USA: NOM Was Looking for Beautiful, Stupid People Against Marriage Equality

Wednesday, March 28th, 2012

NOM LogoWe wrote late Monday night about the National Organization for Marriage’s (NOM) secret plan to incite a race war in order to stop gays from getting their civil rights.

Well GLAAD noticed another part of the document that’s almost laughable. In an effort to counter Hollywood’s pro-gay influence on the culture, NOM wants to create a group of artists, athletes, writers and beauty queens who are anti-gay and – get this – stupid. Or as NOM calls them in the secret memo, “non-cognitive.” That means stupid.

USA: More on NOM’s Tactics to Block Marriage Equality

Tuesday, March 27th, 2012

NOM LogoThe fallout has begun from the National Organization for Marriage’s failed attempt to circumvent Maine’s campaign finance disclosure laws. The Human Rights Campaign has published four of NOM’s confidential strategic memos from 2009, which explicitly confirm many of the insidious tactics LGBT bloggers have been documenting for years. Most alarming from the memos is NOM’s admission that it has tried “to drive a wedge between gays and blacks” and also specifically targeted Latino groups with its messaging.

Here are some of the highlights of NOM’s tactics the new documents:

  1. “Drive a wedge between gays and blacks” by convincing them to fight over the language of “civil rights.”
  2. Bait Latino voters to oppose marriage equality as “a symbol of resistance to inappropriate assimilation.”

Starbucks Exec Takes Down National Organization for Marriage Representative

Wednesday, March 21st, 2012

Starbucks and Marriage EqualityA representative from the anti-gay group National Organization for Marriage (NOM) was promptly shut down after confronting a Starbucks executive on the topic of marriage equality at the annual Starbucks Shareholders Meeting in Seattle, Washington.

Jonathan Baker, director of NOM’s Corporate Fairness Project and self-identified Starbuck’s shareholder, asked whether the company’s support for marriage equality might affect the company internationally and offend supporters of so-called “traditional marriage.”

The Starbucks rep responded by saying: “I think Starbucks has many constituents, and from time to time we are going to make a decision that we think is consistent with the heritage and the tradition of the company that perhaps may be inconsistent with one group’s view of the world or a decision we may make…We made that decision, in our view, through the lens of humanity and being the kind of company that embraces diversity.”

NH: NOM Suddenly Decides Civil Unions Are OK

Tuesday, March 20th, 2012

NOM LogoThe National Organization for Marriage (NOM) is the leading group fighting the legalization of same-sex marriage around the country. It has raised and spent millions, opposing not only marriage equality but also civil unions.

Yet NOM is now backing legislation in New Hampshire that would repeal same-sex marriage but legalize civil unions, signaling a shift in its tactics as more states move toward recognizing marriage equality.

The New Hampshire House is expected to vote Wednesday on a bill that would repeal marriage equality and replace it with a civil unions law that was in effect in the state in 2008 and 2009. Same-sex marriage was legalized in the state on Jan. 1, 2010.

NOM Jumps into the Fray on Amendment One

Wednesday, March 7th, 2012

Amendment One and NOMHere we go, get your battle gear on. The National Organization for Marriage has officially declared war on LGBTs in North Carolina. Brian Brown has his hat in hand. Here’s the latest e-blast from the professional anti-gay organization. Why? I’ll explain after you take a look at this garbage.

“I’ll keep this short, but the need in North Carolina is urgent. We’ve just learned that gay marriage supporters in North Carolina have been stockpiling mountains of cash.

“It’s looking almost certain that in the final days before the election, they will launch an all-out air war, blanketing North Carolina TV and radio with ads full of lies and misinformation about the Marriage Protection Amendment–using scare tactics to maximum effect before we have a chance to respond.”

NOM to Maryland Senate: Reject Marriage Equality Bill

Sunday, February 19th, 2012

NOM LogoThe National Organization for Marriage (NOM) is calling on the Maryland Senate to reject a gay marriage bill approved Friday by the House of Delegates.

After nearly 3 hours of debate, House members approved Governor Martin O’Malley’s plan to make Maryland the eighth state to legalize gay marriage with a narrow 72 to 67 vote.

Supporters faced their greatest obstacle in the House, where Democratic leaders last year shelved a vote due to lack of support.

ME: NOM Plans to Fight Marriage Equality Referendum

Monday, January 30th, 2012

Maine Marriage Equality and NOMThe National Organization for Marriage is going back to Maine to fight a plan by LGBT advocates to legalize same-sex marriage through a ballot measure. Last week the group said it had collected enough signatures to put the question before Maine voters and expressed confidence that public opinion had moved enough that they could win.

NOM is back to fight, despite the fact that it’s fighting two disclosure lawsuits in the state from the last marriage battle, the Press Herald reports:

“Maine voters rejected gay marriage barely more than two years ago,” National Organization for Marriage President Brian Brown said in a prepared statement. “What part of ‘no’ don’t gay marriage advocates understand?”

NJ: NOM Plans to Spend Half a Million Dollars Fighting Marriage Equality

Wednesday, January 11th, 2012

NOM and New Jersey Marriage EqualityAnd by NOM, we mean the Vatican.

Same-sex marriage opponents in Trenton vowed to fight the latest move, with the National Organization for Marriage saying it was ready to spend up to $500,000 to back state lawmakers who will fight the measure. “The media is reporting that gay marriage is sure to pass through the Legislature, but we heard the same false story in 2009 and 2010. The people of New Jersey can and will stop this bill,” said NOM President Brian Brown.
