Nigeria Set to Outlaw Marriage Equality

Wednesday, September 28th, 2011

The overriding determination of most Nigerian senators to ensure that the malaise of same-sex marriage otherwise called gay marriage does not take any root in the Nigerian society, propelled the overwhelming support which the bill proposed to prohibit the practice, scaled through the second reading yesterday at the Senate. From indications, the days of the practice appear numbered, given the massive support it received.

The bill, sponsored by Senator Domingo Obende (PDP, Edo) and 13 others would have been shot down by Senator Ita Enang (PDP, Akwa Ibom) who argued that the criminal code had already criminalised gay marriage but for the intervention of Senate President David Mark who allowed the bill to proceed.

Mark’s position was that the bill should be allowed to go through the second reading and people who have objections against it could table it at that stage.

Nigeria: Anglican Primate Calls Gays, Marriage Equality “Great Evils”

Monday, September 19th, 2011

Peeved by the growing malaise of sexual immorality in the country, Primate, Church of Nigeria, the Anglican Communion, Most Rev. Nicholas D. Okoh, has described the practice of homosexuality, lesbianism and gay marriage as great evils that must neither be condoned nor allowed to further exist in our society.

Primate Okoh, who spoke Sunday in Owa, the headquarters of Ika North-east Local Government Area of Delta State during the marriage ceremony between Princess Ewere Efeizomor and Dr. Jimoh Onaivi, stated that homosexuality, lesbianism and same-sex marriage was not the original plan of God.

The war against “improper marriage” had been strongly waged by Rt Rev Peter Akinola who led other Anglican Bishops in East and West Africa to oppose the practice which had taken root in parts of Britain and the United States of America, so much that even the church was ordaining gay priests.

ILGA, Amnesty International Release International Reports on GLBTI Rights

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010

Two reports released by international human rights defenders have put the spotlight on global GLBTI rights. The Amnesty International Report 2010 and the ILGA 2010 State-Sponsored Homophobia report paint a worsening situation in Africa, and improvements in parts of Asia and the Americas.

Both reports singled out Uganda for its notorious Anti-Homosexuality Bill which aims to criminalise the so-called “promotion” of homosexuality and impose the death penalty in some cases.

Nigeria, which has a similar law before Parliament, was criticised, as was Burundi for criminalising same-sex relations. In Senegal and Cameroon, men faced arbitrary arrest, detention, torture and unfair trials when suspected of being gay. In Malawi, two men were sentenced to 14 years in prison for “indecent practices between males”.

Nigeria: New Anglican Primate: Gays Not Welcome in Transformation Effort

Friday, March 26th, 2010

New Primate of the Anglican Church, Archbishop Nicholas Okoh, has restated the position of the Anglican Communion in Nigeria against the practice of gay marriage in the church. This followed a call by Acting President Goodluck Jonathan on religious leaders in the country to collaborate with the Federal Government in transforming the country.

Jonathan was the special guest at the formal handing over of the reign of office to Archbishop Okoh by outgoing Archbishop Peter Akinola, on Thursday at the Cathedral of the Advent Church in Abuja. In his short speech, the Acting President called on the church to shun corruption and discourage social vices. According Jonathan, “As a nation, we are challenged. Over the periods, we have failed to do what we should have done and we have done those things we should not have done. We know our problems. We want religious leaders to join us in solving the problems. We promise to do our best and we are totally committed to transforming this country.”

Okoh, who is also the chairman of the Nigerian Christian Pilgrims Commission, while delivering the sermon of the day, said, “We do not approve of a homosexual lifestyle and same-sex marriages. Some want us to see it as a normal alternative lifestyle to marriage between male and female. We are saying we are sorry, we cannot accept this in the church.”
