NY: After Dust Settles, 659 Couples Married in New York City Sunday

Monday, July 25th, 2011

A record 659 couples married in New York City on Sunday, as New York became the sixth – and most populous – state to legalize gay marriage. The Sunday nuptials shattered the city’s old record set in 2003 of 621 marriages in a single day on Valentine’s Day.

Celebrations began at midnight in several cities with mayors officiating over weddings at the earliest possible moment.

With a rainbow-lit Niagara Falls as a backdrop, gay activists Kitty Lambert, 54, and Cheryle Rudd, 53, married surrounded by roughly 100 close friends and family. The women, who together have 5 children and 12 grandchildren, have been together for more than a decade.

Counter Protest NOM in New York City Sunday

Friday, July 22nd, 2011

The National Organization for Marriage, an anti-LGBT hate group, is organising a rally outside Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s Manhattan office on Sunday, to protest the first day that same-sex couples can legally marry each other in New York state.

NOM is using this historic day as a platform to get their hate message into the media, to raise money to fund their hate group, including going so far as to announce their support for Sen. Ruben Diaz, Sr., a bigot.

We need to present our side of marriage equality to the public and press, who will be there to witness NOM’s hate rally. Join us in denouncing NOM.

NOM is listed among 18 anti-Gay Groups by the Southern Poverty Law Center : http://www.splcenter.org/g et-informed/intelligence-r eport/browse-all-issues/20 10/winter/the-hard-liners

New York City Clerk Offices to Open Sunday, 7/24, for Gay Weddings

Thursday, July 7th, 2011

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg on Wednesday announced his city’s clerk’s offices will open on Sunday, July 24, to accommodate the first day a gay marriage law takes effect in New York.

“This is a historic moment for New York, a moment many couples have waited years and even decades to see – and we are not going to make them wait one day longer than they have to,” Bloomberg said in a statement.

Officials in only one other city, Binghamton, which is located near the state’s south-central border, have said their offices would open on Sunday to accommodate the law’s start, The New York Times reported. Most cities plan to begin offering marriage licenses to gay and lesbian couples on Monday, July 25.
