NOM to Maryland Senate: Reject Marriage Equality Bill

Sunday, February 19th, 2012

NOM LogoThe National Organization for Marriage (NOM) is calling on the Maryland Senate to reject a gay marriage bill approved Friday by the House of Delegates.

After nearly 3 hours of debate, House members approved Governor Martin O’Malley’s plan to make Maryland the eighth state to legalize gay marriage with a narrow 72 to 67 vote.

Supporters faced their greatest obstacle in the House, where Democratic leaders last year shelved a vote due to lack of support.

NJ: NOM Fundraising to “Sustain the Veto”

Sunday, February 19th, 2012

NOM LogoWe’ve got almost two full years to override the veto of NJ Gov. Chris Christie. And you can bet that NOM will be raising money on that fear the entire fucking time.

“Yesterday afternoon, just hours after the same-sex marriage bill reached his desk, Governor Christie made good on his promise to return the bill to the legislature “with a big red veto.”

“Democratic leaders in the Senate and Assembly–who made same-sex marriage their #1 priority this year–are now scrambling to come up with the 2/3 majority needed to override Governor Christie’s veto. And it’s up to us to make sure that they don’t succeed in pressuring, cajoling or arm-twisting enough politicians to override Governor Christie’s veto.”

Thom Hartman Interviews NOM’s Maggie Gallagher

Sunday, February 12th, 2012

Marriage Equality foe Maggie Gallagher was interviewed by The Big Picture’s Thom Hartmann, who challenged the activist on several key points.

When asked if she felt her efforts represented the mainstream or a fringe group, Gallagher said, “Thirty-one out of thirty-one times the American people have had a chance to vote in the last decade, including as recently as 2009 in May, they voted to say ‘no, we don’t believe that gay marriage is a right.

We think marriage is the union between a husband and wife for a reason. These are the only unions that make new life and connect children and love to their mother and father.’”

Freedom to Marry’s Wolfson Cleans NOM’s Clock

Monday, February 6th, 2012

Freedom to Marry’s Evan Wolfson and Brian Brown of the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) faced off yesterday in a WABC debate over putting same-sex marriage to a voter referendum in New Jersey.

The more Brown repeats his idiotic talking points, the more their lack of substance becomes apparent, particularly when there’s an expert like Wolfson on hand to tear them to shreds.

NOM: Ron Paul Losing Because He Doesn’t Support Marriage Equality Ban

Sunday, February 5th, 2012

Ron Paul is losing the GOP presidential nominating contest because he does not support a federal constitutional amendment that would ban gay marriage, Brian Brown, president of the National Organization for Marriage (NOM), has suggested.

In congratulating Mitt Romney for winning the Nevada caucuses on Saturday, Brown noted that the former Massachusetts governor has signed the group’s anti-gay marriage pledge and Paul has not.

“NOM congratulates Mitt Romney on another impressive victory in the Nevada caucuses, just days after his big win in Florida,” Brown said in a statement. “Governor Romney, who has signed NOM’s Marriage Pledge, has now won contests in three different regions of the country and has clearly established himself as the leading candidate.”

MN: HRC Asks Minnesota to Investigate NOM Financial Activity in State

Thursday, February 2nd, 2012

Minnesota Marriage Equality and NOMThe Human Rights Campaign (HRC) today released an analysis of campaign disclosure reports – made public today in Minnesota – that reveal the National Organization for Marriage has launched an unprecedented effort to avoid disclosing individual donors as required by law.

Such secrecy once again reveals NOM is not a grassroots organization but serves the interest of a handful of wealthy anti-gay donors. HRC urges the Minnesota Campaign Finance and Disclosure Board to investigate NOM’s financial activity around the Minnesota ballot measure.

Reports filed with the Minnesota Campaign Finance and Disclosure Board reveal that marriage equality opponents received only seven individual donations and one donation from a family estate. However, they have raised more than $1.2 million from just three entities: $750,000 contributed by the Minnesota Catholic Conference, $250,000 by the National Organization for Marriage and $226,000 by the Minnesota Family Council.

NH: GOP Lacks Votes to Repeal Marriage Equality

Sunday, January 29th, 2012

New Hampshire Marriage Equality RepealNew Hampshire State Rep. Seth Cohn has said he does not believe gay marriage foes have sufficient support to repeal the state’s law.

Democrats legalized gay marriage in 2009. But the law has been under constant threat of repeal since Republicans regained control of the House and Senate.

Rep. David Bates last year introduced a bill that would make New Hampshire the first state to legislatively overturn a gay marriage law.

NOM Running Anti Marriage Equality Robocalls in New Jersey

Thursday, January 26th, 2012

NOM LogoOpponents of a gay marriage in New Jersey are mobilizing their supporters with a round of “robo-calls” against legislation that is set to get its first vetting Tuesday before a state senate committee.

“There’s an attempt by wealthy activists to force same sex marriage on New Jersey without a public vote. It’s urgent that you call your state senator and urge him to vote no on same sex legislation,” the call states.

Recipients are then directed to call their specific representatives in Trenton. The calls started going out about two weeks ago to about half a million people who have expressed opposition to same sex marriage in the past, according to Brian Brown, president of the National Organization for Marriage, a group lobbying against the bill.

NOM Promises to Throw $250K Into Marriage Equality Repeal

Sunday, January 22nd, 2012

NOM and New Hampshire Marriage Equality RepealThe National Organization for Marriage (NOM) has pledged $250,000 to support New Hampshire lawmakers who vote for a bill that would repeal the state’s 2-year-old gay marriage law.

Republican Representative David Bates last year introduced a bill that would replace the law with civil unions for any unmarried adults, including relatives, and would allow anyone to refuse to recognize such unions.

If approved, New Hampshire would become the first state to legislative overturn a gay marriage law.

WA: NOM Promises $250K to Defeat Republicans Who Vote for Marriage Equality

Thursday, January 19th, 2012

NOM LogoEarlier today, it looked like Republicans Fain (R-47) and Hill (R-45) were potential winners because they stood to benefit with a spike in contributions if they broke party ranks–as both are considering doing–and voted for the gay marriage bill. (The bill needs 25 votes and it’s currently shy by about one or two, with some conservative Democrats thinking of voting no and only two of the 22 Republicans (so far) supporting it.

Four Republican state senators in New York who pushed the state’s gay marriage bill over the top got a windfall in political contributions, according to the New York Times.

But no sooner than that news hit, this press release came across our desk from the National Organization for Marriage, a national anti-gay marriage lobbying group, pledging to spend $250,000 to beat any Republican who supports the bill in Washington State.
