Anti-Equality Group, Minnesota for Marriage, Continues NOM-Like Campaign

Sunday, April 29th, 2012

Watch Misleading NOM- Like Video

“Actually, very few same-sex couples are raising children and many if not most of those couples involve children from a prior heterosexual relationship.” So says the anti- gay group, “Minnesota for Marriage” in its subversive attempt to sway Minnesotans to vote for an amendment to the State constitution that seeks to ban same-sex marriage.

They try to suggest that because not so many gays are raising children there should not be marriage equality. Is this a good reason to amend Minnesota’s constitution?

In a relentless campaign against marriage equality, the group launches weekly TV internet advertisements with questions such as this one which it posed this week:- “Shouldn’t marriage be redefined to accommodate the growing number of children of gay and lesbian couples?” According to my understanding of the English language, this makes absolutely no sense at all. Mission accomplished; confusion!

This insidious campaign smells like dirty rotten National Organization for Marriage (NOM) tactic; its a direct play from the recently exposed and discredited NOM handbook for opposing marriage equality.

The National Organization for Marriage, NOM received widespread exposure as their shocking tactics were made public through the release of previously sealed documents in an investigation by the Maine Ethics Commission.

It seems as if Minnesota for Marriage studied the blue print and decided to use the NOM strategy in their campaign to change the Minnesota Constitution to support defining marriage as between a man and a woman only.

ME: Anti Gay Groups Join Forces to Fight Marriage Equality Referendum

Monday, April 23rd, 2012

NOM LogoThe Christian Civic League of Maine and the National Organization for Marriage say they’ve combined forces to defeat the same-sex marriage referendum proposal on next November’s ballot.

The chairman of Protect Marriage Maine, Rev. Bob Emrich, says it will organize groups of different faiths as well as people with no faith traditions at all in opposition to the ballot initiative. Maine voters defeated a gay marriage proposal that was on the 2009 ballot.

Christian Civic League Executive Director Carroll Conley says his group was not a major player in the 2009 campaign, but he believes it can play a major role in the campaign this year.

USA: NOM’s Starbucks Boycott Flops

Tuesday, April 17th, 2012

Starbucks BoycottNational Organization for Marriage’s DumpStarbucks campaign, which is NOM’s attempt to punish Starbucks for supporting marriage equality, went international on April 10, running online ads in Egypt, Beijing, Hong Kong, the Yunnan region of China, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Oman and Kuwait in the languages Mandarin, Arabic, Turkish, Spanish and Bahala.

By April 10th, before their international campaign kick-off, NOM had garnered about 30,400 domestic signatures on their boycott petition.
April 10.

One week later, after running online ads in some of the most anti-gay countries on Earth, NOM has netted all of 1,500 additional signatures.

CA, USA: Fred Karger Lodges Ethics Complaint Against NOM Over Romney Contribution

Monday, April 16th, 2012

NOM LogoLast week, Fred Karger, a Republican Party Presidential candidate, filed a formal complaint with the California’s Fair Political Practices Commission (FPPC) against the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) for failing to report a $10,000 contribution which was made to it on October 14, 2008 by then Governor Mitt Romney.

Fred Karger issued the following statement:-

“NOM has once again conspired to hide its contributions, and this time it was Mitt Romney’s,” stated Karger. “The recently unsealed documents (coincidentally from my last campaign ethics violation complaint against NOM in Maine) revealed that NOM received the $10,000 on October 14, 2008 from Romney’s Alabama PAC “Free and Strong America.”

That was only 3 weeks before the Prop 8 election in which NOM was heavily involved. Funny that NOM appears to have reported all the contributions that it received before and after Romney’s, but failed to report Governor Romney’s $10,000 to ban gay marriage in California.

USA: NOM Gets Hacked Again

Saturday, April 14th, 2012

NOM LogoBoy, if Anonymous is now taking on NOM… well, let me just say, wow (and yippee!).

It’s not clear that Anonymous is behind the hack, it’s just some conjecture by some who see clues in the latest hacked NOM tweets.

Remember, NOM was hacked the other day as well, and that time it was their Twitter account, Facebook page, and Web site – a pretty impressive triumvirate of hacker (which is why, likely, some suspect expert hackers (or whatever the correct term is) like Anonymous).

USA: NOM’s Gallagher Says Whether She Is Married or Not is Irrelevant

Friday, April 13th, 2012

Maggie GallagherYesterday Republican presidential candidate and NOM investigator Fred Karger sent out an email speculating that ‘marriage defender’ Maggie Gallagher may not actually be married because she never wears a wedding ring in public or appears with her husband Roman Srivastav.

Gallagher spoke to Buzzfeed about Karger’s accusations:

Gallagher laughed when asked about Karger’s speculation, and said “I think I would know better than Fred.”

Gallagher, who was a single mother for years after college, says she married her husband Raman Srivastav in Arizona in 1993: “We are still married and living together. He’s a very private person.”

USA: NOM’s Twitter Feed, Facebook Page Also Hacked, With Hilarious Results

Thursday, April 12th, 2012

NOM LogoAbsolutely hilarious. At first blush it was thought that the National Organization for Marriage was apologizing for its race-baiting tactics. Jeremy Hooper of GoodAsYou reported that both the anti-LGBT org’s Facebook page and Twitter account also seemed to reflect a change in attitude.

The web site is now “down for maintenance.” We’ll see if Brian Brown can get his hate machine’s act together before we can enjoy much more of this. The Washington Blade:

Though this could be the result of an industrious hacker, if the posts are not actually the words of NOM, they could be the result of another staff defector. In April 2011, Louis Marinelli, who guided NOM’s social media presence to that point.

NOM Will Endorse Romney

Wednesday, April 11th, 2012

NOM LogoThe National Organization for Marriage will endorse Mitt Romney today, Politico reports:

In a statement, NOM president Brian Brown will urge conservatives to get behind Romney: “Now is the time for all people who recognize the importance of marriage to come together to support a true champion, Mitt Romney, against an incumbent who has done virtually everything in his power to undermine the institution of marriage.”

“Governor Romney was an early signer of NOM’s presidential pledge which represents his commitment to the nation to take specific actions as president to preserve and protect marriage as the union of one man and one woman,” Brown’s message says.

USA: NOM Site Hacked?

Wednesday, April 11th, 2012

Early this morning, prominent National Organization for Marriage watchdog Jeremy Hooper of the GoodAsYou.org blog reported that both the NOM Facebook page and Twitter account posted strange tweets that seem to indicate a change of heart.

UPDATE: NOM’S blog site seems to be “down for maintenance” after the uncharacteristic post was discovered. This could more clearly indicate the post is the result of a hacker or rogue employee, rather than a change is course.

UPDATE 2: After posting another tweet that confirmed the errant messages did not originate from the organization’s leadership, the Twitter account seems to have been disabled.

The Many Lies of NOM’s Maggie Gallagher

Tuesday, April 10th, 2012

NOM LogoIn April, 2011, when GetEqual’s Michael Dixon presented NOM’s Maggie Gallagher with her “Anita Bryant Unparalleled Bigotry” Award, Gallagher said “There’s no point in conversing with someone who calls you a liar,” as though no anti-gay lie had ever passed her lips.

Back in her syndicated column dated October 25, 1996, though, Gallagher conveys her unshakable conviction that her theocratic contempt for gay human beings should be enshrined in civil law. She wrote that she is not willing to live in a society that gives anti-discrimination protections to gay people. Gallagher’s article is jam-packed with anti-gay lies.

She says, for example, that she opposes anti-discrimination protections for gay people out of “a sense of injustice that a small affluent group should be pressing for more economic protections.” Gallagher’s statement that all gay people are affluent is a shameless, propagandistic lie. So is her asinine claim that money is the only rationale — and/or motive — for anti-discrimination laws.
