NJ: GOP Lawmaker Reduces Gay Relationships to “Friendships”

Monday, April 5th, 2010

In his first comments on why he’s intervened to defend against a lawsuit to win gay marriage in New Jersey, Assemblyman Michael Patrick Carroll says gay relationships are of no “societal consequence.” Carroll, along with Republican Senators Gerald Cardinale and Anthony R. Bucco, are being represented by the Christian-based group Alliance Defense Fund (ADF).

The three men have united against a legal challenge by Lambda Legal filed earlier in the month.
The gay rights group pledged to return to court the day after New Jersey senators killed a gay marriage bill in January. The defeat means that the Legislature isn’t likely to revisit the issue over the next four years as Governor Chris Christie, a Republican who took the helm in January, does not support giving gay couples the right to marry.

“I see no purpose in extending a societal imprimatur – and not insubstantial benefits – to folks whose relationships are of essentially no societal consequence,” Carroll said, then added, “Taxpayers should not be in the business of subsidizing friendships, however close.”

NJ: Alliance Defense Fund & 3 GOP Lawmakers Want in on Gay Marriage Lawsuit Defense

Friday, April 2nd, 2010

Three Republican lawmakers filed a motion to intervene Monday to defend against a New Jersey lawsuit to win gay marriage. Senators Gerald Cardinale and Anthony R. Bucco, along with Assemblyman Michael Patrick Carroll, are being represented by the Christian-based group Alliance Defense Fund (ADF).

Gay rights group Lambda Legal filed the suit earlier in the month after New Jersey senators killed a gay marriage bill in January. The defeat means that the Legislature isn’t likely to revisit the issue over the next four years as Governor Chris Christie, a Republican who took the helm in January, does not support giving gay couples the right to marry.

In Lewis v. Harris, the New Jersey Supreme Court unanimously agreed that it is unconstitutional to deny gay and lesbian couples the rights granted to married heterosexual couples and ordered the Legislature to remedy the situation. Lawmakers responded with a civil unions law.

NJ: Six Couples Ask Supreme Court to Allow Marriage Equality

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

Six same-sex couples today will ask the New Jersey Supreme Court to allow gays to marry, their attorney said. “Second-class status isn’t marriage. That’s why we’re returning to court,” said Hayley Gorenberg, deputy legal director for Lambda Legal, which is filing the motion asking the state’s highest court to revisit the matter of gay marriage.

The Supreme Court ruled in 2006 in Lewis vs. Harris that committed same-sex couples deserve the same rights and obligations as married people. Later that year, state lawmakers legalized civil unions, which were to confer all the benefits of marriage on same-sex couples without using the term “marriage.”

But gay and lesbian couples and advocacy group Garden State Equality have said the civil union law has not worked and they continued to seek a law giving them the right to marry.
