NY: Lawsuit-Happy NOM in Court Again Thursday

Wednesday, October 20th, 2010

New York Gay MarriageA national group that opposes gay marriage wants to sponsor advertisements supporting Carl P. Paladino for governor and bashing his opponent, Andrew M. Cuomo. But the National Organization for Marriage doesn’t want to conform to state election laws requiring it to register as a political committee and reveal the names of its contributors.

The group calls that requirement a violation of free speech rights and has asked a federal judge in Buffalo to declare a section of state Election Law unconstitutional. The state Board of Elections says the law is constitutional, and U.S. District Judge Richard J. Arcara will hear legal arguments on the dispute Thursday afternoon.

Based in Washington, D.C., the group — which refers to itself as NOM in court papers — says it wants to run radio and television ads as well as a direct-mail marketing campaign that would support some candidates and criticize others.

NY: Alec Baldwin Does Ad for Gay Marriage for Fight Back NY

Wednesday, October 20th, 2010

Actor Alec Baldwin may not be gay, but he wants to at least have the option to marry Jesse Tyler Ferguson, who stars on the ABC sitcom “Modern Family.”

Baldwin cut an ad for Fight Back NY, an advocacy group and political action committee that campaigns for Senate candidates who approve of same-sex marriage. Baldwin, who has lent his voice to a variety of liberal causes over the years, jokes in the video that his only hindrance to getting married to Ferguson are a group of state lawmakers opposed to same-sex marriage.

In this case, the group is targeting Sen. Frank Padavan, R-Queens.

NY: Paladino Furious Over Gay Marriage Debate Question

Tuesday, October 19th, 2010

New York Gay MarriageAs last night’s gubernatorial debate was concluding one of the moderators decided to throw in one last question for the seven candidates — a controversial one that drew outrage from Republican gubernatorial candidate Carl Paladino’s campaign.

The question, “Do you support gay marriage?” was asked at 8:18 p.m. and due to time constraints the moderator stated that they wanted merely a “yes” or “no”"answer, imposing a five second limit on answers from the candidates, as opposed to the 60 – 90 seconds they each got on every other question.

Paladino, who was up first on that question began to explain his views on the issue, only to be interrupted and have a one word answer demanded of him. The flustered candidate, who has been under fire from gay rights activists over remarks made last weekend, responded that he opposed same sex marriages. Five of the other candidates, including Democratic Attorney General Andrew M. Cuomo answered yes; Freedom Party candidate Charles Barron said that his Party was yet to take a position on the issue.

NY: Paladino Questions Cuomo’s Gay Rights Support???

Sunday, October 17th, 2010

Cuomo LandNew York’s Tea Party-Republican candidate for governor, Carl Paladino is now trying to use gay rights against Andrew Cuomo, claiming his Democrat opponent was “all but invisible” when same-sex marriage was being discussed in the state legislature last year.

Paladino has launched new “Cuomo Land” attack ads against the New York Attorney General, using the popular kids’ game Candyland as a model, and promises to release a daily “Cuomo Land” attack, to “assure the facts are straight on what he says and what he does,” according to campaign manager Michael Caputo.

Last week, Paldino came under fire when he said he did not want his children “brainwashed into thinking that homosexuality” was an acceptable option, that homosexuality is “not the way God created us.”

NY: Cuomo Promises to Sign Gay Marriage into Law

Thursday, October 14th, 2010

Sarah Jessica Parker brought star-power to Empire State Pride Agenda’s Fall Dinner and Andrew Cuomo promised political power.

“I don’t want to be the governor who just proposes marriage equality. I don’t want to be the governor who lobbies for marriage equality. I don’t want to be the governor who fights for marriage equality. I want to be the governor who signs the law that makes equality a reality in the state of New York,” Cuomo said.

Cuomo’s promise to legalize gay marriage is not new, but it had renewed resonance for New York’s gay and lesbian community and their supporters.

NY: Teabagger Candidate for Governor: “I Oppose the Homosexual Agenda”

Monday, October 11th, 2010

On Sunday, Republican candidate for governor Carl Paladino met with orthodox Jewish leaders in Williamsburg, Brooklyn and made it clear he has serious issues when it comes to the gay community. “I just think my children and your children would be much better off and much more successful getting married and raising a family, and I don’t want them to be brainwashed into thinking that homosexuality is an equally valid and successful option. It isn’t,” said Paladino.

The remarks came right after Paladino said it was time to stop pandering to “pornographers and perverts.”

Paladino, whose nephew is gay, outlined his views on gay issues at two separate events with religious leaders, saying he would veto any legislation that granted gays the right to marry. “I oppose the homosexual agenda, whether they call it marriage, civil union or domestic partnership,” said the Republican candidate.

Want to Get Married in New York? Have a $10 Mug Instead

Thursday, September 16th, 2010

New York Gay Marriage MugSame-sex couples may not be able to wed in this state, but New York City is offering a consolation prize to commemorate their unions – mugs. The official CityStore at the City Clerk’s Manhattan Marriage Bureau sells three versions of its “We Do” mugs, along with other merchandise that celebrate nuptials.

The first blue-and-white mug features a traditional groom standing in a tux with the bride, in a flowing white grown, in his arms. The second, however, features two grooms dressed in bow ties, while a third shows two women, both dressed casually in plaid, standing side-by-side.

All three feature the words, “We do” and are available for $10, despite many unsuccessful attempts by several New York City officials to pass a bill allowing gay marriage. Ron Zacchi, Executive Director of Marriage Equality New York, said he thinks the mugs are a “slap in the face” to gay couples.

NY: HRC Sponsors New Marriage Equality Ads in State

Monday, September 13th, 2010

Advocates for same-sex marriage in New York, in a major departure from their strategy of lobbying political insiders, will begin making a direct appeal to ordinary voters in a series of commercials featuring Hollywood actors, fashion designers and civic leaders.

The videos, to be released starting this week, are the most vivid attempt yet to persuade the state’s lawmakers to legalize gay marriage, which the Legislature voted down last year, despite polling that showed a slight majority of New York voters supported it.

In the aftermath of that defeat, many grumbled that the backers of same-sex marriage had failed to rally ordinary residents behind the bill or to humanize the issue outside of Albany – the explicit aim of the new ads.
