running losing streak on such ballot initiatives across the country.

LGBT Equality Movement Outspent By Opponents

Wednesday, August 3rd, 2011

The LGBT movement is making progress, but it’s being seriously outspent by opponents and still has “a long way” to go to reach equality.

And it’s a hard-edged conclusion in a year which has seen many dramatic gains for the movement — repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, significant federal court rulings against the Defense of Marriage Act, and a swing in public opinion toward support for same-sex marriage.

NY: Money Also Key in Marriage Equality Victory

Monday, June 27th, 2011

The passage of historic legislation legalizing same sex marriage in the state of New York last Friday was owed in large part to a compelling political motivator: money.

Although New York’s legislators were already disposed to approving gay marriage because of the more progressive disposition of the state and a major grassroots campaign in support of the bill, LGBT activists from both parties turned to a simple, poignant argument: Lawmakers not only stood to gain the support of well-funded gay-rights supporters if they backed the bill, they would suffer if they opposed it or shied away from the spotlight.

“I didn’t come in there saying, ‘Do this for me,’” recalled Ken Mehlman, the openly gay former RNC chairman who persuaded Republican lawmakers in Albany that there was not only political support but ideological consistency in backing the bill. “I said, ‘Do this for you.’ We didn’t walk in there saying, ‘Do this not only because it is the right thing from a policy perspective.’ We were saying, ‘It is the right thing to build the party from a political perspective.’”
