UK: Conservative MPs Try to Sabotage Marriage Equality Plan

Tuesday, January 17th, 2012

MPs Try to Sabotage UK Marriage EqualityConservative MPs are trying to sabotage David Cameron’s plan to legalise gay marriage, threatening a rebellion bigger than the one in which 81 voted against the Government on Europe.

A campaign to defeat the Coalition’s plan to lift the ban on civil marriage for gay and lesbian couples is being organised by traditionalist Tory MPs, who claim the idea would weaken the institution of marriage. Ministers fear the revolt will undermine Mr Cameron’s drive to modernise his party.

MPs have been promised a free vote, although ministers will be urged to support Mr Cameron. Opponents claim more than 100 Tory backbenchers could vote against gay marriage, dwarfing the number who voted for a Europe referendum last October. Backbenchers have protested to ministers about the Government’s backing for the change at private meetings of the 1922 Committee of Tory MPs. “Feelings are running high,” one senior party source said yesterday.

Mr Turnbull said already about 68 per cent of 1800 people who had responded supported gay marriage. He acknowledged that community views on the issue were “changing” and that the current laws were inconsistent.
Wentworth has one of the largest gay constituencies of any federal seat in the country.

“This survey is important as community views on marriage and the legal status of same-sex relationships are rapidly changing,” his email said.

Thursday, October 21st, 2010

Nitzan HorowitzNitzan Horowitz, the first openly gay politician to be elected to the Israeli Knesset (Parliament), is a man on a mission. Representing the left of centre, pro-peace New Movement-Meretz party, he has called for Israel to introduce secular marriages for gay and straight couples as well as campaigning for help for LGBT people from neighboring Arab countries who risk death if returned home.

Speaking last week at a London meeting of young members of the Zionist Federation as well as a separate audience of LGBT Jews, Mr Horowitz spoke of his experiences as a gay politician and how they have informed his campaigning for human and gay rights across the middle east.

“If you solve the issues about separating religion from the state you can solve a lot of the issues relating to LGBT rights,” he told both groups.

Australia: Strong Ally of the Gay Community to Retire

Tuesday, April 6th, 2010

The gay and lesbian community has lost one of its staunchest Liberal Party allies. Environmentalism, an understanding of gay and lesbian issues and a commitment to republicanism: Australia’s most unlikely Liberal, Malcolm Turnbull, today announced his decision not to contest the seat of Wentworth at the upcoming federal election.

Turnbull thanked his staffers and the voters who had shown their support over his five and a half year stint in the seat, and made a thinly veiled reference to the Liberal Party’s stance on carbon emissions as a reason for his decision.

“As a Member of Parliament, a Minister and especially as leader of the Party I have been proud to defend the principles of freedom, opportunity and enterprise, fundamental values of the Liberal Party,” he said before thanking former prime minister John Howard for appointing him Environment and Water Minister.
