Instead of endorsing incumbent state senator Mark Grisanti, party chairman Ralph C. Lorigo said Grisanti no longer had the trust of the party after initially saying he was against marriage equality before voting for the bill in 2011.

NY: Empire State Building Hosts First Gay Weddings

Wednesday, February 15th, 2012

Empire State BuildingLucky couples have been married each year on Valentine Day’s on the top of the Empire State Building for nearly two decades but this year for the first time two same sex couples said “I do” at the iconic New York landmark.

The sky-high nuptials on Tuesday followed the legalization of gay marriage in June when Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed the law making New York the sixth, and most populous U.S. state, to approve gays and lesbians to wed.

“We just thought it would be a fantastic opportunity to get married on top of the Empire State building, especially since it is the first year that gay marriage is allowed,” said Phil Fung, a 49-year-old product manager at a financial services firm who wed his partner Shawn Klein, 51, a hospital administrator.

NJ: Quinn Tells Governor Christie to Stop Playing Games With Marriage Equality

Sunday, February 5th, 2012

New Jersey Marriage Equality BillNew York City Council speaker Christine Quinn said that Gov. Chris Christie appears to be playing a “political game” rather than showing leadership with his call for a marriage equality referendum in New Jersey.

Quinn spoke with reporters Saturday evening at the annual Human Rights Campaign Gala in New York. Asked about Christie’s suggestion that New Jersey lawmakers put marriage equality to a public vote, she called the proposal an attempt to “govern by polling.” Christie, who wants the state to keep its civil union law, said Thursday that with a recent survey showing a majority of voters support same-sex marriage, his call for a referendum should be perceived as a “magnanimous” gesture.

“I think the legislature should vote and I think Governor Christie should sign the bill, and if he’s not wiling to sign the bill, then he should veto it,” said Quinn. “But he shouldn’t play a political game, which is in essence what he’s trying to do, which I think everybody has seen as too cute by half.”
